Abstract

This research conducts a pragmatic analysis of the flouting of the Maxim of Quality in the episode “Millennial Has to be Joking with This Question!” from the Steve Harvey Talk Show on the YouTube channel Steve TV Show. Pragmatic research that flouts the Maxim of Quality in the context of talk shows with millennial audiences or participants remains relatively rare. Several previous studies analyse violations of maxims in popular and more formal talk shows. However, it is not the same as on the Steve Harvey talk show, which highlights humour from flouting maxims across generations. Flouting of maxims is common in many television shows, which can certainly affect communication dynamics. This research uses Paul Grice’s Cooperative Principle and Attardo’s humour theory in the context of talk shows across generations. This research identifies and examines the actions in which Steve Harvey deliberately flouts the Maxim of Quality through strategies such as hyperbole, metaphor, irony, sarcasm, and banter. The analysis shows that hyperbole is the most commonly used strategy, followed by metaphor, banter, irony, and sarcasm. These strategies particularly serve to create humour, deliver criticism, and foster a sense of connection with the audience or build solidarity, with humour being the most significant function for this research. Thus, this study highlights how flouting the maxim of quality serves as a strategy for critical humour and can reflect social values and generational differences. Findings from research on flouting the maxim of quality and humour strategies can be used by various groups who need a deeper understanding of how to deliver messages effectively to cross-generational audiences.

Abstract

This research explores how fighters in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) use language in their press conferences and media appearances, with a focus on the styles and purposes of their verbal exchanges. Using a qualitative approach, the study looks at transcripts from UFC events between 2010 and 2025, especially the words of well-known fighters such as Conor McGregor, Nate Diaz and other Fighters. The analysis is based on Labov’s (1972) framework for storytelling, which includes parts like the abstract, orientation, complicating action, evaluation, resolution, and coda, as well as Jakobson’s (1960) ideas about the different functions of language. The research identifies three main ways fighters use language: confrontational, which involves direct insults and threats; humorous, which includes sarcasm and irony; and performative, which is more about making a dramatic or showy statement. Out of 20 data of UFC trash talk, the analysis revealed that fighters strategically employ various language styles to construct their public personas, intimidate opponents, and engage audiences. Regarding language style classification, the data shows a relatively balanced distribution across narrative categories. Orientation, Complicating Action, and Evaluation were the most frequently used styles, each (20%) of the analyzed data, abstract and Coda each accounted for (15%), resolution appeared least frequently with only (10%). This research contributes to to sociolinguistics, particularly in understanding how language is strategically used in sports media discourse. It highlights how trash talk functions as a context-dependent communicative practice shaped by social norms, performance, and interactional goals

Abstract

This study analyzes the use of slang in the film Deadpool (2016) from a sociolinguistic perspective, focusing on how informal language portrays character identity and social meaning. The purpose of this study is to identify the different types of slang used by Wade Wilson (Deadpool) and examine how these slang functions sociolinguistically in the film's dialogue. A qualitative descriptive method is applied using the film and its official transcripts as the primary data sources. A total of nine slang expressions spoken by the main character were collected through documentation and note-taking techniques, selected based on the criteria of containing standard, community, taboo, fresh and creative, acronym, and borrowed slang elements relevant to sociolinguistic analysis. The data were validated through triangulation of theory to ensure accuracy in classification and interpretation. The results show that Deadpool often uses innovative and inappropriate expressions to convey comedy, sarcasm, and emotional intensity, thus reinforcing his rebellious and humorous persona. This study demonstrates that slang in audiovisual media functions as a sociolinguistic phenomenon, fostering character development and narrative engagement, and reflecting group identity and social dynamics. By providing insight into the relationship between informal language and sociocultural expressions in popular media, this study contributes to sociolinguistic studies and offers a reference for further research on sociolinguistics.

