Abstract

This research investigates the types and frequency of politeness strategies employed by English Education students during online academic interactions via WhatsApp, with a particular emphasis on how students uphold politeness and demonstrate respect toward lecturers within a virtual learning environment. Utilizing a descriptive qualitative approach, the study analyzed 200 utterances derived from constructed chat transcripts. The data were examined through the lens of Brown and Levinson’s (1987) politeness theory, encompassing positive politeness, negative politeness, bald on record, and off record strategies. Findings indicate that positive politeness strategies predominated (57.5%), followed by negative politeness strategies (30%), with bald on record and off record approaches appearing less frequently. This distribution highlights the students’ pragmatic awareness and the influence of cultural norms in sustaining courteous academic discourse. The study contributes to the fields of linguistics, pragmatics, and English language education by offering insights into students’ digital communicative behavior. It also informs educators and teacher preparation programs about the pragmatic competencies necessary for professional interaction in online academic spaces. The novelty of the study lies in its focus on the simulated digital exchanges of English Education students, bridging theoretical pragmatics with pedagogical application, and enriching the discourse on digital pragmatics within the Indonesian higher education landscape.

Abstract

Learner autonomy is a critical yet underdeveloped skill among Indonesian EFL students, who often exhibit a high dependence on teachers, particularly in vocabulary acquisition. This study addresses this gap by investigating the extent to which self-directed learning via mobile applications enhances both vocabulary mastery and learner autonomy. A mixed-methods design was employed, involving 20 undergraduate English education students who engaged in a three-week self-regulated vocabulary program using Quizlet and Duolingo. Data were collected via pre- and post-tests, an autonomy questionnaire, and semi-structured interviews.Quantitatively, the results demonstrated a significant improvement in vocabulary mastery (mean score rise from 56.3 to 72.5; $p < 0.01$). Notably, the strongest gains were observed in the contextual application of words, suggesting deeper processing facilitated by the mobile tools. The autonomy questionnaire further indicated substantial positive changes, with the overall mean score increasing from 3.1 to 3.9 on a five-point scale. The most pronounced growth was found in the sub-constructs of self-monitoring (3.0 to 4.0) and persistence (3.3 to 4.1). Supporting these numerical findings, interview data revealed that students highly valued the gamified motivation and the flexibility of learning, which fostered a sense of ownership. Challenges reported primarily related to internet instability and distractions. The study concludes that the systematic integration of mobile applications effectively enhances vocabulary acquisition while simultaneously cultivating key aspects of learner autonomy. These findings underscore the imperative for EFL educators to utilize mobile technology as a core resource for developing independent, self-regulated language learners..

Abstract

This study aims to determine the effect of radiation on the number of leukocytes, erythrocytes, and thrombocytes in cervical cancer patients before and after radiotherapy. This study was conducted at the radiotherapy facility of Arifin Achmad Regional General Hospital in Pekanbaru using a quantitative research method with a retrospective approach and secondary data from the medical records of 18 stage IIB–IIIB cervical cancer patients who underwent total radiotherapy of 50 Gy in 25 fractions. Data analysis was performed using the paired sample t-test and Wilcoxon signed rank test. The results showed a decrease in the mean leukocyte count from 10,18×10³/µL to 6,81×10³/µL, erythrocyte count from 3,92×10⁶/µL to 3,55×10⁶/µL, and platelet count from 253,72×10³/ µL to 181,39×10³/µL. Statistical tests showed a significant difference (p<0.05) between before and after radiotherapy. It was concluded that linac radiation had a significant effect on the decrease in the number of leukocytes, erythrocytes, and platelets in cervical cancer patients, so routine blood monitoring during therapy was necessary to prevent hematological complications.

Abstract

People cannot attain a communicative goal unless their words address specific cultural or contextual challenges. Thus, language is viewed as a social tool to assist humans in conveying meaning; but, this meaning cannot be obtained if words are conveyed in isolation. As a result, we require contexts or settings in which more phrases and words can be placed in order for listeners or readers to comprehend the meaning behind utterances and words. By applying Halliday’s Systemic Functional Linguistics Theory, this study aims to observe one of three types of meanings, it was ideational meanings. It focuses on language which is used by people in both types of local and regional newspapers to convey information or messages about the experiences of the speakers. Each speaker used different clauses which contained dependent and independent clauses that we call clause complex. To analyze the aspect of projection; Hypotactic Locution, Paratactic Locution, Hypotactic Idea, Paratactic Idea, and Quasi-Projection which were used or appeared in Indonesian newspapers’ story texts. The significance of the study is to improve students’ linguistic knowledge and their writing skill by mastering text structures.

Abstract

Writing is a crucial skill in English that requires accuracy in using capitalization and punctuation to convey meaning effectively. This study aims to analyze EFL university students' capitalization and punctuation accuracy in academic writing. The research employed a qualitative descriptive method. The data were collected from the academic writing of first semester students at Universitas Pembinaan Masyarakat Indonesia Medan and analyzed using an error analysis approach. The findings indicate that students still experience difficulties in applying appropriate rules. The highest correct usage was found in periods (80 occurrences) and commas (73 occurrences), while the use of exclamation marks (4 occurrences) and question marks (3 occurrences) was relatively low. Errors were also frequently identified in the capitalization of proper nouns (18 occurrences) and sentence beginnings (87 occurrences). In addition, students tended to rely on simple sentence structures, which limited the variety of punctuation used.Overall, students’ accuracy is categorized at a moderate level. Therefore, more focused instruction and practice are recommended to improve students’ academic writing skills.
