Abstract

This study aims to analyze the learning difficulties experienced by fifth-grade students of SDN 007 Pangkalan Baru in mathematics, specifically in multiplication and division operations. This research employed a qualitative approach with a descriptive phenomenological method. The research subjects consisted of the classroom teacher and fifth-grade students of SDN 007 Pangkalan Baru. Data were collected through tests, observations, and interviews, and were analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s interactive analysis model, which includes data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing with verification. The results showed that students encountered learning difficulties in three main aspects: (1) difficulty in understanding concepts, (2) difficulty in understanding principles, and (3) difficulty in computational skills. The factors causing these difficulties were both internal and external. Internal factors included low learning motivation, lack of self-confidence, and weak memory of calculation procedures, while external factors included conventional teaching methods and insufficient family learning support. Based on the findings, it is suggested that teachers implement contextual learning strategies, utilize concrete media, and provide gradual practice to help students better understand the concepts of multiplication and division.

Abstract

The present study explores the role of problem-solving learning models integrated with Mentimeter media in empowering higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) and creativity in social sciences learning at the elementary school level. A quasi-experimental, non-equivalent control-group design was used, involving two classes purposively selected. A total of 70 students were enrolled, 34 in the experimental class and 36 in the control class. Data were collected using essay tests that measured students' HOTS and creativity, then analysed using MANOVA after meeting the assumptions of normality and homogeneity. The results yielded a significant difference between the experimental class, taught using the problem-solving model with Mentimeter integration, and the control class, taught using the conventional teaching model, both in HOTS (p < 0.001) and in creativity (p < 0.001). These findings confirm the importance of combining problem-solving pedagogy with interactive technology tools in empowering elementary school students' cognitive and creative skills in social sciences learning.

The result showed that the teacher has a strategy to motivate students’ learning activities like explaining goal achievement, increasing their interest, making a good atmosphere in the teaching and learning process, applying an attractive method, giving appreciation for the success, and providing additional scores during the learning process. The obstacles came from the students who were still lazy to study, made noise in the classroom and did not listen to the teacher, the students who were afraid to express opinions, not all students who preferred the learning method applied by the teacher, and the students who were lazy to write and did not want to follow the rules due to some differences of students’ character.
