Abstract

This research aims to analyze the construction of power and knowledge within the polemics that occurred at Al-Zaytun Islamic Boarding Schools. The study adopts a critical discourse analysis (CDA) approach, utilizing the framework of Michel Foucault's thinking. The primary data source for this research consists of news coverage published by Kompas.com, a leading news website in Indonesia. The collected news articles underwent a rigorous qualitative analysis process guided by the principles of critical discourse analysis and Michel Foucault's framework. Research shows that differences in interpretation and understanding of religious teachings cause controversies in Islamic boarding schools. The construction of power and knowledge in Islamic boarding schools plays a vital role in shaping the views and actions of individuals and the wider community. Islamic boarding schools have authority in interpreting and teaching religious teachings to students, and this includes a hierarchical structure in leadership, decisions taken by kyai or caregivers, and control over the religious knowledge conveyed to students. This research provides a deeper understanding of power, knowledge, and resistance dynamics within the context of polemics. From Michel Foucault's perspective, critical discourse analysis offers a critical view of the relationship between power, knowledge, and discourse in society.

Abstract

Covid-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on various aspects of life in Jember Regency. Economic growth contracted deeply, with a recorded decrease of -2.98 percent in 2020. The effects of this economic contraction also influenced the unemployment rate, which increased by 19 thousand people according to data from the Central Statistics Agency (BPS). Additionally, the number of people living in poverty also increased, adding up to 21 thousand individuals. Income inequality between the rich and poor, measured by the Gini Index, indicates a moderate level of inequality, suggesting significant disparities. Furthermore, the Human Development Index (HDI) in Jember Regency is still lower than the average in East Java, indicating an urgent need for improving the quality of life for residents. The objective of this research is to analyze the changes and progress in the MSME sector. The research was conducted through library research. The results of this study indicate: 1) healthy competition through the organization of the Excellent Expo MSME 2021 and Geber MSME Jember Expo 2021, 2) investment by the government through collaboration with OK OCE, 3) education and training conducted by the regency government through the Cooperative and Microenterprise Agency (Diskopum), 4) innovation, the regency government innovates by providing facilities for managing NIB, PIRT, Halal, HAKI, and digital-based payments, 5) industrial dynamics, the number of active MSMEs in Jember has significantly increased from before, reaching more than 25,000 business units in 2024, an increase from the previous year.

Abstract

IntroductionIn Indonesia, poverty is influenced by a complex set of economic, social, and structural factors. Issues such as economic crises, increasing populations, income levels, long-term unemployment, health problems, low educational background, limited access to goods and services, geographical location, and gender contribute to poverty.ObjectivesThis study aims to analyze the impact of zakat, the Human Development Index (HDI), the open unemployment rate, and income on poverty in Indonesia from 2013 to 2022.MethodThis study used quantitative methods with multiple linear regression analysis using Eviews. Time-series data were sourced from Statistics Indonesia (Badan Pusat Statistik) and the National Amil Zakat Agency (Badan Amil Zakat Nasional). The analysis includes classical assumption tests such as normality, multicollinearity, heteroscedasticity, and autocorrelation tests.ResultsThe findings reveal that zakat, HDI, and income have negative and significant impacts on poverty in Indonesia. This indicates that increases in zakat, HDI, and income lead to reductions in poverty levels. However, the open unemployment rate did not have a significant effect on poverty.ImplicationsThe results highlight the importance of zakat as a socioeconomic tool to reduce poverty by redistributing wealth. Improving human development through better education, healthcare, and economic opportunities is crucial for alleviating poverty. Policies aimed at increasing income levels can significantly reduce poverty rates.Originality/NoveltyThis study contributes to the literature by examining the simultaneous effects of zakat, HDI, the open unemployment rate, and income on poverty across Indonesia, offering insights into effective poverty reduction strategies.

Abstract

Abstract

Poverty remains a significant challenge to civilization, particularly within Muslim communities. As a fundamental pillar of Islam, zakat serves a crucial role in alleviating poverty and promoting social welfare. This study analyzes and compares zakat governance in two leading institutions in Jember: Amil Zakat Al-Baitul Amien and the Nurul Hayat Foundation, with a specific focus on empowering mustahiq (zakat recipients). Using a qualitative, descriptive approach, the research explores zakat governance practices based on data gathered through interviews with institutional managers, supported by insights from zakat practitioners and academics. The findings indicate that both institutions generally uphold the principles of good zakat governance and operate with professional standards. However, full optimization remains a challenge—particularly for Al-Baitul Amien. Both organizations have adopted digital technologies to improve zakat collection and service delivery, with the Nurul Hayat Foundation demonstrating greater technological integration. Despite its stronger performance, Nurul Hayat still faces areas for improvement, especially in achieving full accountability, transparency, and operational efficiency. Strengthening governance frameworks in both institutions is essential to unlock zakat’s full potential in empowering mustahiq and supporting sustainable socio-economic development
