Abstract

Purpose. This study aims to analyze the transition from the 2013 Curriculum (K-13) to the Merdeka Curriculum in Indonesia by examining the shift from standardization to flexibility. It addresses the need to understand the rationale, implementation challenges, and opportunities of curriculum reform during the transition period toward a unified national curriculum. Method. The study employs a qualitative literature review approach. Data were collected through a systematic search of Scopus-indexed journal articles, policy reports, and academic proceedings published between 2013 and 2025. Thematic content analysis was applied to identify key patterns in curriculum design, teaching strategies, assessment systems, and governance of implementation. Findings. The review reveals that K-13 emphasized standardized competencies and authentic assessments but was often perceived as rigid and administratively burdensome for teachers. Conversely, the Merdeka Curriculum highlights flexibility, teacher autonomy, project-based learning (Projek Penguatan Profil Pelajar Pancasila/P5), and formative assessment practices. While this shift aligns with 21st-century learning demands, challenges remain in terms of teacher readiness, infrastructure gaps, and unequal institutional support across regions. Implications. The study underscores that the success of the Merdeka Curriculum is strongly dependent on teacher quality, school leadership, and sustained policy support. It recommends capacity-building programs for educators, structured monitoring mechanisms, and longitudinal evaluations to ensure equitable and effective implementation. This research contributes to the broader discourse on curriculum reform in developing countries by providing a comprehensive synthesis of Indonesia’s experience.

Abstract

Vocational education in Indonesia faces various challenges in preparing competent and adaptive human resources for the 21st century. Despite various initiatives to improve the quality and relevance of vocational education, educational institutions still struggle with a less dynamic curriculum, limited infrastructure, and lack of collaboration with industry. As a result, vocational education graduates are often unprepared for the fast-changing and highly-skilled world of work. This challenge calls for a comprehensive reform of the vocational education system, involving the integration of 21st century skills such as adaptability, collaboration, critical thinking and digital literacy into the curriculum. It is also necessary to encourage strong partnerships between educational institutions and the industrial world to create a curriculum that is relevant and in line with labour market needs. In addition, the application of modern technology in the learning process, comprehensive training for teaching staff, and the development of high-quality vocational centres need to be prioritised. With consistent and coordinated reforms, vocational education in Indonesia is expected to be able to act as the main pillar in supporting the availability of competent and qualified human resources, and be able to compete at the global level. This will require close collaboration between government, industry and educational institutions to address the 21st century skills challenges and contribute to the nation's economic and social development.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze technology-driven teacher professionalism by systematically reviewing digital skills and educator sustainability in the post-pandemic era. The rapid advancement of educational technology and the acceleration of digital learning have transformed teachers’ professional roles, requiring educators to possess not only pedagogical competence but also strong digital literacy, technological adaptability, and resilience in technology-enhanced learning environments. This study employs a qualitative approach using the library research method by reviewing scholarly articles, academic books, and institutional reports published between 2020 and 2025. The data were analyzed using descriptive-analytical and thematic analysis techniques to identify trends, challenges, and conceptual developments related to teacher professionalism in the digital era. The findings reveal that digital competence significantly influences teachers’ ability to implement innovative and student-centered learning. Technologies such as learning management systems, artificial intelligence, and online collaboration tools enhance instructional effectiveness and professional connectivity. However, the study also identifies major challenges, including technological inequality, workload intensification, digital fatigue, and declining educator well-being. The findings further demonstrate that sustainable teacher professionalism requires balancing technological innovation with emotional resilience, institutional support, and continuous professional development. This study contributes theoretically by integrating Digital Competence Theory, Teacher Professionalism Theory, and Educator Sustainability Theory into a comprehensive framework. In practice, the study provides recommendations for policymakers and educational institutions to strengthen digital training, technological infrastructure, and teacher well-being programs to support sustainable educational transformation in the digital age.
