Abstract

Abstract

Acne (Acne vulgaris) is caused by colonization of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria on the skin. The use of natural ingredients with antimicrobial activity for acne medication is an attractive alternative because it is considered safer than chemical ingredients. Lemongrass shows antibacterial activity. Lemongrass acne gel preparations can inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes bacteria. This study aims to formulate the preparation and antibacterial activity of lemongrass essential oil toner. The method used is an experimental method. Variations in the concentration of lemongrass essential oil (Cymbopogon nardus) were tested at 10%, 20%, and 30%. The essential oil was produced using steam distillation. The physical quality of the toner formulation was tested using organoleptic testing, homogeneity testing, pH testing, and viscosity testing. This was followed by irritation testing, hedonic testing, and antibacterial activity testing of the toner formulation. Data analysis was performed using One-way ANOVA and Post Hoc. The acne-fighting toner based on lemongrass essential oil exhibited good physical characteristics, including a slightly opaque white color, a distinctive lemongrass aroma, a liquid texture that absorbs easily into the skin, and visual homogeneity. pH and viscosity tests showed significant differences between formulations, but all remained within safe ranges. Irritation tests showed that all formulations are safe for use as they did not cause negative reactions on the volunteers' skin. Based on hedonic testing, the formulation with a 20% concentration was most preferred by panelists in terms of aroma and color. Antibacterial activity testing showed that all concentrations (10%, 20%, and 30%) were able to inhibit the growth of Propionibacterium acnes, with effectiveness increasing as the concentration increased. The 10% formulation already demonstrated moderate antibacterial activity, while the 20% and 30% formulations fall into the strong category. Therefore, the lemongrass essential oil toner is effective and safe for use as an acne treatment, with an optimal concentration of 20%.

Abstract

Background: Hypertension is a leading global health problem, with poor adherence to treatment remaining a major barrier to effective control. Mindfulness has emerged as a supportive strategy for improving adherence and self-care. However, the effectiveness in non-Western hypertensive populations remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a culturally adapted mindfulness intervention on blood pressure, medication adherence, and self-care in patients with hypertension in Indonesia. Methods: A nonrandomized quasi-experimental pretest-posttest control group design was employed. 40 adults aged 18-40 years with stage 1 hypertension were recruited through purposive sampling, and the minimum sample size was determined using power analysis (G*Power 3.1), resulting in a minimum of 15 participants per group. To account for attrition, 20 participants were recruited per group. We excluded adults with coronary heart disease, pregnancy, concurrent complementary therapies, or prior mindfulness experience. The study followed the TREND guideline for nonrandomized evaluations. Participants were allocated to an intervention group (n = 20) that received an eight-week culturally adapted mindfulness program delivered in group and individual sessions, or to a control group (n = 20) that received standard care. Data were collected at baseline, post-intervention, and one-month follow-up, using a validated digital sphygmomanometer (blood pressure), the Morisky Medication Adherence Scale-8 (medication adherence), and the Self-Care of Hypertension Inventory (self-care). Ethical clearance was obtained from the institutional review board (No. 109/VII/AUEC/2024), and data were analysed using repeated-measures ANOVA and independent t-tests. Results: Participants in the intervention group experienced significant reductions in systolic and diastolic blood pressure and improved medication adherence compared with the control group, with effects sustained at follow-up (time x group interaction: SBP F = 8.33, p < 0.001, η² = 0.15; DBP F = 7.01, p = 0.002, η² = 0.13; MMAS-8 F = 15.27, p < 0.001, η² = 0.24). Self-care scores increased significantly post-intervention (p = 0.030) but declined at follow-up, with no significant group difference at T2 (p > 0.05). Baseline characteristics were comparable between groups, ensuring equivalence. Conclusion: A culturally adapted mindfulness program effectively improved blood pressure control and medication adherence in Indonesian patients with hypertension, although self-care benefits diminished over time. These findings suggest that mindfulness-based interventions can be a feasible, low-cost complement to standard care, particularly in resource-limited settings. Future studies with larger samples, longer follow-up, and reinforcement strategies are recommended to sustain self-care behaviours.

Abstract

Lemongrass (Cymbogoncitratus (DC.) Stapf) leaves contain alkaloids, saponins, tannins, anthraquinones, steroids, phenols and flavonoids. Flavonoids act as antioxidants as they can reduce free radicals. This study aims to determine the total flavonoid content, antioxidant activity, and IC50 value of lemongrass leaf extract (Cymbogoncitratus (DC.) Stapf). Extracts were made by maceration using 96% ethanol as solvent. Testing of total flavonoid content with the AlCl3 method using UV-Vis spectrophotometry was carried out three times. The antioxidant activity test used the FRAP (ferric reducing antioxidant power) method on extracts containing 100, 200, 300, 400, and 500 ppm. The test results showed that the leaf extract of citronella (Cymbogoncitratus (DC.) Stapf) had a total flavonoid content of 22,60 mg QE/g extract. Furthermore, there was antioxidant activity in the leaf extract of lemongrass (Cymbogoncitratus (DC.) Stapf indicated by the formation of a blue color purplish when reacted with FRAP solution, and IC50 extract value was 71,59 ppm and included in the category of strong antioxidants.

Abstract

One of the herbal plants that have medicinal properties is Abrus precatorius L or commonly known as Saga in Indonesia. Empirically, the boiled water of saga leaves is widely used as an ingredient in cough medicine, cancer sores and swollen tonsils. The chemical constituents of antibacterial activity in the saga leaves are glycosides (abrusoside AD and abrusgenin), flavonoids and saponins (glycerin). This study aims to determine the antibacterial activity of extracts and fractions from saga leaves and the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) and Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) of the most active fraction of saga leaves on the growth of Streptococcus mutans ATCC 25175. Saga leaf powder was macerated using 96% ethanol, then fractionated using n-hexane, ethyl acetate, water as solvent, 96% ethanol extract, and n-hexane fraction. The antibacterial activity test using the diffusion method showed that the extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and water fraction of saga leaves had antibacterial activity against Streptococcus mutans. The most active fraction was the ethyl acetate fraction, with a concentration of 50% with an average inhibition zone diameter of 12.2 mm. The ethyl acetate fraction from saga leaves had the most active antibacterial activity compared to ethanol extract, n-hexane fraction, ethyl acetate fraction, and water fraction, as seen from the average diameter of the inhibition zone obtained. The test results of the dilution method of the ethyl acetate fraction of saga leaves showed a Minimum Inhibitory Concentration of 12.5% and a Minimum Killing Concentration of 25%.
