Abstract

This study aims to examine the use of the inflectional affixes -es and -ed in the narrative text "The Enchanted Fish" and their implications for English language teaching. Employing a descriptive qualitative research method through content analysis, the study identifies the patterns of -es and -ed suffixes attached to verbs in the narrative text. The analysis reveals that the -es suffix represents verbs in the third-person singular form in the present tense, while the -ed suffix represents verbs in the past tense within the narrative. The findings suggest that the use of various tenses in narrative texts enhances storytelling depth and richness, aiding students in understanding contrasts between ongoing events, habitual actions or permanent states, and past occurrences. In this context, the analysis of -es and -ed inflectional affixes on verbs in narrative texts can serve as a resource for teaching students about word formation, which can then be expanded into sentence construction. Furthermore, mastering this grammatical aspect can simultaneously support students' competence in reading and writing narrative texts

Abstract

This study aims to reveal the syntactic complexity of noun phrases in the narrative text "The Enchanted Fish" and its impact on the readability of the text. The research method used is content analysis with a qualitative descriptive approach. Data were taken from the text "The Enchanted Fish", an adaptation of a classic folk tale by the Brothers Grimm, and is an English teaching material for high school students in Indonesia. The analysis focused on the identification and categorization of simple and complex noun phrases in the text and how their syntactic structure affects the readability and comprehension of the text. The results showed that 63% of the noun phrases in the text were complex noun phrases, while the remaining 37% were simple noun phrases. Complex noun phrases tend to increase the difficulty level of the text, which can make it difficult for students to read and understand the contents of this narrative text. This is due to the presence of modifiers or layers of detail that explain the core part of the noun (head) in the phrase, thereby increasing the reader's cognitive load. This syntactic complexity requires students to process additional information contained in the modifiers, which often slows down reading speed and reduces overall comprehension of the text. This directly affects the readability of the text by increasing the level of difficulty and potential cognitive fatigue. These findings provide important implications for language teaching strategies, namely underlining the importance of syntactic analysis of noun phrases in order to (1) select appropriate teaching materials/texts, (2) provide structured teaching of noun phrases, and (3) provide constructive feedback in order to help students who have difficulty reading complex texts, especially in the aspect of noun phrases. Keywords: noun phrases, narrative text, text readability

Abstract

This study explores the request strategies of Javanese female English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners and how these reflect their politeness in communication. It examines the influence of Javanese cultural values and gender on their choice of strategies. Using Trosborg's (1994) request categorization and Brown and Levinson's (1987) politeness theory, data were collected through role-play and semi-structured interviews. The analysis identifies that the learners mainly use conventionally indirect strategies, particularly hearer-oriented ones, with negative politeness being the most common approach. These strategies emphasize indirect phrasing and respect for the listener's autonomy. Javanese cultural values, such as humility (andhap asor) and empathy (tepa selira), significantly shape these choices. Gender norms also play a role, encouraging politeness and indirectness to reduce imposition and promote harmony. The findings suggest that integrating cultural awareness and contextually appropriate strategies into English teaching can help learners communicate effectively in formal or professional settings

Abstract

Conducting research may contribute positively to teachers’ professionalism and maintain their Career-Long Professional Learning (CLPL). However, many teachers find it challenging and hesitant to conduct research. In this regard, this descriptive quantitative study compares novice and experienced teachers’ motivational factors affecting their decision to conduct research despite their other responsibilities as teachers. This study involved 127 English language teachers who are also active researchers. The data were obtained by using an online survey adopting the Teacher Research Motivation Scale (TRMS) proposed by Hosseini & Bahrami (2022) consisting of 22 items. Descriptive statistics and Mann U-Whitney test were then performed using SPSS software to identify the differences between novice and experienced teachers in their research motivation. The results mostly highlight the importance of comprehensively understanding in-service teachers’ motivational factors to conduct research and foster their willingness to be actively involved in research projects. Government and other educational practitioners may reflect on this study’s result to encourage teachers to conduct research and maintain their professionalism in teaching.

