Abstract

This research is an ethnomathematical research that aims to explore the mathematical abilities of the Bugis people in weaving the lipa’ sabbe. This study applies a qualitative method with an ethnographic approach. The data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation. Based on the results, it can be explained that in the process of weaving silk, the craftsmen combine the techniques of counting, designing, placing, and measuring as mathematical activity to produce various motifs. The weaver's ability to count and design motifs produces geometric planes that are transformed through a combination of reflection, translation, and dilatation. In making visualized motifs resembling curved planes such as the lagosi motif, the phinisi or the batumesang motif, they are approximated by using a collection of rectangular pixels from the arrangement of warp, weft and other motif yarns such as gold or viscose. The redesign of the silk motif uses the the number patterns identified on the arrangement of the yarns. In algebra, the lipa’ sabbe motif can be represented by a set of constant functions, parallel linear functions, or degree-n polynomial. The results of this study indicate that the mathematical concepts in lipa’ sabbe motifs are not only in the form of geometric concepts, but also include the concepts of number pattern, and algebra. Based on the manufacturing process and the resulting motifs indicate that the craftsmen have uniq mathematical abilities.

Abstract

This study aimed to identify the shell quality of Lohman brown strains. A total of 460 eggs aged 1–14 days from Lohman brown strains were collected from community farms in Gowa, South Sulawesi, Indonesia. The study variables included egg weight, egg index, shell weight, thickness, and percentage. Analysis was conducted using analysis of variance (ANOVA), and the difference in shelf life was analyzed using Duncan's multiple range test. The results revealed that egg weight, egg index, shell weight, shell thickness, and shell percentage significantly (P<0.05) affected egg age from 1 to 14 days. The study concluded that older Lohman Brown strain chicken eggs have reduced weight and shell thickness. Additionally, egg age significantly impacts shell weight, but shell thickness decreases as the egg ages. The color classification of eggshells over 14 days, as indicated by hex codes and sRGB values, shows significant variation, with the darkest brown occurring on days 6 and 11 and the lightest brown on day 1.

Abstract

Lagosi, a renowned woven fabric of national significance, involves a precise calculation formula in its manufacturing process. Craftsmen must meticulously count the threads to ensure the motif aligns with the intended design. Despite its importance, this aspect has not been thoroughly examined within the framework of Ethnomathematics. Consequently, this study investigates the mathematical practices employed by the Buginese people during the Lagosi weaving process, focusing on both the manufacturing procedures and the resultant motifs. Employing a qualitative methodology with an ethnographic approach, this research collected data through observation, interviews, and audio-visual documentation. The analysis utilized domain and taxonomic techniques to interpret the data. To ensure validity, both source and method triangulation were employed. The findings reveal that the crafting of Lagosi involves integrating counting, measuring, designing, and positioning techniques. Additionally, the study demonstrates that weaving artisans apply mathematical critical thinking skills in the production of Lagosi. The weaving process also reflects socio-cultural values such as diligence, perseverance, discipline, and faith. These insights contribute to a deeper understanding of mathematics in cultural contexts and offer valuable perspectives for contextual mathematics education by incorporating social values.

Abstract

Ethnomathematics can empirically improve the cognitive abilities of students in elementary and secondary schools. However, in undergraduate study, there are still limited studies on integrating ethnomathematics in learning resources. This study aims to apply interpolation in modelling polynomial functions and integral volume on the shape of Buginese and Makassarese traditional foods. Furthermore, it can be used by students as relevant learning resources regarding interpolation and the concept of volume of solid of revolution (VOSR). This is a qualitative study using an ethnographic approach. The data were collected through observations to obtain general information, interviews with informants to find out food-making techniques, and documentation to obtain physical models of each type of food. Data Analysis Techniques consist of the domain analysis to obtain an overview of Buginese and Makassarese traditional foods and the taxonomic analysis to categorize mathematical concepts obtained from the modeling and simulation. The result of this research reveals that lammang is suitable with the slabs. It can be represented as constant functions that revolved around the x-axis or the y-axis. While paso, bolu cukke, and cantik manis as well as barongko batara, Putu, and cucuru can be outlined in linear functions rotating about the x-axis, y-axis, or others fixed-line. They meet the criteria of the disks method. However, they are described in the function of polynomials of ndegree. The use of washers can be described in the model of blundered and sarang semut with a hole in the middle caused by the intersection of two curves rotated about the x-axis or the y-axis. For shells, the model can be applied to determine the cover volume of the cover of pisang ijo flour and onde-onde. Thus, all types of traditional foods in this study can be appropriate objects for a learning resource in modelling the VOSR.

Abstract

Errors in problem solving indicate that there are parts of the cognitive structure that are problematic, either because they are disorganized, disconnected or experiencing cognitive holes. thinking This research uses a qualitative approach. The data analysis technique used refers to the Miles and Huberman analysis model, namely data reduction, data presentation and finally drawing conclusions. The results showed that the three subjects studied were only S1 subjects who were able to answer all the questions given correctly without going through the defragmenting process, this was because the problem-solving thinking structure of the questions was classified as good, this success was supported by the level of cognitive understanding of the prerequisite material for the questions. good. While on the subject of S2, even though the conclusions of the answers already look correct, in one of the questions, it appears that there is an error in thinking which is categorized as pseudo, this error occurs because of the tendency to only pursue similarity questions and do not emphasize understanding mathematical concepts. The defragmenting efforts given are in the form of cognitive conflict interventions, scaffolding–restructuring and scaffolding explaning. While on the subject of S3, the low literacy ability in reading the test questions, as well as understanding the concept of the prerequisite material for the questions, causes errors at all stages of problem solving. The defragmenting efforts given are scaffolding-explaning intervention, scaffolding restructuring, cognitive conflict, scaffolding-review, disequilibration. The lack of knowledge about the prerequisite material so that more emphasis is placed on providing scaffolding-explaning.

Abstract

The low ability of students to understand and transform the concept of reflection to solve everyday problems is the main problem with learning mathematics because the implementation of learning mathematics is mechanical. Mathematics is taught by conveying formulas practically without linking them to students' daily activities. For this reason, this study aims to design a reflection learning trajectory in the context of the Lipa Sabbe Bunga Caramming motif as a starting point in learning to help students understand reflection material for solving everyday problems. The method used in this study is design research, which consists of three stages: preliminary design, design trials, and retrospective analysis. The subjects of this study were 23 students in class VIII-A of SMP Negeri 1 Tanasitolo. The instruments used in this study were student activity sheets (LAS), learning achievement tests, and interview guidelines. Student activity data during learning were analyzed retrospectively, and learning outcomes data were analyzed descriptively. The results of this study found that the learning trajectory of transformation geometry using the context of the lipa sabbe bunga caramming motif has four learning stages: (1) informal; (2) modes of; (3) modes of; and (4) formal. The learning stages can easily increase students' understanding of the concept of reflection. In the learning process, mathematical concepts are connected with daily habits, so students are enthusiastic and active in the learning process. This learning trajectory can assist teachers in optimizing learning so that students can easily understand the concept of reflection, equip them with critical thinking skills, and shape their character (cooperation, empathy, respect for others, awareness of social problems, a social spirit, and responsibility).
