Abstract

Parents’ interest in enrolling their children in Islamic Elementary Schools is remarkably high, even though the cost of attending these schools is relatively expensive. This contrasts with public schools, which are generally free of charge. This study aims to explore and explain why Islamic Elementary Schools are highly preferred by Indonesian Muslim communities, particularly parents. The research employs a qualitative method with a case study approach. Research data were collected through in-depth interviews with five participants, consisting of the principal, teachers, and parents, and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s Interactive Model. The findings indicate that parents’ interest in sending their children to Islamic Elementary Schools is influenced by three main factors: theological, sociological, and academic. (i) The theological factor refers to parents’ perspectives based on religious considerations. (ii) The sociological factor relates to the growing positive image of Islamic schools in Indonesia. (iii) The academic factor is associated with the schools’ ability to achieve high academic performance among both students and teachers. These results provide preliminary insights for future researchers to examine this issue in different contexts and with broader analytical perspectives.

Abstract

In the early days of the Quran's revelation, there were only two reasons why the companions memorized the Quran: sincere intentions for Allah and to preserve the purity of the Quran. However, today, there are various motivations for memorizing the Quran. The purpose of this study is to determine the motivations for memorizing the Quran among students at Quranic colleges in Indonesia. To achieve this research objective, the author used two approaches, namely qualitative and quantitative. In the first stage, the author employed a qualitative approach involving twenty participants who were interviewed in depth. The participants were selected using purposive sampling techniques from the 2019, 2020, and 2021 cohorts. The collected data were then analyzed thematically using NVivo. The results of the first stage of the study identified nine motivations for students to memorize the Quran. These findings became the basis for the author to conduct the second stage of research using a quantitative approach. The nine motivations for memorizing the Quran were used as instruments, compiled in a Likert scale format to collect data on students’ motivations. This was done to confirm the findings in the first stage of research. In the second stage, the author involved 250 participants from a total of 1,500 students at Quranic colleges in Indonesia. The collected data were then analyzed using IBM SPSS Statistics 26 software. The results of the second stage showed consistency with the first stage. This study provides an overview of students’ motivations for memorizing the Quran at Quranic higher education institutions in Indonesia and shows that there has been a shift in the motives for memorization. Further studies need to revisit the issue of motivation in the context of restoring the purity of intention or making these nine motivations a reference for future research on Quran memorization.

Abstract

There are gaps between vocational engineering curricula and industry competency needs, especially in information and communication technology (ICT) competency. However, limited studies have been conducted on factors affecting ICT competency among vocational engineering students, particularly attitudes toward ICT utilization. Thus, this study aims to determine the attitude and the relationship toward ICT competency among vocational engineering students based on the Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology II (UTAUT II). It was conducted in Higher Education Institutions in West Sumatera, Indonesia. It was a survey study with a quantitative method that used one set of questionnaires to collect data. Respondents are 805, covering first-year and last-year students enrolled in those institutions by purposive sampling. Data were analyzed descriptively for mean and standard deviation, and inferentially by employing Pearson Correlation. Findings showed that the ICT competency among vocational engineering students was lower than their attitude toward ICT utilization. A high attitude only is not enough to support the competency. Thus, this study can be used as a guide by the relevant authorities such as the Ministry of Education Affairs to take action to enhance the ICT competency among vocational engineering students from other aspects.
