Abstract

Abstract

The creative economy has become an important driver of economic development, particularly within the growing and globally interconnected Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions (MICE) industry. This study examines how collaboration among local creative economy subsectors supports the integration of Surakarta’s creative economy into the global MICE value chain (GVC). Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through interviews with key stakeholders and analysis of creative economy and MICE development programs from 2020–2024. The study focuses on patterns of inter-subsector collaboration, institutional facilitation, and their relationship to the global MICE value chain structure. The findings show that collaboration among culinary, craft, performing arts, fashion, and digital media subsectors has strengthened local capacities and supported MICE activities in Surakarta. Local government facilitation has also contributed to coordination, capacity-building, and the readiness of local actors to engage in the MICE industry. However, integration into the global value chain remains limited due to restricted access to international networks, global standards, and partnerships with global MICE actors. Although local collaboration has improved, Surakarta’s creative economy is still positioned at a partial integration stage within the global MICE value chain. This study contributes to GVC literature by emphasizing the importance of local collaboration, institutional support, and global connectivity in strengthening participation in international MICE industries.

Abstract

This study examines how creative economy subsectors in Solo City collaborate to strengthen the city’s global competitiveness as an international MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) destination. Previous studies have largely examined creative economy subsectors separately and have paid limited attention to the integration of collaborative governance and Global Value Chain (GVC) perspectives within the context of MICE development. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from seven key informants through semi-structured interviews, focus group discussions, observations, and document analysis. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, consisting of data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings show that Solo’s creative economy subsectors significantly strengthen the city’s cultural identity and attractiveness as a MICE destination. However, collaboration among stakeholders remains fragmented and largely event-based, while integration into the global MICE value chain is constrained by weak institutional coordination, limited international networking, and insufficient digital capacity. The study further demonstrates that collaborative governance contributes to value chain upgrading by strengthening institutional coordination, knowledge sharing, and cross-sector collaboration, thereby creating opportunities for process and functional upgrading within the MICE ecosystem. The main contribution of this study lies in integrating Collaborative Governance and Global Value Chain perspectives to explain how collaborative mechanisms facilitate value chain upgrading and enhance the international competitiveness of medium-sized culture-based MICE destinations.

Abstract

This study evaluates the digital public relations (PR) strategy of the Surakarta City Tourism Office in enhancing sustainable tourism communication through social media and digital promotional content. The research employs a qualitative descriptive approach with the CIPP (Context, Input, Process, and Product) evaluation model to assess the effectiveness, implementation, and impact of the city’s digital communication practices. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, observation, and documentation involving tourism officials, creative community members, and online audiences. The findings reveal that Surakarta has made significant progress in adopting digital communication to strengthen its city branding as a cultural and creative destination. However, the integration of sustainability messages—such as environmental awareness, cultural preservation, and community empowerment—remains limited. From the input perspective, human and technological resources are available but require capacity development and consistent strategic alignment. In terms of process, the digital PR activities focus mainly on event promotion and aesthetic storytelling, while participatory and educational content is less emphasized. At the product level, digital engagement has improved visibility and audience interaction but has not yet resulted in long-term sustainability awareness. The study concludes that Surakarta’s digital PR strategy is effective in enhancing destination image but less effective in embedding sustainability communication. Strengthening sustainability-driven storytelling, participatory collaboration, and digital capacity building is recommended to achieve more inclusive and responsible tourism communication. Theoretically, this research contributes to expanding the use of the CIPP evaluation model in the study of digital communication governance and sustainable destination management.

Abstract

The phenomenon of game Live Streaming on YouTube presents a unique pattern of virtual communication between streamers and viewers. This study aims to describe the interaction patterns between the streamer Xccurate and viewers during the Live Streaming of the game VALORANT, as well as the role of interactive features in fostering audience engagement. Using a descriptive qualitative method, data were collected through digital observation, structured interviews, and documentation, with data validity tested using the triangulation technique. The theories applied include Virtual Communication, Interactive Communication, and Interaction Patterns (synchronous, asynchronous, one-to-one, one-to-many, many-to-many). The results show that the interaction pattern is dominated by synchronous communication via live chat, with one-to-many as the primary pattern, followed by one-to-one and many-to-many. Features such as Super Chat, emojis, membership stickers, and polling strengthen participation, while moderators maintain the quality of conversation. The combination of a relaxed communication style and the use of interactive features results in dynamic, participatory, and multidirectional interactions. Abstract

This study, entitled "Persuasive Communication by the Indonesian Red Cross Public Relations Unit in Raising Public Awareness of Blood Donation," is a topic of discussion. Low public awareness of blood donation remains a serious problem in various regions, including Grobogan Regency. Data shows that the number of voluntary donors is insufficient to meet the increasing annual need for blood, resulting in blood supply often not being balanced with demand. This situation creates problems in healthcare services and even poses a risk to patient safety. This study aims to determine and analyze how persuasive communication is used by the Indonesian Red Cross (PMI) Public Relations Unit in Grobogan Regency to raise public awareness of blood donation. The study used a descriptive qualitative method with a case study approach, involving interviews with public relations personnel and the community, and documentation as data sources. This study utilizes Burgoon and Huffiner's persuasive communication theory as a conceptual foundation, focusing on the components of the communicator, message, media/channel, recipient, and communication effects. The research results show that PMI Public Relations plays a role as a communicator, crafting persuasive messages using both rational (medical facts, benefits of blood donation) and emotional (humanitarian values, empathy) approaches. These messages were delivered through direct communication (public outreach), print media (banners, brochures), and digital media (Instagram, Facebook, and WhatsApp). Public responses varied, but the majority indicated increased understanding, growing awareness, and active participation in blood donation activities. The persuasive messages were crafted by emphasizing cognitive, affective, and conative aspects, in accordance with the Burgon & Huffner framework, combining factual information and emotional appeal to influence public knowledge, attitudes, and behavior. Public responses varied, but most demonstrated positive changes in the form of increased understanding, growing empathy, and active participation in blood donation activities. These findings confirm that credible, systematic, and adaptive persuasive communication can strengthen PMI's positive image and encourage community involvement. Thus, a persuasive communication strategy is an important instrument in maintaining blood stock availability while building social and humanitarian solidarity.   Keywords: Persuasive Communication, Public Relations, Indonesian Red Cross, Public Awareness.
