Abstract

Abstract: Assessment in critical thinking (CT) is essential to be implemented particularly in the English Language Teaching (ELT) classrooms; it can help teachers recognize their students’ English proficiency as well as CT skill level since both of them are interconnected. However, this assessment of CT is not well achieved in most language schools in Indonesia including at the university level since CT is not an independent subject, it is only linked to the main subjects existing in Indonesian curriculum. Therefore, this current study tries to investigate (1) teachers’ perspective on assessing their students’ CT (2) strategies that the teachers use to assess their students’ CT, and how those strategies are implemented. In depth interviews were conducted with two lectures of the English education Department. The findings show that (RQ1) the teachers realize that it is very important to assess students’ CT during teaching-learning process mainly in ELT context even tough CT is not aimed as the main objectives of the course, (RQ 2) teachers use questions and answers, instructions and directions, group discussion and pair assessment strategies to assess their students’ CT through giving questions and instructions to gain their students’ ideas which are implemented in the beginning, main, and closing activities relating to the topic discussed. In addition, they also conduct group discussion to help students actively involved in sharing their ideas, peer assessment is also utilised. In this case, teachers use their own creativity to assess their students’ CT. They relate the assessments given to assess students’ CT based on the goal and objectives of the course, and what should be achieved in that course. From this study, language teachers are suggested to encourage university students by creating classroom activities that lead to developing students' critical thinking based on the goal or objectives of the course, and what should be achieved in that course. In addition, further research is expected to expand this scope by involving more participants in a variety of contexts and fields to achieve more insightful knowledge and experience.    Keywords—Critical Thinking, Assessment, Assessment of Critical Thinking Abstrak: Penilaian berpikir kritis sangat penting untuk diterapkan khususnya di kelas pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris, hal tersebut diklaim dapat membantu guru mengenali kemampuan Bahasa Inggris siswa dan keterampilan berfikir kritis karena keduanya saling berhubungan.

Abstract

Writing academically and reading are parts of literacy that it is embedded in higher education. Therefore, it is important to assess how students’ ability can develop critical thinking regarding specific issues using hedging language. The purpose of this study was to evaluate students' critical thinking skills by looking at how effectively they hedgingly constructed their writings. Moreover, this study also explored the students' viewpoints about the use of hedging in their academic pursuits. This research employed a qualitative approach. The data was collected from students’ essays from the English Department in Surabaya and the results of a semi-structured interview with three students. Hyland (1998) identified eight categories of hedging, which were used in the text analysis. The study's findings demonstrate that students employed the majority of hedging strategies when writing their essays. However, the most used is modal auxiliaries, which focus more on the specific subject being taught and utilize a variety of tools to communicate their ideas. Moreover, it is found that different students provided varied reasons for employing hedging, such as reducing criticism, avoiding precision methods, or maintaining a particular writing style. Overall, the research underscores the multifaceted role of hedging in shaping both the content and perception of students' academic essays.

Abstract

Many women continue to face cases of sexual abuse in biological relationships between husband and wife, sometimes known as marital rape. This phenomenon is often considered taboo to be discussed, conveyed, and addressed. So in turn, the phenomenon of marital rape becomes a problem that cannot be resolved immediately. In particular, the main question in this research is how Islamic law views the phenomenon of marital rape in husband-and-wife relations and whether the urgency of sexual consent from the mubadalah perspective is a step to prevent marital rape. This research is included in the category of library research with a qualitative approach, data collection techniques with documentation types, data processing techniques with descriptive-analytic methods, and an analytical framework with mubādalah theory. The results of this study show that the act of marital rape due to unequal sexual relations between husband and wife is part of an act of violence, both physically and psychologically. Islam prohibits sexual intercourse through coercion and violence. Husband-wife relationships in any condition must have an element of pleasure from each party, meaning that there should be no coercion from both. Thus, sexual consent education needs to be pursued to become a preventive spirit and safe behaviour for instilling a foundation of mutual respect between individuals. This is expected to pave the way for married couples to enjoy a healthy and happy relationship for both parties.masih banyak dialami oleh perempuan.

Abstract

This study examines the reasons for students’ silence and the beliefs of students and lecturer about silence in EFL classrooms at Indonesian universities. It explores the perspectives of both students and lecturers on this issue. The participants are three students who are currently assigning as students at the second semester of undergraduate program at one of Indonesian universities and the students’ lecture. The study used semi-structured interviews to collect the data. The study found that students' lack of confidence in speaking English was a major factor contributing to their silence in the EFL classrooms. Some expressed fear of making mistakes or being judged by their peers, which hindered their willingness to participate in class discussions. Additionally, foreign language anxiety was identified as another significant factor, with students feeling overwhelmed and anxious about speaking in a language that is not their first language. Furthermore, the use of silence as a form of politeness was also observed, as students believed that interrupting or speaking out of turn was disrespectful. These factors not only affected students' individual participation but also had an impact on the overall classroom dynamics and communication. The study highlights the importance of addressing these challenges in EFL teaching and suggests strategies such as creating a supportive and non-judgmental classroom environment, incorporating activities that promote confidence-building and oral communication skills, and providing opportunities for students to practice English in a safe and encouraging setting. Overall, the study underscores the significance of understanding the role of silence in communication and its implications for effective EFL teaching in Indonesian universities.

Abstract

In the digital era, the use of digital learning media is increasingly popular among educators. The use of this media makes the trend of research on the use of digital learning media is increasing, including the use of Augmented reality which facilitates learning to be more real. This study aims to present data on the significance of bibliometric trends on Augmented reality as a learning media in elementary schools. The research method uses bibliometric analysis. Data analysis was carried out with the help of the VOSviewer application and biblioshiny with a total of 195 pieces of literature processed from the Scopus database from 2006-2024. The research results show that there was a significant increase in 2017 with 8 publications to a peak in 2020 with 24 publications but there was a decline again in 2021 with 15 publications. In 2021, the research discussion on this trend has decreased due to the fact that learning is no longer carried out by distance learning. Indonesia has contributed to this research although it is not dominant. Indonesia is one of the countries that has contributed research publications on this topic. China is the country with the most research citations. However, Indonesia should be more productive in writing on this topic, in order to make this trend increase.

Abstract

Critical thinking is one of the skills that need to be mastered in the 21st century. CTS especially in prospective elementary school teacher students, need to be developed because as an educator, teachers must face all the problems encountered in the learning process. This study aims (1) to determine whether there is a difference in CTS among students before and after receiving treatment (2) to identify the categories of differences in CTS among students after receiving treatment and its impact on their pro-environmental attitudes. This study is a pre-experimental research using a one group pretest posttest design. Students of the Elementary Education Study Program at Ahmad Dahlan University were given treatment through PBL by conducting an experiment on the use of banana peel waste as a substitute for carbon powder in batteries. A pretest was given before the students received treatment and the lecturer conducted the learning by presenting environmental problems, followed by a posttest. Data were analyzed using SPSS version 24 software to determine differences based on the Hake factor or N-gain. Additionally, the researcher analyzed the data using a paired t-test to assess the effectiveness of the PBL model. Based on the results of the study conducted using the N-Gain test, the average value obtained was 0.7239. This indicates that students experienced a significant improvement in learning outcomes, categorized as high (g 0.7). Furthermore, based on the results of observations and interviews, there was a significant impact after students participated in learning with treatment on the material of energy sources affecting the environment. Students demonstrated a positive attitude toward the environment, as evidenced by their sensitivity and openness to contributing to environmental conservation. Based on the gain values obtained, it can be concluded that the PBL model influences students' CTS and supports a positive attitude toward the environment
