Abstract

ABSTRACT  This research aimed at improving students’ reading comprehension by implementing  PORPE technique. Subjects of the research were the second semester students of class G taking reading 1 subject. The research used classroom action research method which was done in two cycles. The data were collected by reading comprehension test for measuring the student’s reading comprehension, observing the teaching learning process for collecting the class condition, and questionnaire for collecting student’s perception toward PORPE learning technique. The results of the research show that (1) the implementation of PORPE technique was able to improve learning process of reading, in which the students become more active and enthusiastic in attending reading class. Therefore, the learning process of reading ran more dynamic. (2) The score of students’ reading comprehensions also improved significantly at the end of each cycle. (3) In terms of students’ perception, generally the students have positive and good respond toward the PORPE technique for teaching and learning reading comprehension.Keywords: PORPE technique, reading comprehension, students’ reading comprehensionABSTRAK Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk meningkatkan kemampuan membaca pemahaman mahasiswa dengan menerapkan teknik pembelajaran PORPE. Subjek dari penelitian ini yaitu mahasiswa semester II kelas G yang mengambil mata kuliah Reading 1. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian tindakan kelas yang  dilaksanakan  dalam  dua siklus. Data dikumpulkan melalui tes membaca pemahaman untuk mengukur kemampuan membaca pemahaman mahasiswa, pengamatan terhadap proses pembelajaran reading untuk mengetahui kondisi proses pembelajaran di kelas, dan kuisioner untuk mengumpulkan data persepsi  mahasiswa  terhadap teknik PORPE. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa: (1) Penerapan  teknik  PORPE  mampu  memperbaiki  proses  pembelajaran  reading, yang mana mahasiswa menjadi  lebih  aktif dan antusias dalam  mengikuti pembelajaran reading. Oleh karena itu proses pembelajaran reading menjadi lebih dinamis. (2) Skor kemampuan membaca pemahaman mahasiswa juga mengalami peningkatan yang signifikan pada setiap akhir siklus. (3) Dalam hal persepsi mahasiswa, secara umum mahasiswa meliki respon yang baik dan positif terhadap penerapan teknik PORPE dalam proses pembelajaran reading.Kata kunci: teknik PORPE, membaca pemahaman, kemampuan membaca pemahaman mahasiswa

Abstract

The process of English Learning before and during Covid-19 pandemic is very difference. The learning process which is conducted at school has changed into distance learning process. All schools are required to implement e-learning to support the distance learning process. This study was aimed at analyzing students’ e-learning readiness toward the implementation of e-learning at SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan. A mixed-method research design utilizing concurrent embedded model which is a quantitative method as a primer method was employed in this study. A questionnaire of students’ e-learning readiness and an observation sheet were used to collect the data. The obtained data were then analyzed quantitatively and qualitatively. The result of the study showed that the readiness of SMK Negeri 1 Kubutambahan students in using e-learning in the context of distance learning is classified on ready category which still needs some improvement. From the four aspects of readiness assessed, there is one aspect that belongs to unready category that requires a little improvement, namely the technological aspect. Meanwhile, the other three aspects, namely aspects of innovation, people, and self-development belong to the ready category which requires a little improvement in its implementation.

Abstract

The decline in character that occurred in Indonesia made the Government emphasize character education in every school. This study aims to identify the five core values proposed by the Ministry of Education and Culture (2017) contained in the characterization of Eustace Scrubb in the novel entitled The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of The Dawn Treader. This research is qualitative research. The results of this study found 15 characterizations of Eustace Scrubb, namely naughty, impolite, selfish, arrogant, greedy, deceitful, fearful, bad-tempered, cooperative, honest, courageous, willing to sacrifice, helpful, curious, and friendly. There were also changes in several characterizations from bad characters to good characters. From 15 characterizations, there are 7 characterizations which are included in the five core values, namely friendly which is included in the value of religious character, willing to sacrifice is included in the values of nationalist character, courage, and curiosity which are included in the value of the character of independent, helpful and cooperative including in the value of mutual cooperation, and honest is included in the value of integrity character. The results showed that children's novels can be used as a medium to teach character education to children. Children's novels contain character values that can be used as examples for children in learning good characters. Thus, an implication can be drawn from the study in relation to raising teachers’ awareness in using stories to teach character values.

Abstract

Implementing a good character education from an early age will form a qualified personality for children. Societies use novels in embedding the value of character education. This research aimed to analyze the characterization of Harry Potter in a novel entitled “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows”. The character was analysed based on five core values of character education proposed by the Ministry of Education and Culture of Indonesia; religious, nationalist, independent, mutual cooperation, & integrity. This research was conducted in descriptive qualitative research design. The data collection technique used were close reading and note taking. The obtained information were analyzed through textual analysis. Data triangulation, theory triangulation, and investigator triangulation were used to check the trustworthiness of the data. The findings showed that Harry Potter had 20 characterizations and 11 values of character education which were portrayed through the action, speech, and direct description by the author in the story. Relating to the context of Indonesian’s character building used as a research foundation, some identified characterizations have occupied the five cores values mentioned. The religious and mutual cooperation values were more emphasized in the whole story. Implication related to the use of this finding as a future learning-material was provided