Abstract

In today’s digitally connected world, developing pragmatic competence is essential for English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners. This competence encompasses both pragmalinguistic and sociopragmatic abilities, which are critical for using language appropriately across diverse contexts. This study explores how EFL learners informally develop pragmatic competence through digital and AI-assisted learning outside formal classroom settings. Using a qualitative descriptive approach, data were collected from 20 purposively selected Indonesian EFL learners through questionnaires and interviews. The study investigates three dimensions: learners’ pragmatic awareness and practices, types of speech acts acquired informally, and the digital tools they employ. Findings reveal that learners show a notable awareness of context-sensitive and polite language use, which is often shaped by repeated exposure to digital content. Commonly acquired speech acts include polite requests, expressions of gratitude, and compliments—frequently encountered in online media. In contrast, more complex acts such as refusals and complaints were less frequently acquired, suggesting limited exposure and the need for deeper sociopragmatic engagement. Learners demonstrated proactive engagement with digital platforms, highlighting the mediating role of technology in informal pragmatic development. Tools such as ChatGPT were valued for their dialogic simulation and personalized feedback, while Grammarly assisted with tone adjustment in written communication. Although digital tools enhance pragmatic awareness, their effectiveness in fostering sociocultural sensitivity appears limited without reflective guidance. This study underscores the need for pedagogical scaffolding to complement informal, AI-assisted learning environments.

Abstract

This study examined how Javanese male EFL learners employed indirectness and politeness strategies when making requests in formal contexts. It drew on the frameworks of Searle (1975), Trosborg (1994), and Brown and Levinson (1987) to explore how learners manage face-threatening acts (FTAs) using pragmalinguistic devices. The analysis focused on head acts (core requests) and external modifications. Using a qualitative case study design, four male university students from Central Java, Indonesia, were involved as participants. Data were collected through role-play tasks and interviews and analyzed using Miles and Huberman’s (2014) model. The findings showed that the learners preferred conventionally indirect strategies (56.25%), often employing politeness markers and expressions of ability to mitigate the FTAs and respect the hearer’s autonomy. Direct strategies (43.75%) were less common and primarily occurred in urgent situations but were mitigated with politeness markers. External modifications, particularly supportive reasons, appeared in 81.25% of cases, highlighting a strong orientation towards respecting the hearer’s autonomy, or ‘negative face’. This pattern reflects sensitivity to formal contexts, supporting Brown and Levinson’s claim that politeness strategies support smoother interactions in such settings. These results challenge the stereotype that male speakers tend to be more direct. Instead, the participants prioritized indirectness and external modifications, influenced by contextual factors and cultural values such as 'andhap asor' (humility) and 'tepa selira' (empathy), which promote social harmony and minimize confrontation. This study highlights the roles of culture, gender, and context in shaping politeness strategies.

Abstract

This study examines the short story "The Enchanted Fish," adapted from the fairy tale "The Fisherman and His Wife" by the Brothers Grimm, as additional reading material for high school students. The story contains important moral lessons and uses many connotative signs (words, phrases, and sentences) to convey these messages to its readers, who are English language learners still improving their reading skills. This poses a challenge for students to understand the moral lessons and hidden information in the story. The goal of this study is to reveal the moral values and hidden information in the story using Roland Barthes' semic code theory. The research method used is descriptive qualitative. Data were collected through reading and note-taking. The data analysis follows the interactive model proposed by Miles and Huberman (1994). As a result of the study, it was found that the short story "The Enchanted Fish" uses connotations to convey deep moral messages about greed and avarice and their negative consequences. This analysis also evidences the complexity of the narrative text, which requires reading skills, especially in examining implicit messages and information. The results of this analysis can also serve as a useful reference for teachers in teaching narrative texts and helping students become more critical in reading and understanding stories. Thus, this study contributes to a better understanding of how narrative texts can be used to teach moral and ethical values.

Abstract

Mentoring is a way of professional development for educators, teachers, and school leaders. This study aims to discover how mentors conceptualized the value of their practice and its impact on their growth and identity while guiding mentees in teacher-research mentoring activities. This study presents a case study of 4 English educators as mentors to gather a rich depiction of their mentoring phases. Understanding the mentors' pedagogy could help in understanding more about the process of their competence-building. Moreover, this process influences the process of their learning and impacts their identity. The data were obtained through critical self-reflection journals, mentoring conversations, and online focus group interviews. A model based on Mezirow's critical self-reflection practice is used to recognize mentors' growth and identity development. It suggested that three broad mentoring categories exist: self-focused, mentee-focused, and relationship-focused, which support them in achieving mentoring expertise. Moreover, mentors' motive is influenced by the identity development that occurs in the sociocultural environment, demonstrating their values, beliefs, and perspectives. This study's results also suggest that the mentoring program can be the basis for training, deploying expertise and competencies, and boosting personal and professional growth.
