Abstract

Kanji is the most complicated subject in learning Japanese. One of the difficulties in forming kanji is the sub-character kanji. Sub-character kanji is a sorting or breaking of the pull contained in a kanji. Because of this difficulty, a learning model is needed in the learning process that can help improve students' ability to understand how sub-characters in each kanji are studied. students. The Open-Ended Learning model is a solution to solving the problem of learning sub-character kanji. The objectives of this study are: (1) to determine students' ability to master sub-character kanji before using the OEL/open-ended learning model, and (2) to determine students' ability to master sub-character kanji after using the OEL/open-ended learning model. (3) to determine the difference in students' mastery of sub-character kanji before and after using the open-ended learning model, (4) to determine students' difficulties in learning sub-character kanji. The type of this research is a mixed method, which combines quantitative and qualitative research types. The population and sample in this study were 33 semester students. The data analysis technique in this study uses a qualitative descriptive approach. The results of this study are that students' ability to master kanji sub-characters has increased, and students understand how a kanji can be formed into its smallest part. It is hoped that after this research, the open-ended learning model can be applied to other Japanese language courses.

This study aims to identify the types of yojijukugo, analyze their formation, and uncover the meanings contained within them. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed to observe and describe data from the lyrics of 11 original Sixfonia songs. The results of the study show that there are three patterns of yojijukugo formation, with the 2+2 pattern dominating with 41 data points. In addition, five main types of meaning were found: idiomatic meaning (24 data), denotative meaning (10 data), connotative meaning (6 data), figurative meaning (6 data), and referential meaning (1 data). This study also provides new insights into how yojijukugo is creatively utilized in modern song lyrics to convey concise, poetic, and profoundly meaningful messages. It is hoped that the findings of this research can serve as a reference for Japanese language learners and other researchers interested in morphological and semantic studies in the context of musical art.

Abstract

This study aims to examine the perceptions of Japanese Literature students at Pakuan University and Darma Persada University regarding the difficulties encountered in learning basic-level kanji. Kanji is a type of character originating from China that was introduced to Japan. It is also one of the subjects often considered a daunting and most challenging obstacle for Japanese language learners, particularly beginner students. The difficulties in learning kanji are generally caused by the students' background as users of the Roman alphabet (romaji), which poses challenges when studying kanji. This study employed a descriptive quantitative approach, with data collection techniques utilizing a Likert scale distributed via Google Forms to students from both universities. The research participants consisted of 31 students from the Japanese Literature Study Program at Pakuan University and 54 students from the Japanese Language and Culture Study Program at Darma Persada University who had completed the basic kanji course. The results indicated that students experienced primary difficulties in memorizing kanji forms and meanings, distinguishing between onyomi and kunyomi, and applying kanji within the context of jukugo (compound kanji). Furthermore, learning strategies, motivational factors, and the support of the kanji instructional materials used also influenced students' difficulties in learning kanji. These findings are expected to contribute to the development of more effective kanji learning strategies and serve as constructive input for educators in determining basic-level kanji learning models.
