Abstract

Self-efficacy is one of the essential things that students need to have, especially in academic performance. Self-efficacy has several sources, one of which is verbal persuasion in the form of verbal encouragement. Verbal encouragement can increase individual beliefs about their ability to complete tasks. This experimental study aims to determine the effect of verbal encouragement on self-efficacy.  The design used is a between-participant post-test only and conducted online. The sample of this study was 80 students of the Faculty of Psychology, Padjadjaran University, Bandung. The sample was randomly divided into two groups: The experimental group with verbal encouragement and the control group without intervention. Measurement of self-efficacy using two measuring instruments, General Self-efficacy Scale, which measures self-efficacy in general, and New General Self-efficacy Scale to measure self-efficacy more specifically, namely according to the research context. Data analysis using SPSS 26 and the results obtained based on the independent t-test showed that there was a significant effect of providing verbal encouragement on the level of self-efficacy of participants at p-value=0.0015 and p-value=0.000. This shows that giving verbal encouragement can increase the self-efficacy of participants who take tests, especially the Basic Indonesian Sign Language Quiz (BISINDO).

Abstract

Background: Anti Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor (anti-VEGF) and dexamethasone implant (DEX) are suggested as the first and second-line therapy for Diabetic Macular Edema (DME). However, persistent DME were found after six months of routine anti-VEGF injection. Intravitreal steroids have the advantage to control the inflammatory component of DME. Combining intravitreal anti-VEGF and DEX may reduce macular edema more effectively and more quickly theoretically. Hence, we aim to review the efficacy of adding DEX to anti-VEGF in treating DME. Methods: Literatures were obtained using comprehensive searching on PubMed and Proquest using the keywords “Dexamethasone implant”, “anti-VEGF therapy”, and “Diabetic Macular Edema” including their synonyms between 2018 to 2023. Non-English studies, animal studies, review articles, case studies, and editorial letters were excluded. This result was presented following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) Guidelines. Results: A total of 3 studies with 265 eyes were included. All of the studies had Central Foveal Thickness (CFT) and Best Corrected Visual Acuity (BCVA) as the main outcomes. Improved CFT was seen in all of the studies (all p<0.05) with ∆CFT (200,40 μm in 6 months and 413 μm in 12 months). Most studies showed improved visual acuity after 8 months of injections which were shown by ∆BCVA (8,84 letters in 6 months and 21,6 letters in 12 months) and increased intraocular pressure as an adverse effect of steroids. Conclusion: Combination of DEX and anti-VEGF showed improvement in CFT and BCVA. Further studies are required due to the controversial intravitreal steroids’ ocular adverse effect.

Abstract

A minimal oil palm empty fruit bunch (OPEFB) usage encourages increased OPEFB utilization to prevent its loss of economic prospects. The xylose and arabinose constituents of OPEFB’s hemicellulose part can be utilized as raw materials for xylitol production. A high diabetes mellitus and periodontal disease prevalence in Indonesia makes xylitol a safe and helpful low-calorie sweetener alternative. This research explores the OPEFB molasses-supplemented media and compares Moniliella pollinis SP5 and other M. pollinis ethyl methanesulfonate (EMS) mutants in xylitol yields. It was found that M. pollinis SP5 accomplished 27% better performance in OPEFB+15%(v/v) molasses than in OPEFB from 0.48 g/g to 0.61 g/g. In addition, M4, M5, and M6 mutants from EMS mutagenesis generated more xylitol concentration in OPEFB + 15%(v/v) molasses compared to the SP5 strain. These findings provide in-sights into the potential of xylitol manufacture with OPEFB. For future research, it is recommended that xylitol production employing OPEFB be optimized.
