Abstract

The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic causes lower physical activity while exercise intensity also decreases. At the same time, the stress level is increasing, causing low physical fitness level. Due to the importance of human health and company cost to increase their employees’ physical fitness level, and with regard to the limited time of office employees, this research aimed to analyze the effect of tele-exercise duration on the fitness level of obese employees. The design of this study was pre-posttest quasi-experimental design. The subjects of this research were male and female obese employees, aged 18-45 years old, from Fast Moving Consumer Goods (FMCG) company in Jakarta, Indonesia. Subjects then were randomly assigned to a 30-minutes exercise session group (n = 20) or 60-minutes exercise session group (n = 19). Statistical analysis included paired t-test and independent t-test to analyze differences between groups. All aspects of fitness analyzed in this study (strength, flexibility, and cardiorespiratory endurance) were increased in both groups significantly (p<0.05). It was shown that 60-minutes exercise sessions improve overall aspects of fitness better than 30-minutes exercise sessions, except for cardiovascular fitness (VO2 Max). Using an independent t-test, there were no significant differences between 30-minute and 60-minute exercise sessions in terms of mean changes (p>0.05). This study showed that tele-exercise, even if it is done in a short period, 30-minute duration, may improve the overall aspect of fitness level significantly for obese employees. Moreover, in this pandemic time, this kind of program is a better alternative than face-to-face, direct exercise intervention.

Abstract

Female adolescents are at risk of iron deficiency which is known can negatively affect fitness. High-iron rice has been developed through biofortification but there is still lack of evidence regarding its benefit in improving VO2max as a physical fitness indicator. This study aimed to determine impact of high-iron rice intervention towards VO2max value. A total of 18 female students from Al-Falak Bogor Islamic boarding school aged 12-18 years were selected purposively in this quasi-experimental study. High-iron rice contained 50.4 ppm iron provided thrice daily for 4 weeks. A 20 m shuttle run test was conducted to obtain VO2max value. Other data such as food intake, BMI for age, hemoglobin, and serum ferritin were also evaluated. Paired t-test or Wilcoxon Ranks test was performed to analyze difference in data value before and after the intervention. Most nutrient intakes experienced a significant decline (p<0.05) after the intervention, except for iron intake. Hemoglobin concentration also became lower significantly, whereas serum ferritin did not alter significantly. Nevertheless, VO2max improved significantly after the intervention. To summarize, there was an increase in fitness after high-iron rice intervention for 4 weeks in female students.

Abstract

Background: Clean and healthy life behavior that is not appropriately implemented will cause various infectious diseases that trigger anemia. Islamic boarding schools have a significant role in instilling clean and healthy life behavior in students. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the relationship between pure and healthy life behavior with hemoglobin and serum ferritin. Hemoglobin and serum ferritin are indicators for diagnosing iron deficiency anemia. Methods: The research design was a cross-sectional study conducted in January – February 2021 at the Al Falak Islamic Boarding School in Bogor. A total of 45 subjects were selected with inclusion criteria, namely students aged 12-20 years, in good health, and being in the dormitory during the study period, while the exclusion criteria were not being in the dormitory for more than two weeks. Anaemia data status was obtained by measuring hemoglobin and serum ferritin levels. Analysis of hemoglobin (Hb) levels used the Cyanmethemoglobin method, while the analysis of ferritin levels in serum samples used the Chemiluminescent Microparticle Immunoassay (CMIA) way. Analysis of the correlation between the dependent variable, namely hemoglobin and serum ferritin, and the independent variable, namely clean and healthy living behavior. Results: Based on the hemoglobin value, 37.8% of the subjects had anemia, while based on the serum ferritin value, as much as 51.1% of the subjects had low iron status. Behavior related to personal hygiene, conduct related to washing hands, and behavior associated with the cleanliness of the subject's residence was classified as good, respectively, at 55.6%, 57.8%, and 44.4%. There was a correlation between personal hygiene-related behavior with hemoglobin (p= 0.042) (r=0.305) and serum ferritin (p= 0.036) (r=0.313). Conclusions: Personal hygiene was related to hemoglobin and ferritin serum in adolescent girls due to maintaining a clean and healthy life in Islamic boarding schools, primarily associated with personal hygiene.