Abstract

English is one of the languages that are used in universal and the important thing to all people learnt nowadays. As an EFL learner learning English is not easy especially in a pandemic situation. The students cannot study face to face and should change into emergency remote teaching. In doing the online learning the students find difficulties such as they have a limited time in learning. The aimed of this study is to explore the anxiety level of students and teachers in learning English during emergency remote teaching. Therefore, study through online learning is a new thing for them. The method of this study was quantitative to collect the data. The data was done by doing the survey and giving a questionnaire that was develop based on FLACS. The participants of this study are 183 students of 10th grade and 4 teachers of English language in vocational high school in Bangli. The result of this study showed that the students’ anxiety was mildly anxious or it can be indicated as a moderate level of anxiety and for the teachers was relaxed or it can be indicated as a low level of anxiety. It can be concluded that the students in learning English not enjoyed but not nervous it is in the middle. For the teacher, they really relaxed in teaching English during the emergency remote teaching.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to discover high school students’ general perception about the implementation of Google Classroom as an online learning media, and the factors that influenced the development of the perception. This research used Mixed-method research design as described by Creswell (2014). Subject of this study was the student population of SMAS Lab Undiksha Singaraja. The instruments used for this research were Questionnaire and Interview Guide. The instruments were tested by using Gregory Formula Method and Cronbach-Alpha method. The data that have been obtained was analyzed using quantitative and qualitative method. The result of the research showed that the students of SMAS Lab Undiksha Singaraja held a positive view on the benefits of Google Classroom and its implementation as online learning media. Factors that have influenced this perception are Google Classroom’s ubiquity, students’ familiarity with Google Classroom, Google Classroom’s ease of use and stability in comparison to other similar applications.

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the students’ and teacher’s challenges in learning EFL in distance learning context for 162 eleventh grade students and one English teacher in SMK Nusa Dua Toya Anyar Kubu, Karangasem in the academic year of 2020/2021. This study used mixed-method as the data were collected through questionnaire for the quantitative data and interview for qualitative data. The quantitative data were analyzed by using SPSS to find the mean score and used TCR guidelines of categorization developed from Sugiyono (2017), while the qualitative data were analyzed according to the steps by Miles and Huberman (1994). The result of students’ challenges are found that the challenges related to instructional variables (lack of explanation from teachers and limited opportunity to practice four English basic skills) were categorized the highest challenges experienced by the students compared to in institutional and individual variables. In addition, the result for the teacher’s data analysis found that the evaluation and assessment variables are the highest challenges compared to access and motivation variables. Understanding the role of teacher as the instructor in distance learning is important to improve students’ ability and can minimize the students’ challenges in distance learning. Abstract

This current study aims to identify teachers’ and students’ readiness in utilizing MALL during distance teaching and to investigate factors affect the readiness in using MALL in the context of online teaching.  In conducting the study, a mix method with a survey was conducted. The data were collected through questionnaire and interview. This study involved the English teachers and students in SMA Negeri 1 Mengwi. The result of data analysis found that teachers are ready but requires some improvement to use MALL in the context of online teaching. It can be seen from the overall mean score of teachers’ readiness (3.91) (Technology=4.50, Ability to Adapt=4.06 Openness=4.06, People=3.81, Budget=3.50, and Believe=3.25). Meanwhile, the students were categorized as not ready with 3.25 mean score. Mean score from all indicators are also lower than teacher (Technology=3.57, Ability to Adapt=3.45 Openness=3.45, People=3.16, Budget=2.87, and Believe=3.03). There are several factors that support the readiness of teachers and students in implementing MALL. Mainly in terms of technology and budget readiness.

Abstract

This study intended to analyze types of code-mixing and determine the motive of code-mixing used by the seventh-semester students of English Language Education on Facebook. Descriptive qualitative was used as the design of this study since it focused on a single case of code-mixing. Therefore, this study only focused on Indonesia-English code-mixing used by the student. Moreover, the data were gained by observing students’ Facebook posts, comments, and Facebook stories. The data were also gained by interviewing the selected subject by using an interview guide. Furthermore, the collected data were analyzed by using Ho’s theory, Myusken’s theory, Hoffman’s theory, Hockett’s theory, and Saville-Troike’s theory. Based on data analysis, the result of the study showed that Lexical Word was the most frequently used by the student, with a total number of 41 (33%) from 142 occurrences. Meanwhile, talking about a particular topic was the most reason underlying student in using code-mixing on Facebook by 12 (27%) of the subject picked.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate students' perceptions of English teacher competences at SMK Negeri 1 Sawan. Pedagogy, personality, social, and professional competence were among the competencies assessed. The mixed method was used in this study. The data for this study were gathered quantitatively and qualitatively through the use of an online questionnaire and an interview guide. In the academic year 2020/2021, twelfth-grade students were given an online questionnaire. The questionnaire was completed by 152 students. The interviews were conducted with fifteen students.
