Abstract

In this research, a descriptive qualitative design was employed to delve into the perspectives of reading teachers concerning the cultivation of students' critical thinking skills. Through in-depth interviews, the research aimed to unravel the specific methods and instructional techniques these teachers utilized to nurture critical thinking in their students. The research emphasized an open-ended interview process, allowing for a nuanced exploration of the strategies employed by experienced teachers, with a focus on those possessing over 10 years of teaching expertise. The findings revealed that reading teachers, according to the constructivist principles outlined by Brooks and Brooks (2005), acted as facilitators, empowering students to independently construct their understanding of content. The constructivist approach emphasized autonomy, hands-on experiences, and cognitive language use in assignments. Teachers adapted lessons based on student responses, encouraged dialogue, inquired about students' understandings before presenting their own, and fostered experiences that challenged initial hypotheses. Despite challenges posed by standardized testing and ingrained educational approaches, constructivist principles proved effective in cultivating critical thinking skills. The research contributed valuable insights into the complex dynamics of critical thinking in reading instruction, advocating for student-centric and constructivist approaches in education. Keywords: Reading teachers’ perspective: students, critical thinking

Abstract

Abstract

Background: Gizi memiliki peran penting dalam mencegah kenaikan kasus stunting yang menjadi permasalahan internasional termasuk Indonesia.

Abstract

Project-Based Learning (PjBL) and Problem-Based Learning (PBL) have emerged as the leading teaching methods of this century. Thus, this study investigates the students preferences and experiences with PjBL and PBL in the development of writing skills at an Islamic university in Indonesia. Utilizing the qualitative analysis framework proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994), this research provides an in-depth examination of the students experiences, preferences, and the pedagogical efficacy of these two approaches. The data were collected through semi-structured interviews with the students who participated in writing courses that incorporated both PjBL and PBL strategies, allowing for a comprehensive comparison of their impacts on writing skills. The findings reveal that PjBL was particularly effective in enhancing the students writing abilities by nurturing sustained engagement, enabling thorough content exploration, and supporting iterative refinement through extended project work that integrates research, critical thinking, and feedback. In contrast, PBL proved valuable in promoting critical thinking and concise writing by utilizing structured problem-solving tasks. Overall, the study contributes to the discourse on effective writing instruction in higher education by suggesting that, while PjBL offered a more comprehensive framework for writing development, PBL served as a practical complementary method. The combined use of these strategies could, therefore, provide a balanced framework for enhancing the students academic writing proficiency.

Abstract

Background: Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) are the most frequently seen mesenchymal neoplasm in the digestive system. GISTs was originally described as smooth muscle tumor in the 1980s but advances in molecular diagnostic methods and immunohistochemistry moved GISTs into a different category from smooth muscle tumors. The study aims to report on epidemiological, clinical, immunochemical, and therapeutic characteristics of GISTs. Methods: We performed a retrospective descriptive study of 28 cases of GIST in the gastroenterology and general surgery departments of M. Djamil General Hospital Padang, Indonesia was conducted from January 2019 to December 2021. Data collection using medical records of patients in M. Djamil General Hospital Padang, Indonesia. We reported different data: Age, sex, symptoms, site, and immunohistochemistry of the tumor.  Results: Our study included 28 patients 18 males (64,3%) and 10 females (35.7%), with a median age range of 51-60 years. The presenting symptoms were abdominal mass (53.6%), abdominal pain (14.3%), bloody or dark-colored stools (14.3%), constipation (7.1%), fatigue (7.1%), and nausea and vomiting in 1 case (3.6%). Sixteen patients (57.1%) had a primary tumor and twelve patients (42.9%) had further metastatic lesions. The tumors were found in the stomach (21.4%), small intestine (14.3%), rectum (14.3%), and in other sites such as the retroperitoneal, liver, and distal pancreas. The immunohistochemical study was performed in seven cases (expression of  CD117 and DOG1), in four cases  CD117 was positive, while in three cases CD117 was negative. In two cases, the expression of DOG1 was positive, while in one case, it was negative. Eighteen patients with GIST (64.3%) underwent surgical procedures. A combination of surgical and chemotherapy was prescribed in 9 patients (32.1%). The chemotherapy regimen prescribed is imatinib. One patient is inoperable and has received symptomatic treatment. Conclusion : In conclusion, our result showed that GISTs are highest in the male population with an age range of 51-60 years. The most common symptom of GISTs is abdominal mass. Patients who have been diagnosed with GIST by histopathological examination do not always show positive expression in the immunohistochemical study. Surgical resection was indicated in the majority of patients, and a combination of surgery and chemotherapy is also prescribed as a treatment for patients with GIST.