Abstract

Pregnancy outcomes are affected by many factors: nutrition and physical activity. This study aims to determine the relationship between physical activity and nutritional adequacy level of pregnant women in the third trimester with pregnancy outcomes, namely maternal fasting blood glucose levels, blood pressure and amniotic fluid volume, and baby's birth weight and length. An observational study on a cohort was conducted on 34 pregnant women in their third trimester and followed until delivery in the Ciampea sub-district, Bogor, Indonesia. The data were processed through descriptive analysis for each variable. Bivariate tests between the predictor and outcome variables were performed using Pearson's correlation and Multiple Regression at 95% CI. Based on multiple regression analysis, we found that the samples' fasting blood glucose in the third trimester was predicted to be 36,9% positively affected by pre-pregnancy body mass index (b= 2,521; p= 0,009) and total physical activity during the third trimester (b= 0,055; p= 0,006). In conclusion, the nutritional adequacy level of macronutrients in the third trimester has not yet significantly affected pregnancy outcomes in this study. It is suggested that pregnant women should avoid prolonged sedentary activity and increase appropriate exercise to achieve maternal health and improve birth outcomes.

Abstract

Background: Telang flower (Clitoria ternatea L.) is a plant with a high antioxidant content that can be used as a functional drink in tea. That can be fermented to produce Kombucha, which is rich in antioxidants and organic acids. Objectives: This study aimed to develop a formula for Telang flower kombucha and evaluate its organoleptic properties. Methods:  In a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) experiment, this research was conducted at the Food Processing Laboratory of the Bachelor of Nutrition Study Program, Faculty of Medicine and Health, Universitas Muhammadiyah Jakarta, from December to March 2023. Sugar was added to the fermentation process at varied concentrations (20%, 30%, and 40% w/v), while Telang flower tea was the control. Fifty-two untrained panellists participated in the hedonic quality evaluation, which included the evaluation of color, aroma, taste, and overall preference. The data were examined with the Kruskal-Wallis and Mann-Whitney tests. Results: The sensory evaluation demonstrated statistically significant (p=0,000) differences in color, aroma, and taste between the control and the three sugar-added treatments. Kombucha's color and aroma characteristics with 20% and 30% sugar additions were significantly different (p<0,05). However, the taste characteristics were not significantly different. The color of Kombucha with 20% and 40% sugar additions were not significantly different, nor was the aroma with 30% and 40% sugar additions. According to the hedonic test analysis results, panellists preferred adding 40% sugar over other treatments. Hence this formula was selected for this study. Conclusion: Telang flower kombucha's organoleptic properties are strongly influenced by the fermentation process and the amount of added sugar. Further research is needed to explore its bioactive compounds and health benefits.

Abstract

The fat intake of pregnant mothers, especially palmitic acid, which is one of the main components of palm oil, may affect the weight and fat mass of newborns. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between maternal palmitic acid intake and palmitic acid levels in maternal and cord blood with birth weight and infant fat mass. This study uses secondary data using a cross-sectional design, which is part of the main study of the BSEA and IPB University. The research was conducted from May to October 2018 at the Tanah Sareal Health Center and North Bogor Health Center. A total of 142 pregnant women were selected based on a single pregnancy and Hb level of >9 mg/dL. Exclusion criteria were the presence of congenital abnormalities or undergoing therapy for a particular disease. Data analysis was performed using the Pearson/Spearman correlation test. The results of the study showed no association between maternal palmitic acid intake and birth weight or infant fat mass (p> 0,05). Two approximate significant indicators were palmitic acid level in maternal blood with birth weight (p= 0,089), as well as palmitic acid level in cord blood with infant fat mass (p= 0,053). In conclusion, maternal palmitic acid intake and palmitic acid levels in maternal and cord blood did not affect birth weight or infant fat mass.
