Abstract

This research investigates the role of the AI chatbot ChatGPT in grammar assessment and personalized feedback for second-grade students at SMKN 10 Makassar. It aims to evaluate ChatGPT’s accuracy in assessing students’ grammatical competence, the effectiveness of its feedback in enhancing grammar skills, and students’ perceptions of its usefulness as a grammar learning tool. Using a mixed-method explanatory sequential design, quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire involving 46 students, while qualitative insights were gained through interviews with six purposively selected participants. The findings revealed that a majority of students perceived ChatGPT as accurate and consistent in identifying grammatical errors, particularly appreciating the clarity and specificity of its feedback. Furthermore, the data indicated that ChatGPT contributed to improved grammar understanding and motivation, especially through personalized explanations and error correction. Qualitative responses supported these findings, highlighting students’ increased confidence and engagement in grammar learning. While some neutral responses suggested room for refinement in feedback fairness and bias perception, the overall results demonstrate ChatGPT’s potential as an effective supplementary tool in grammar instruction. This research contributes to the growing literature on AI-assisted language learning and offers practical implications for integrating technology into grammar teaching at the junior high school level.

Abstract

AI-driven writing assistants in EFL classrooms have revolutionized academic writing pedagogy, offering students immediate feedback on grammar, coherence, and organization. Although AI tools have demonstrated efficacy in improving linguistic precision, their influence on developing critical thinking remains ambiguous, especially among varying competency levels. Current study predominantly emphasizes AI's impact on grammatical corrections, although there is a paucity of knowledge on its effect on higher-order cognitive involvement, including argumentation and reasoning abilities. This study examines the interaction between EFL students and AI feedback, assessing its impact on promoting or obstructing critical thinking. The study reveals that, through examining pre-test and post-test writing evaluations, student reflections, and AI feedback patterns, lower-proficiency students (B1) predominantly depend on AI for superficial adjustments. In contrast, advanced learners (C1) interact with AI-generated ideas more critically. Nonetheless, AI's constraints in assessing argument strength and logical reasoning demonstrate that it cannot entirely supplant human feedback. These findings indicate that AI should be deliberately integrated with teacher support to optimize its advantages while reducing over-dependence. Future studies should investigate AI-human hybrid feedback models to improve language proficiency and critical thinking skills in academic writing.

Abstract

This study explores the representation of linguistic acculturation between Javanese (Yogyakarta) and Korean cultures in the novel Langit Goryeo by Berliana Kimberly through the framework of John W. Berry’s acculturation theory. The research aims to investigate how characters in the novel adopt, negotiate, and preserve cultural identities in the context of intercultural encounters. Using a qualitative-descriptive approach, the study identifies and categorizes linguistic and cultural interactions based on Berry’s four acculturation strategies: assimilation, integration, separation, and marginalization. The analysis reveals that integration is the dominant acculturation mode depicted in the novel, wherein characters maintain their cultural roots while engaging harmoniously with the host culture. Instances of assimilation and separation are also present, showing the fluid and contextual nature of acculturation. However, no indication of marginalization was found, suggesting an intentional narrative that values collaboration and intercultural dialogue. The findings demonstrate how literary works can function as sociocultural reflections and pedagogical tools in understanding multicultural dynamics. The novel highlights that integrative acculturation fosters inclusive relationships and mutual respect across cultures. This study contributes to the field of literary linguistics and intercultural communication by emphasizing the role of narrative fiction in shaping cross-cultural understanding

Abstract

This study presents a forensic pragmatic analysis of two suicide notes written by a young couple in Makassar, Indonesia, who died by suicide in November 2023. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research applies the theories of implicature (Grice, 1975), presupposition (Levinson, 1983), and speech acts (Searle, 1979) to uncover implicit meanings and communicative intentions embedded within the notes. The data, consisting of handwritten texts publicly verified by authorities, were analyzed thematically to identify expressions of emotional exhaustion, perceived burden, and unresolved relational conflict. The findings reveal that both notes are rich in indirect language, culturally shaped presuppositions, and emotionally charged speech acts that function as both personal expressions and posthumous directives. Moreover, gendered linguistic patterns suggest differing emotional emphases and narrative tones between the two writers. The study highlights the role of language in encoding psychological distress and social obligations, offering new insights into the intersection of linguistics, mental health, and forensic inquiry. By focusing on suicide discourse in a Southeast Asian context, this research contributes to the underrepresented domain of non-Western forensic linguistics and emphasizes the value of pragmatic analysis for suicide prevention and legal interpretation

Abstract

The rapid integration of artificial intelligence into higher education has reshaped how postgraduate students approach academic reading and learning. This study explores postgraduate English Education students’ perceptions of ChatGPT as a substitute for traditional reading, focusing on how the tool influences their cognitive engagement and reading behaviour. Anchored in the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM), Cognitive Offloading Theory, and Reading Literacy Theory, the research employs a quantitative survey design involving 108 master’s students from the Graduate Program of Universitas Negeri Makassar. A structured questionnaire measured four constructs: Perceived Usefulness (PU), Perceived Ease of Use (PEOU), Cognitive Offloading (COG), and Reading Habits Impact (RHI). Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, correlation, and reliability testing. The findings reveal that students perceive ChatGPT as highly useful (M = 4.23) and easy to use (M = 4.35). These positive perceptions correlate strongly with cognitive offloading (r = 0.61), indicating frequent reliance on ChatGPT to simplify learning tasks. However, a significant negative correlation between cognitive offloading and reading habits (r = –0.54) suggests that increased dependence on ChatGPT reduces students’ motivation for traditional reading. Overall, the study highlights a dual outcome, while ChatGPT enhances learning efficiency and accessibility, it simultaneously contributes to the decline of deep reading practices. The results underscore the need for balanced AI integration that promotes critical reading, reflective thinking, and responsible technology use in postgraduate education.

Abstract

This study investigates the Lontaraq writing competence of pre-service Bugis language teachers by applying a Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) framework to evaluate their narrative development and textual organization. Thirteen handwritten Lontaraq narrative texts produced in the Marukiq course served as the primary data. Using a qualitative descriptive design, the analysis examined genre structure, ideational choices, theme–rheme patterns, and cohesive devices. The findings reveal strong and consistent control of Orientation and Sequence of Events, driven by action-based clauses dominated by material processes (63–74%), reflecting the influence of oral storytelling traditions. However, Complication and Coda were infrequently realized, showing limited ability to construct tension, evaluation, and reflective closure. Textual organization was characterized by locative topical themes, constant thematic progression, and simple additive cohesion, with minimal reference chains or complex logical connectors. These patterns indicate that students are transitioning from oral to written narrative conventions but have not yet developed advanced textual management. The study highlights a need for explicit SFL-based instruction in narrative staging, ideational diversification, and theme–rheme structuring to strengthen Lontaraq literacy. The findings contribute to the emerging scholarship on indigenous script revitalization by demonstrating how SFL can be applied to assess and enhance writing competence in non-Latin, heritage-script contexts.
