Abstract

Politeness strategies are techniques for managing social interactions. They are often used to avoid conflict, maintain good relationships, and ensure effective communication. This research aims to identify and analyze politeness strategies in Buginese conversations among family members in Pangkep Regency. The sociolinguistics approach is used as the main theoretical framework, emphasizing Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory (1987), which consists of bald-on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and offrecord. The method used is descriptive qualitative with an ethnographic case study approach, centered on observing a group of people within their natural environment rather than focusing on formal settings. Data were collected through participant observational checklist, conversational record, and in-depth interviews with family members of various ages and social statuses. The research results show that the Buginese family members in Pangkep Regency used various politeness strategies to maintain social harmony and respect the family hierarchy. This strategy includes using polite and respectful language when talking to older people with a higher social status. The research results show that the Buginese family members in Pangkep Regency used positive politeness strategies more dominantly than other categories of Politeness strategies include social obligations, interactional cooperation, power, age, distance relationships, perceptions of facethreatening acts (FTAs), and imposition and asymmetry of dependency. These findings highlight the importance of understanding and appreciating politeness strategies in interactions between family members, which can positively impact social relations in Buginese society.

Abstract

Instagram was a very popular social media today in Indonesia, especially for millennials. The popularity of Instagram media has been used as a means of promoting food products by culinary traders in the city of Makassar. With the promotion of food products through Instagram, netizens' speech interactions in the comments column started from asking for prices, menus, ordering or reservation systems, to marking each other and inviting their friends to eat together. This study aimed to describe the language variations on Instagram carried out by netizens in Makassar City. This research was a qualitative descriptive study and the research data is in the form of text, namely the speech of buying and selling food in the comments column for uploading advertisements for culinary account users on Instagram. Data collection was carried out from April 2020 to April 2021, during which this period was also marked by the implementation of large-scale social restrictions to minimize the spread of COVID-19. In netizen communication through Instagram, there was code-mixing of Indonesian language codes with foreign languages, regional languages and the mixing of Makassar Malay speech codes. This study found several uses of language variations in the form of words, phrases and sentences. There were various variations of non-standard language in the form of word approaches, abbreviations, and the use of foreign term insertions adopted by speakers. The use of code-mixing and informal language can be interpreted as a form of tertiary oral as well as everyday forms of communication but was carried out in written form through communication media. Communication through social media Instagram has changed the way individuals communicate and has also changed the use of people's language.

Abstract

Translation plays a crucial role in many aspects, including film subtitles. This research aimed toidentify the types of translation strategies and the quality of the translations used in the Indonesian subtitle ofthe film Frozen II. Using a descriptive qualitative method, the analysis was based on Suryawinata and Hariyanto'stranslation strategies classification, which includes structural and semantic strategies. Nine strategies wereidentified: addition, transposition, borrowing, cultural equivalent, descriptive equivalent, synonym, reduction, expansion, and modulation. The translation's quality was evaluated using Nababan et al.'s criteria of accuracy, acceptability, and readability. The results showed that the translation was highly accurate, with an accuracypercentage of 85.9%. However, the 14.1% of translations classified as less accurate (12.7%) or inaccurate(1.4%) highlight challenges in capturing nuance, tone, and context, often due to constraints like limited spaceand timing in subtitles. While most translations were accurate, these cases emphasize the need for carefulattention to detail to maintain the original meaning. Furthermore, this study concludes that the translatoreffectively applied multiple strategies, resulting in a high-quality translation that captures the intended meaningand cultural nuances of Frozen II. Additionally, the distinct contribution of this study lies in its thoroughintegration of both structural and semantic translation strategies, providing a more comprehensive analysisthan previous research. It emphasizes the critical importance of not only translating language accurately butalso conveying meaning and cultural nuances, particularly in the subtitles of animated films, to preserve theoriginal essence and emotional impact for Indonesian audiences.

Abstract

Poetry as a literary work represents the social phenomena of society written by the author. This research aimed to analyze the elements that build erotic discourse in the poetry collection Orkestra Pemakaman (2018) by Aslan Abidin. This research used a qualitative descriptive research method with purposive sampling techniques and flow models. Through Paul Ricouer's hermeneutical approach, this research revealed that the elements of poetry that build erotic discourse include the use of rich diction, strong imagery, diverse figurative language, and deep rhetorical means. Apart from that, the erotic discourse in this anthology also included aspects such as sexuality discourse, power discourse, historical discourse, religious discourse, death euphoria discourse and cultural identity discourse. Erotic discourse was depicted through the meaning of women as objects, the depiction of women's bodies in erotic language, and the reflection of society's views on sexual education. The findings provided an understanding of the relationship between eroticism, religion and cultural identity in the context of South Sulawesi.

