Abstract

This study aims to develop a learning media in the form of a dynamic number card game based on number sense as a media for learning mathematics for first graders. This study uses the research and development (RD) with ADDIE model. Data collection techniques were interviews, observation, and questionnaires. The quality of the dynamic number card game was obtained from the validity and practicality test. Expert validation was carried out to evaluate the quality of media and content. The practicality test was conducted one-to-one (3 students) and in small groups (6 students working in small groups). The results showed that the dynamic number card game received a high score of validity from the expert judgment. The students also had positive responses to the practicality of the dynamic number card game in guessing and ordering numbers. The findings indicate that the dynamic number card game has the potential to be used as a medium for learning number sense for first grade students.

Abstract

Abstract This community service project aims to train secondary school teachers at SMA Negeri 3 Mandau, Duri-Riau, to create electronic books (e-books) using Flipbook software. The objective is to equip teachers with the necessary skills to develop e-books as online and face-to-face instruction materials. These e-books allow students to access them anytime, anywhere, particularly during remote learning. The training program spanned two weeks and included training and mentoring sessions, with 30 participants in attendance. Flipbuilder and Kvisoft Flipbook Maker were utilized as flipbook maker applications. The training yielded positive results, demonstrating participants' proficiency in creating and designing e-books for online use. The future goal is to enhance these e-books further and publish them as teaching materials with an ISSN. Keywords: e-book, flipbook maker, English material, Senior high School

Abstract

Computational thinking (CT) becomes an emerging topic in mathematics education research. The gender issue has gained scholarly attention to be investigated among many factors affecting students' CT. Therefore, the present study seeks to explore the effect of gender on the fifth-grade students' CT skills. This study applied quantitative research using the comparative method. The subjects were 120 fifth-grade students in Pekanbaru, Riau, Indonesia. Data analysis used the parametric test to compare students’ CT skills in general and the non-parametric test to compare students' CT skills in four competencies, decomposition, algorithmic thinking, pattern recognition, and abstraction. The findings indicate that students have low CT skills and no significant differences in CT skills between male and female students in general. However, male students' pattern recognition is significantly higher than that of female students. This implies that policymakers need to consider CT as part of mathematics curriculum in primary schools.

It is aimed to discover the perspectives local wisdom in preventing the decreasing of fish biodiversity at Rangau river. The employed sampling technique was snowball technic sampling which involved 30 respondents. The primary data were obtained using observation and interview; the secondary data (documents). Data consist of community composition, livelihood, community participation in preserving the local wisdom, the synergy between the local wisdom and the policies of the local administration. The data were computed in percentage and were analyzed descriptively. The findings demonstrated that the local wisdom was compiled by the local community whose livelihood as fishermen. Abstract

The students at the university under investigation are required to successfully complete the TOEFL Prediction test in order to be eligible for graduation. This study was conducted to assess the perceptions of these students regarding the TOEFL Prediction test as one of the graduation requirements. The research employed a descriptive-quantitative methodology and involved 171 English Study Program students from three different academic batches. A questionnaire served as the primary instrument for data collection, with data analysis carried out using Microsoft Excel and SPSS statistics version 26. The results of the data analysis indicated that the mean scores for most items in the questionnaire were in the high range. Specifically, 25 out of the 29 questionnaire items obtained mean scores above 3.40, demonstrating that students' perceptions in this study leaned positively toward the TOEFL Prediction test policy. However, it's important to note that nearly half of the students recognized that the TOEFL Prediction test is not an easy test. Furthermore, there is room for improvement in terms of students' understanding of the type of TOEFL test provided by the language centre at the university and the benefits of the TOEFL certificate. These findings can provide valuable input for the university's policymakers and administrators. They can use this information to design new initiatives and strategies aimed at assisting students in improving their test-taking skills and their understanding of the TOEFL Prediction test's structure. Such efforts can contribute to enhancing students' overall readiness for this requirement.

Abstract

This classroom action research aims to investigate the improvement of students' listening skills using the BBC Learning English website. The participants of this research were the eleventh grade of an integrated Islamic high school in Pekanbaru in the academic year 2023/2024. The participants were selected purposively, that is XI IPA class consists of 27 students. An observation checklist and field notes were used to collect qualitative data. Meanwhile, the quantitative data were collected by conducting the listening test and the percentage of students’ observations. The data was analyzed using Microsoft Excel to calculate the average score, percentage of students’ achievements in listening tests, and percentage scores of students’ observations. This study found that the students’ average score in Cycle 1 (87.5%) was higher than the students’ average score in the baseline data (12.5%). Based on the observation, the students were enthusiastic during the teaching and learning process. This means that BBC Learning English has proven to be effective in improving students’ listening scores. These findings suggest that BBC Learning English is a recommended website to be used by English teachers for teaching English at senior high schools because BBC Learning English is a beneficial learning medium for increasing students’ motivation to learn English, especially in motivating students to improve their listening skills.
