Abstract

Children with attention deficit and hyperactivity disorders can experience language and speech delays if not treated early. Based on initial observations in the field, it was found that a child with hyperactivity and attention deficit disorder or ADHD aged 3 years and 4 months was late in language development. At that age, children should be able to express desires, ask questions, answer simple questions, respond when called, and be interested in playing with their peers. From an early age, children need to receive intervention as soon as possible from their immediate environment, namely the family, so that children's obstacles can be minimized properly. For this reason, this research aims to develop a program that can improve the language skills of children with ADHD. This program is called Shoebox, which was developed based on the results of an assessment of children's language skills. The program will be implemented by the child's parents through a process of mentoring researchers first until the parents implement it independently. This research uses mixed research methods, namely qualitative research methods as the basis for program development, and quantitative research methods with SSR design to test the program's effectiveness. Data collection techniques are interviews, observation and documentation, and oral language behavior tests. The results of this research are a shoebox program which, based on effectiveness tests, shows that this program can improve speech-language skills in ADHD children.

Abstract

This research discusses the design of assistive technology, especially the Sensor Bike Program (Propesor) as an accommodative aid for children with hearing impairments, this tool is a follow-up to the child's inability to listen to sounds or sounds around him. This puts them in a dangerous situation when driving, therefore an innovative tool is needed that can help them to recognise sounds or sounds around them. The research method used is descriptive qualitative with data collection techniques through observation, interviews, assessments, and documentation studies to collect comprehensive data as a basis for developing tools that suit the needs of children. The result of this research is a hypothetical design of the Sensor Bike Program (Propesor) and is ready to be realised into a valid tool.

Abstract

The inability to achieve complete independence in students with special needs has the potential to make this group vulnerable to problems, including reproductive health and sexuality problems. These problems are suspected to be due to the lack of understanding and perception of teachers in the concept and implementation of reproductive health and sexuality education in Special Schools (SLB). This study was conducted to see teachers' understanding of reproductive health and sexuality education for students with special needs. Using a quantitative approach with a one-group pretest-posttest design, this study involved 15 teachers from six SLBs in Bandung City who were selected using the purposive sampling method. The data obtained were analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed-Rank Test. The results of the study showed a significant increase in the average score, indicating that the efforts made could improve teachers' understanding of reproductive health and sexuality education. Teachers felt more prepared to deal with the problems of students with special needs regarding reproductive health and sexuality after participating in competency refresher courses by participating in training or discussions. Training and discussions that are planned systematically, sustainably, and comprehensively can improve teacher competence and, more broadly, can improve the quality of reproductive health and sexuality education in SLB. Abstract

This study aims to improve the understanding of deaf students in class VII Junior High School at SLBN Cicendo on animal metamorphosis material through ecoterm media. The method used was classroom action research with five learners as subjects. The research instruments included interview guidelines, observations, and written objective test adapted to the independent phase D curriculum on animal metamorphosis material. In the pre-cycle stage, learning using conventional media (videos) only achieved classical completeness of 20%. After the application of ecoterm media, the completeness increased to 40% in cycle I and 100% in cycle II. The written test results also showed a gradual increase. The ecoterm media proved to be effective because it provided a concrete learning experience that involved various sensory modalities, making it easier to understand abstract concepts such as animal metamorphosis. This study concludes that ecoterm media can significantly improve deaf learners' understanding of animal metamorphosis learning materials, helping them achieve more optimal learning outcomes.

Abstract

The intense job competition and the low absorption rate of special needs school graduates in the business and industrial sectors are allegedly due to the ineffective implementation of the link-and-match concept. This study aims to analyze the challenges and opportunities faced by special needs schools in preparing students for the workforce through the Teaching Factory (TEFA) model. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected from two principals and six vocational skills teachers through interviews, observations, and document analysis. The results indicate that teacher competence in mastering vocational skills remains low, the curriculum oriented toward Competency-Based Training (CBT) and Production-Based Training (PBT) has not been properly accommodated, and infrastructure and financial resources are limited. However, several opportunities were identified, including principals’ good understanding of the TEFA concept, extensive partnerships with related institutions (Vocational High Schools and industries), vocational skills programs developed based on needs assessments, and vocational skills roadmaps aligned with school visions and missions. The study concludes that the main challenges faced by special needs schools revolve around human resources, financial resources, service programs, and infrastructure, while opportunities exist in human resources and service programs. These findings highlight that special needs schools continue to face significant obstacles in effectively implementing the TEFA model to prepare students for employment. Therefore, a proper and comprehensive analysis is necessary to identify operational strategies that can minimize challenges and maximize opportunities for special needs education in implementing an adaptive and accommodating TEFA model.

Abstract

Children with hearing impairments experience hearing loss from mild to profound, which is grouped into hard of hearing and deafness. The direct impact of hearing loss is the inability/difficulty to catch various sounds, including the sound of the language. Those with hearing impairments must be made aware of sound, especially children classified as hard of hearing, whose remaining hearing must be stimulated to train their sensitivity so that their hearing function can be optimized. Therefore, they are given special services in the form Development of Communication, Perception of Sound and Rhythm. The program provided must be under their learning conditions and needs; therefore, an assessment is needed. This study aimed to formulate an assessment instrument for sound and rhythm perception for children with hearing impairments at Special Education Elementary School. This study used a qualitative approach with a descriptive method. This study was designed in three stages: (1) preliminary stage with literature study  and documentation study on the curriculum for developing sound and rhythm perception communication,f (2) drafting stage of the assessment instrument for Sound and Rhythm Perception, and (3) validation stage of assessment instrument by measurement & education experts for children with hearing impairment and practitioners (teachers at Special Education School). The result was a hypothetical sound and rhythm perception assessment instrument that needed to be implemented at the next research stage. This instrument for assessing the perception of sound and rhythm covered the aspects of sound detection, sound discrimination, and sound comprehension. This study result can be used as a reference for teachers in carrying out a sound perception assessment before conducting a special program for Developing Communication for the Perception of Sound and Rhythm.

Abstract

The low understanding of basic fraction concepts among students with hearing impairment has led to difficulties in writing fractional numbers and performing addition and subtraction of fractions. This study aims to examine the effect of the active knowledge-sharing strategy on the learning outcomes in fractions of students with hearing impairment at SLBN Cicendo, Bandung City, specifically in writing simple fractions and performing addition and subtraction fractions with like denominators. This research used an experimental method using a one-group pretest-posttest design. The subjects were six students from Class VIII-A1 with hearing impairment. Data were collected through pretests and post-tests post-tests and analyzed using the Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test. The results showed that the average post-test score was higher than the average pretest score. The most significant improvement was observed in the indicator for calculating the addition and subtraction results of common fractions with like denominators. In contrast, the lowest improvement was found in the indicator for writing simple fractions using concrete and semi-concrete media.