Abstract

The article explores the sociolinguistic aspects as part of the linguistic landscape analysis of the hotel names in Bandung City, Indonesia. The researchers limited the research data, focusing only on 4- and 5-star hotels. Employing Landry and Bourhis’s (1997) LLS theory, the paper analysed 61 names of 4-star hotels and 13 names of 5-star hotels in Bandung city, which were collected by the Botsol Crawler application. Observation, interviews, and a literature review were also conducted to obtain the data for a more comprehensive analysis. The research results show that English dominated the appearance of Hotel names, both monolingual, bilingual, and multilingual. The research results indicate that the information function found in the data mainly refers to the owner or management agency and the location of the hotels. Meanwhile, the symbolic functions mainly refer to symbols of preservation values of colonialism, Sundanese culture, and modernity. These findings appear to suggest that the regulation mandating the use of the Indonesian language or local language in public spaces is being violated. Recommendations and implications for the government and further research are also discussed.

Abstract

In contemporary digital media, news headlines function not only as informational summaries but also as strategic discourse units that shape readers’ interpretation and engagement. One prominent feature of such discourse is sarcasm, which enables implicit evaluation and critique through indirect linguistic expression. However, the role of recurrent phraseological patterns in constructing sarcastic meaning remains underexplored. Drawing on corpus linguistics, particularly the lexical bundle framework proposed by Douglas Biber, this study examines how recurring multi-word sequences contribute to sarcasm in digital news headlines. This research adopts a corpus-assisted discourse analysis approach, combining quantitative and qualitative methods. The dataset consists of 500 sarcastic headlines (250 from The Onion and 250 from HuffPost) obtained via Kaggle. The corpus was analyzed using AntConc to extract lexical bundles of three to five words based on frequency thresholds. The findings reveal that stance expressions constitute the dominant category (48%), followed by discourse organizers (30%) and referential expressions (22%), indicating that sarcasm is primarily constructed through evaluative language and implicit judgment. Comparative results show that The Onion employs more explicit and stylized sarcasm, while HuffPost demonstrates a more subtle and context-dependent use. This study concludes that lexical bundles function as key linguistic resources for encoding sarcasm and evaluative stance in digital discourse.

Abstract

The research explores conversational implicature in Sex Education Season 1, Episode 5, focusing on how implied meanings reflect cultural heritage and improve teen communication. Using qualitative descriptive methods and Levinson’s pragmatics framework, the study analyzes transcripts to identify 21 instances of conversational implicature: 12 (57%) generalized, understood without specific context, and 9 (43%) particularized, relying on background knowledge. The main functions found are economy of expression (48%), contextual adaptation (29%), and social appropriateness (24%). These implicatures help characters communicate efficiently, adapt to social settings, and maintain politeness or indirectness, highlighting the social and cultural dynamics of adolescence. The study shows that conversational implicature is a key linguistic tool in the series, portraying the complexities of adolescent interaction and cultural identity in modern media. This research illustrates how pragmatic language use in popular culture both mirrors and shapes social interaction and identity development among youth. Keywords: Conversational Implicature, Pragmatics, Types CI, Generalized CI, Particularized CI

Abstract

Communication is an important thing especially for humans to give information to each other, and humans use conversation to convey something with the tool language. Discourse analysis as part of linguistics is the study of how language is spoken or written. In this research, the researcher analyzes the language spoken by Maudy Ayunda and Jessie Choi from one of Maudy’s videos on YouTube. People should make a good sentence in a conversation to make it easier to understand others. In conversation there are two or more people that talk to each other, it is a good conversation when they reply to each other. Another thing that makes a good sentence is grammatical cohesion which is part of discourse analysis. Grammatical cohesion is the study of how a component of grammar in a sentence is according to the rules. Grammatical cohesion has four types, there are conjunction, reference, ellipsis, and substitution. The theory of grammatical cohesion that the researcher uses is from Halliday and Hasan (1976) with the qualitative descriptive method to explain more detail about each type of grammatical cohesion. From 30 pieces of data that the researcher found in the conversation, there are 14 personal references, 5 additive conjunctions, 4 demonstrative references, 3 causal conjunctions, 2 verbal substitutions, 1 comparative reference, and 1 temporal conjunction. The most frequent grammatical cohesion in Maudy Ayunda’s video is personal references.
