Abstract

Conceptual understanding is a fundamental skill that students must possess in mathematics learning. However, preliminary observations in the fifth-grade class at SDN Sukasirna indicated that students' understanding of 2D shapes—specifically regarding the area of these shapes—was low. This situation was evidenced by poor learning outcomes, with a class average score of 58 and no students meeting the Minimum Mastery Criteria (KKM). This lack of conceptual understanding was attributed to teacher-centered instruction and a lack of variety in the learning media used. This study aimed to describe the implementation of the PUBMATIKA (Mathematics Pop-Up Book) medium and to analyze the improvement in fifth-grade students' understanding of 2D shape concepts. The study employed the Classroom Action Research (CAR) method based on the Kemmis and McTaggart model, conducted over two cycles. The subjects were 10 fifth-grade students at SDN Sukasirna. Data collection techniques included tests, observations, interviews, and documentation. Data were analyzed using both quantitative and qualitative descriptive methods. The results showed that the implementation of the PUBMATIKA medium improved students' understanding of 2D shape concepts. The percentage of students achieving mastery increased from 30% in the pre-cycle stage to 50% in Cycle I, and further rose to 80% in Cycle II. Thus, the PUBMATIKA medium is effective for enhancing elementary students' understanding of 2D shape concepts, particularly regarding the area of such shapes.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to use the Synthetic Analytical Structural (SAS) approach to improve the early reading skills of second graders at SDN Sawahlega. The goal was to engage the kids in reading exercises, starting with the SAS method. This study, which was conducted across two cycles, falls under the category of classroom action research (CAR), in which the teacher serves as the researcher. The framework for the research was influenced by the model proposed by Kemmis and McTaggart. The participants of the study included 35 students from the second grade. To gather data, various methods such as tests, observation forms, and documentation were utilized. Descriptive statistical analysis was employed for data evaluation. The findings revealed that implementing the SAS approach, along with guidance and the use of letter cards, positively affected the early reading capabilities; in the initial assessment, 57% of students passed with an average score of 72. Following the first cycle, the average score rose to 79, yielding a 69% passing rate. By the second cycle, the average score had further risen to 85, yielding an 80% passing rate. These findings show that the SAS approach successfully improves second graders' early reading abilities at SDN Sawahlega.

Abstract

This research is motivated by the low understanding of basic mathematical concepts, particularly addition and subtraction, among lower-grade students, which is often caused by conventional learning methods and the lack of use of concrete media. The purpose of this study is to improve the understanding of addition and subtraction concepts in first-grade elementary school students through the use of the traditional congklak game. The type of research used is Classroom Action Research (CAR), implemented in two cycles using the Kemmis and McTaggart model. The research subjects involved 20 first-grade students of Lembursawah State Elementary School in the even semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. Data were collected through testing techniques, observations of teacher and student activities, and documentation. The indicator of success is determined if >80% of students achieve the Minimum Completion Criteria (KKM) of 70. The results of the study show a consistent improvement in the quality of learning and student learning outcomes. The average class score increased gradually from 65 in the Pre-Cycle, to 71 in Cycle I, and reached 76 in Cycle II. Students' classical learning achievement significantly increased from 25% (5 students) in the pre-cycle to 50% (10 students) in Cycle I, and then reached a peak of 85% (17 students) in Cycle II. This final result successfully exceeded the established classical success indicator target. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the use of traditional congklak card-based game media is effective in improving the understanding of addition and subtraction concepts in first-grade elementary school students.
