Abstract

Culinary tourism plays a vital role in the contemporary tourism industry by showcasing cultural identity through local cuisine. This study develops a bilingual video script (Indonesian–English) to promote Rumah Makan Pindang Kurnia in Palembang, a restaurant famous for authentic pindang dishes. The aim was to design an informative and persuasive promotional tool that enhances visibility of traditional food and supports the preservation of Palembang’s culinary heritage. The research applied a qualitative Research and Development (R&D) model adapted from Plomp (1997). Data collection, conducted from May to August 2025, involved literature review, observation, and interviews with the restaurant owner. The study followed several stages: initial investigation, script design, draft writing, expert validation, revision, and finalization. Validation was carried out by specialists in Indonesian and English scriptwriting, focusing on narrative clarity, linguistic accuracy, and promotional impact. The final product is a bilingual script structured according to Jakacaping’s rhetorical framework—hook, introduction, body, and closing. The script emphasizes the uniqueness of Pindang Kurnia’s recipes, its family legacy, the Ogan Komering Ulu flavor, and dining experiences enriched with traditional vegetables and sambal. Expert feedback confirmed that persuasive language and storytelling strategies effectively increased the script’s appeal for digital promotion. In conclusion, this research demonstrates the potential of bilingual promotional scripts to strengthen digital marketing of local cuisine. By integrating rhetorical strategies, cultural values, and social media platforms, culinary businesses can expand their reach and attract broader audiences. The findings provide practical insights for culinary tourism development and contribute to the promotion of Indonesian culinary heritage.

Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of learning Language Etiquette in English for Professional Purposes courses in higher education. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected through semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and students’ reflective journals from vocational college students. The findings indicate that Language Etiquette learning enhances students’ confidence, politeness, and ability to communicate appropriately in multicultural professional contexts. Role-play, case studies, and simulation activities were perceived as particularly effective; although some students struggled to apply etiquette principles in spontaneous or formal interactions. The study concludes that integrating Language Etiquette into English instruction strengthens students’ pragmatic and intercultural competence and recommends the use of more contextualized and interactive learning activities to improve practical application.   Keywords: Language etiquette, students’ perceptions, intercultural communication, qualitative study, professional English   DOI: https://zenodo.org/records/18084645

Abstract

This study investigated the patterns and rhetorical quality of figurative language in novice EFL writers’ descriptive texts about real culinary objects using quantitative corpus-based design supported by qualitative rhetorical evaluation. To generate the dataset, 42 first-semester learners in Narrative & Descriptive Writing course produced forty-two 500-word descriptions, forming a small corpus. The texts were manually coded using an instrument covering five figurative categories namely simile, metaphor, personification, hyperbole, and onomatopoeia. Two raters identified and classified all items to ensure reliability, guided by an analytic rubric assessing Contextual Appropriateness, Stylistic Effectiveness, and Creativity Response. The corpus contained 680 expressions, comprising 265 similes, 143 metaphors, 116 personifications, 101 hyperboles, and 55 instances of onomatopoeia. Simile dominated but demonstrated reliance on explicit comparative markers, whereas metaphor exhibited limited conceptual mapping. Personification contributed the strongest stylistic value, while hyperbole often led to overstatement and onomatopoeia appeared sparsely as isolated sound cues. Despite high figurative density, overall rhetorical effectiveness remained moderate, with creativity identified as the weakest dimension. The findings indicate that learners’ figurative use is active yet formulaic. Pedagogically, the study highlights the need for explicit instruction, corpus-informed modelling, and guided revision to support more intentional and stylistically effective descriptive writing.

Abstract

This community service program focused on the development of a promotional video script to introduce Gelam Forest Fantasy, a tourist destination located in Pangkalan Benteng Village, Banyuasin Regency, South Sumatra. The initiative was grounded in the limited use of digital promotion for this man-made nature-based attraction, which has resulted in suboptimal visibility and appeal. The study employed a Research and Development (R&D) approach comprising several stages, including observation of tourism potential, interviews with site managers, literature review, script drafting, expert validation, revision, and finalization. Expert validation results indicated that the developed video script was categorized as highly feasible in terms of linguistic quality, narrative coherence, promotional appeal, and the integration of local cultural values through narrative, descriptive, and persuasive approaches. The final product is a ready-to-use video script designed for digital promotion across various social media platforms. This activity contributes to enhancing the destination’s visibility while simultaneously supporting local community empowerment within the creative economic sector. Therefore, community-based video script development can be considered an effective, sustainable, and digitally relevant strategy for village tourism promotion.
