Abstract

This study aims to describe the dynamics of changes in children’s social–emotional functioning before and after napping in early childhood education institutions that provide childcare services. Employing a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study design, the study investigates children’s behavioral patterns in a naturalistic setting through observations and semi-structured interviews. The participants comprised three children (two typically developing and one with special needs) along with three accompanying teachers, selected using convenience total sampling technique due to their availability at the research site. Data were analyzed using thematic analysis encompassing open coding, axial coding, and selective coding procedures. The findings identified three major themes: first, a significant improvement was observed in emotional regulation, autonomy, and social interaction following nap time. Second, substantial individual variations emerged, particularly in the child with special needs, who required more intensive co-regulation support. Third, the nap time experience was influenced by multifactorial interactions, including daily routines, physical environment, caregiver support, and parent, educator communication. These findings reinforce our understanding of emotional regulation, socio-emotional competence, and executive functioning in child development. The present study offers practical implications for policies regarding flexible nap time arrangements in full-day or daycare early childhood education settings and is aligned with SDG 3 (mental health and well-being) and SDG 4.2 (access to quality early childhood education).

Abstract

This study aims to examine strategies for integrating character education in Early Childhood Education (ECE) to enhance children’s positive emotional development. Character education is considered a fundamental foundation for fostering personality development, self-regulation, and social skills during early childhood. This study employed a qualitative descriptive approach involving six ECE teachers selected based on teaching experience and active engagement in classroom practices. Data were collected through observations and in-depth interviews conducted in Purwakarta Regency, West Java, Indonesia, in 2025. The findings indicate that character education was consistently embedded in daily learning activities through lesson planning using the B3 approach (Playing, Storytelling, and Singing), supported by teacher modeling. Core character values such as independence, empathy, discipline, and responsibility emerged as dominant outcomes, contributing to children’s emotional regulation, self-confidence, and social awareness. Teacher consistency and parent collaboration were identified as key supporting factors, while diverse child characteristics and limited parental involvement posed challenges. This study offers a theoretical contribution to the discourse on character education in ECE and supports the achievement of SDG 4 (Quality Education) and SDG 3 (Good Health and Well-being).

Abstract

Purpose – This study analyzes how lived Islamic parenting is practiced by Muslim mothers with high work mobility and how these practices contribute to early childhood resilience in urban Muslim families. Transnational family literature is used as a conceptual lens to understand constraints on physical presence and the maintenance of communication, not to equate the migration context. Design/methods/approach – This interpretive qualitative study used a multiple case study design involving Muslim families in an urban area of West Java (pseudonymized). Participants consisted of 10 mothers with children aged 3 to 6 years, selected through criterion-based purposive sampling; sample adequacy was justified using the principle of information power. Data were collected through semi-structured in-depth interviews (45 to 60 minutes) and observations focused on moments of mother-child interaction (for example, after returning from work and before bedtime), as well as non-sensitive supporting materials if agreed upon. Analysis was conducted using reflexive thematic analysis and cross-case synthesis. Findings – The analysis produced four themes. First, Islamic parenting practices are sustained through micro routines at transition moments, primarily role modeling and the habituation of worship practices that are concise and flexible. Second, religious socialization occurs through the maintenance of emotional presence, including consistent long-distance communication and the use of value language (sabar, adab, doa) when responding to children’s emotions. Third, resilience appears as recovery after pressure or failure when affective support is prioritized, after which simple religious routines are used to soothe and encourage children to try again and to express feelings. Fourth, fatigue, time constraints, and digital exposure drive the negotiation of practices through minimum routines and value-based device accompaniment. Research implications – The findings support the design of value-based micro routines at transition moments, the use of Islamic moral vocabulary for emotion coaching preceded by affective support, consistent long-distance communication to maintain continuity of value socialization, and digital parenting through accompaniment, restriction, brief explanations, and content redirection in early childhood education.