Abstract

The Bawakaraeng Hajj ritual in South Sulawesi is an important tradition practiced by indigenous communities at the peak of Mount Bawakaraeng. This study explored issues related to the reporting of the Bawakaraeng Hajj ritual on social media. Using critical discourse analysis (CDA) as outlined by Teun A. van Dijk (1993), the research took a qualitative approach based on Digital Ethnography. Between 2022 and 2025, the study identified fourteen data sets from Instagram and Facebook, featuring images, videos, and narratives. The findings revealed two main discourses: one focused on tradition preservation, emphasizing the ritual as a vital part of cultural heritage, and the other addressing religious deviation, viewing the ritual as potentially misaligned with Islamic teachings. The analysis showed that the social media discourse about the Bawakaraeng Hajj reflects the indigenous practices of the region, contributing to its spiritual heritage and local mythology. It highlighted the importance of cultural sustainability and community identity. From a broader perspective, the discourse presented themes related to visual representation and responses to religious concerns. Different narratives emerged from those who accepted and rejected the ritual, providing insights into the community's dynamics. Additionally, the language used in the posts offered a descriptive account of the Haji Bawakaraeng ritual and critiques of opposing views. This study encourages further discussions about how traditional practices can coexist within modern religious contexts.

Abstract

This research examined the rhetorical structure of the climax plot in the novel Ayat-Ayat Cinta by Habiburrahman El Shirazy (2004). This study employed a qualitative design, utilizing Swales' (1990) move analysis method to identify moves and strategies in the climax chapters, and supported the analysis with narrative plot mapping. The results showed that the climax plot was dominated by rhetorical moves that highlighted narrative shifts through tension, provided character struggles, highlighted character emotions, and built a dramatic atmosphere that served to strengthen the ideological and persuasive dimensions of the narrative. In addition, a length analysis of the climax revealed that measuring it through the number of chapters, pages, paragraphs, and dialogues effectively reflected the dramatic effect and maximized the communicative impact on readers. These findings indicate that rhetorical structure influences the persuasive power of the climax in conveying moral, cultural, and religious values. This study provides insight into how narrative design contributes to the creation of meaning in Indonesian popular literature.

Abstract

This study examined how power is reflected in BTS’s Love Myself campaign, which have had significant emotional and social impact, especially among their fans, ARMY. Using Norman Fairclough’s three-dimensional model of discourse analysis, this study analyzed how RM’s speech at the UN in 2018 constructed power relations. The data set consists of six selected excerpts from the speech, supported by news articles and selected screenshots of fans’ social media posts. Findings showed that the data demonstrated different forms of horizontal power between BTS and audience: one symbolic, one persuasive, two normative, and the other two were a combination of all three. The active participation of ARMY further strengthens the campaign in the digital space. The results also showed that the campaign helped shift shame-oriented cultural norms toward a more open and accepting environment regarding insecurity, self-worth, and mental health.

Abstract

This study examines how English terminology functions within the Mobile Legends: Bang Bang (MLBB) game interface, focusing on its role in player navigation and decision-making. Through qualitative analysis of the game's interface over three weeks, we identified 27 specialized English terms across four key areas: starting menu, hero classifications, positional roles, and battle spell icons. Our findings reveal that these terms form a structured linguistic system rather than random labels, each term serves a specific navigational purpose and helps players make quick strategic decisions during gameplay. The terminology shows interesting linguistic features, including semantic narrowing and the creation of game-specific words, particularly among battle spells. To strengthen our analysis, we gathered feedback from five active MLBB players about their experiences with interface terminology and consulted a linguistics expert to validate our interpretations. The results suggest that MLBB's English terminology operates as a controlled vocabulary that standardizes gameplay communication across different language backgrounds. However, this study primarily analyzed the interface itself rather than extensively exploring how diverse players actually interpret these terms. Future research should include broader player perspectives, especially from users with varying English proficiency levels, to better understand the cognitive processes behind terminology comprehension in multilingual gaming communities.
