Abstract

The coastal community of Tesabela Village, West Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, predominantly practices traditional seaweed farming methods, such as longline and off-bottom techniques, which limit production efficiency due to environmental challenges and lack of advanced technological knowledge. This study evaluates and disseminates innovative solutions, including Kajarula Technology, Biorula Biofertilizer, Rula Basket, and Selvarula (Selection of Seaweed Varieties). These innovations address critical issues such as sedimentation, pest disruptions, and suboptimal seaweed growth caused by inadequate farming methods and environmental conditions. Community engagement activities from July to October 2023 involved participatory training sessions, production assistance, and the distribution of farming inputs, benefiting 50 participants, including farmers, academics, and local leaders. The implementation of Selvarula was particularly suited for the local shallow water environment, offering a sustainable, cost-effective approach to improve productivity and seed quality. Results highlight the potential of integrating these technologies to empower the community through knowledge transfer, improved production methods, and economic resilience. This initiative underscores the importance of collaborative efforts between academia and local communities in fostering sustainable development in coastal areas.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis pengaruh variasi salinitas terhadap tingkat kelangsungan hidup dan perkembangan larva udang galah (Macrobrachium rosenbergii). Penelitian menggunakan rancangan percobaan dengan tiga perlakuan salinitas, yaitu 8 ppt (A), 12 ppt (B), dan 16 ppt (C). Parameter yang diamati meliputi tingkat kelangsungan hidup (Survival rate) dan laju perkembangan larva (Larva Stage Indeks (LSI)). Data dianalisis menggunakan uji ANOVA satu arah dan dilanjutkan dengan uji BNT. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan salinitas 12 ppt (B) menghasilkan tingkat kelangsungan hidup tertinggi dan berbeda nyata (P<0,05) dibandingkan perlakuan 8 ppt dan 16 ppt, sedangkan perlakuan 8 ppt dan 16 ppt tidak berbeda nyata. Nilai LSI akhir dan laju perkembangan larva juga tertinggi pada perlakuan 12 ppt dengan rata-rata laju perkembangan larva sebesar 8,4, diikuti 8 ppt (7,7) dan 16 ppt (7,5). Hasil ANOVA menunjukkan bahwa variasi salinitas berpengaruh signifikan terhadap perkembangan larva (F(2,8)=73,5; P<0,001). Perbedaan ini diduga berkaitan dengan beban osmotik dan kebutuhan energi untuk proses osmoregulasi. Dengan demikian, salinitas 12 ppt direkomendasikan sebagai kisaran optimal untuk pemeliharaan larva udang galah guna mendukung tingkat kelangsungan hidup dan perkembangan yang maksimal.

Biodiversitas 21: 3101-3107. Marine and coastal areas are susceptive to harmful algae presence which can lead to Harmful Algae Blooms (HABs). Major drivers for this event are climate change, domestic and industrial activities. These alter the environmental condition in marine ecosystems which caused the shift of phytoplankton community. This study aims to analyze the environmental factors affecting the harmful algae occurrence in Ambon Bay as well as the seasonal change during west monsoon and first transition in regards to this issue. There were six environmental variables accounted in this research which measured in situ and ex-situ. The results showed that there were three algae divisions that formed the phytoplankton structure in Ambon Bay, namely Bacillariophyceae, Dinophyceae, and Cyanophyceae. These divisions have been reported as the cause of previous HABs in the area. Furthermore, algae density during first transition season was higher than during west monsoon season, but the composition of phytoplankton community was stable in which dominated by harmful algae such as Chaetoceros, Skeletonema, Nitzschia, Ceratium, Pyrodinium, Dinophysis, Alexandrium, and Trichodesmium. Meanwhile, based on Canonical Correspondence Analysis (CCA), temperature and nutrients were the main factors that highly associated with the presence and abundance of harmful.

Abstract

Abstract. Usman Z, Hariyadi DR, Serihollo LGG. 2024. Species diversity and conservation status of ornamental fish traded in Kupang, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Biodiversitas 25: 1116-1126. The high demand for ornamental fish native to Indonesia has the potential to be used as a source of foreign exchange income. In addition to increasing the national income, the ornamental fish trade must also be considered to preserve the population of the fish species being sold. The study aimed to determine ornamental fish diversity and conservation status in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara. This research was conducted in Kupang City, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia, from August to September 2023. The research was conducted using survey (non-experiment) and observation methods. The survey method was carried out using a form to conduct interviews with sellers in 11 ornamental fish shops. At the same time, the observation method was used to identify the types of fish being traded. The study's results recorded 18 families, 39 genera, and 46 fish species (Include 1 species is hybrid fish). The highest species diversity came from the Cichlidae family with 9 species (1 species (Amphilophus citrinellus x Cichlasoma trimaculatum) is hybrid fish), followed by Cyprinidae with 7 species, whereas each species of the Characidae and Poecilidae families were 5 species. Conservation status shows 4 status groupings, namely Least Concern (LC), Vulnerable (VU), Endangered (EN), and Not Evaluated (NE). Based on these groupings, there were 32 species in the Least Concern (LC) category, 3 species in the Endangered (EN) category, 2 species in the Vulnerable (VU) category, and 8 species in the Not Evaluated (NE) and 1 unclassified category. There is only 1 species that is included in the Appendix I category, namely Scleropages formosus, and other species are Not evaluated. This is the first study conducted in Kupang City to reveal the types of ornamental fish species sold and their conservation status. The study will be useful information to the government, researchers, and other stakeholders on the potential extinction risk of each type of fish being traded.
