Abstract

Mathematics education needs to be taught meaningfully using problem contexts and facilitating reasoning, modeling, collaboration, and connection with other mathematical concepts. This community service project aimed to train primary school teachers in developing Realistic Mathematics Education (RME) 'icebergs' utilizing the local cultural context of Magetan. Twelve primary school teachers in Magetan participated in the RME training, which focused on developing the RME 'icebergs' through exploratory and contextual approaches. The research method included face-to-face sessions, group discussions, and individual tasks to design relevant learning materials. The training results showed significant improvement in the understanding and application of RME. Before the training, teachers faced challenges in engaging students in grades 4-6 and in using local context in mathematics teaching. Post-training, 67% of the teachers demonstrated a positive change in their teaching approach, shifting from lecture and drill methods to an RME-based approach. Additionally, 50% of the participants successfully developed RME icebergs that integrated problems within the local cultural context of Magetan. The training evaluation indicated that over 50% of participants responded positively, showing increased knowledge about realistic mathematics and the application of culturally contextualized problems. The conclusion of this study asserts that the RME approach, especially when combined with local cultural context, is effective in enhancing mathematics teaching skills and enriching numeracy literacy among primary school teachers. The implications of this research suggest integrating RME into the primary school mathematics curriculum to develop critical thinking, creativity, and collaboration skills in students, in line with the demands of the 21st century.

Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process and results of the development of STEM-Surrounding-Nature-Exploration (SNE) integrated with PjBL-based learning materials to improve students' creative thinking skills on sets concepts This is developmental research using the Plomp model to develop learning materials in the form of Teaching Modules and Project Worksheets for set materials with a STEM-SNE integrated project learning design. The trial was conducted on 31 grade 7 students at a junior high school in Surabaya, East Java. Data collection and analysis techniques were carried out using validation sheets to determine the validity of the learning materials tested on the validator. A pre-test and a post-test were used to measure effectiveness related to students' creative thinking on set material. In addition, student response sheets were also used to determine the practicality of the learning materials. Results found that the learning device obtained a validity criterion of 92.5% for the Project Worksheet while 91.25% for the validity of the Teaching Module and each was classified as very valid. For effectiveness criteria, it was obtained n-gain of 0.7512 in the limited trial and 0.71 in the class trial and each of them obtained high effectiveness criteria. Learning materials obtain very practical criteria implemented with an average student response acquisition of 85% and 84% for project learning designs.

Abstract

This study aims to describe the process and results of the development of PjBL-based learning media integrated with STEM to improve students' critical thinking skills on the material of counting operations of whole numbers and fractions. This research is a development research with Plomp development model to develop learning tools in the form of Teaching Modules and Project Worksheets on arithmetic operations of whole numbers and fractions with STEM integrated project learning design. The instruments of this research are project worksheets, teaching modules, student response sheets, and pre-test and post-test sheets. Data collection techniques used questionnaires (validation sheets and student responses) and tests. Data analysis was conducted by testing the validity, practicality, and effectiveness of learning devices. The results showed that the learning devices obtained validity criteria of 87.9% for the Project Worksheet while 84.375% for the validity of the Teaching Module and each was classified as very valid. For the effectiveness criteria, the N-gain was 0.7512 in the limited trial and 0.7091 in the class trial and each obtained high effectiveness criteria. The learning tools obtained practical criteria for implementation with an average student response of 79.3% and 80.45% for project learning design. Thus, the learning tools are declared valid, effective, and practical to use.
