Abstract

To address sustainability challenges caused by climate change, it is essential to foster environmental awareness among children in coastal areas from an early age. The aim of this study was to examine the implications of play space characteristics on school-age children's affinity for nature, or biophilia, through a case study of Belakang Padang Island in the hinterland area of Batam City, Riau Islands, Indonesia. A descriptive qualitative approach was employed, utilising data collection methods such as mental mapping, participatory observation, and interviews. The findings indicated that the play spaces on the island exhibit both spatial and non-spatial characteristics and can be categorised into three main zones: land, transition, and sea. Children’s love for nature is reflected in their preference for play locations, sensory enjoyment of natural elements, a desire to explore nature, and curiosity about the natural world. Strategic and accessible play spaces allow for active interaction with natural elements, while types of play and social interactions strengthen children’s emotional attachment to the environment.

Abstract

Considering the needs of children as users is essential when creating Child-Friendly Integrated Public Spaces (RPTRA). Hence, this study sought to explore how the psychology of architecture focused on user psychology and behavior can contribute to the creation of RPTRAs. This research at Dataran Engku Putri, Batam City, utilised qualitative descriptive methods involving literature study and observation techniques. The results revealed that this public space was less adequate in meeting the RPTRA criteria including security and safety, recreational function and comfort, ease of accessibility, park attractiveness, health, meeting social needs, and learning elements. Therefore, it is necessary to improve and develop specialised play facilities for children based on the five aspects of psychology of architecture, namely space, size and shape, furniture and its arrangement, colour and texture, sound, temperature, and lighting.

Abstract

Early childhood represents a golden phase of human development, characterized by rapid growth across physical and motor, cognitive, language, social, and moral domains. While research on the influence of physical and non-physical environments on child development continues to expand, limited attention has been given to the systematic application of behavioral architecture in early childhood education settings that potentially support early childhood development. This study addresses this gap by examining the implementation of behavioral architecture principles at Christian Kalam Kudus 2 Kindergarten in Batam City, Indonesia. Using a qualitative approach that combined literature review, field observation, and semi-structured interviews. The study points out the implementation of five key elements of behavioral architecture that contribute to developmental outcomes. Spatial function and furniture (including their arrangement) emerged as the most influential factors, whereas spatial size and form, colour, and environmental conditions (sound, temperature, and lighting) provided partial contributions. Several design shortcomings were also identified, notably thermal discomfort and insufficient artificial lighting. Overall, the study emphasizes that kindergartens are not merely functional spaces but active agents in shaping behavior, learning processes, and development of young children through behavioral architecture that responds to user needs and environmental conditions.

Abstract

The rapid development of cluster housing in Batam City is generally dominated by standard design typologies which have mass produced by developers. The aim of the mass produced is for construction efficiency. Design evaluation is often limited to facade aspects, neglecting the internal spatial configuration underlying social interaction and occupant privacy. This study aims to analyze the spatial configuration and privacy hierarchy of four standard house type in Agung Permai Residence, those are type 40, type 48, type 78 and type 108. A quantitative descriptive method was used through a space syntax approach by extracting floor plans into Justified Permeability Graphs (JPG) and also mathematical calculations focused on Mean Depth (MD) and Integration Value (i). The result indicates that an increase building area in single-story dwellings (type 40 to type 48) does not alter the shallow centralized graph structure pattern, resulting in high vulnerability to visual intrusion in private areas. On the contrary, a fundamental improvement in privacy hierarchy quality is only achieved in two-story dwellings (type 78 and type 108), where the vertical circulation element, be inform of stairs, successfully acts as a spatial filter creating a deep graph structure. These theoretical findings recommend a reorientation of circulation design in small type housing to secure family domestic boundaries.

Abstract

To create a successful temporary public space that can sustain in dealing with the contemporary changes, particularly during this pandemic era which is full of uncertainty, the degree of people’s attachment to that place should be maintained. It is simply because the more the public space is needed, the more users will use the space, and a sense of belonging will grow to help maintain its sustainability afterward. The temporality aspect of time, nevertheless, can affect the growth of a person’s place attachment. Using Husserl’s phenomenological analysis of noema and noesis, this qualitative study intends to understand the place attachment development in one of the notorious temporary public spaces in Indonesia, a Ramadan street market, particularly in Batam. Direct observation and semi-structured interviews were conducted to collect the data regarding the theoretical framework of place attachment obtained from the literature review. This study reveals that, through the noematic synthesis, the external dimensions (physical characteristic) most likely lead to functional attachment or place dependence. Whilst through the noetic synthesis, the psychological attachment or place identity of the temporary public space can be influenced by the internal dimensions of place attachment (social intercourse, social cohesion, and social symbol).
