Abstract

English holds great significance in Indonesia, particularly within Islamic boarding schools (Pesantren). Despite its introduction in primary schools, surveys reveal that the majority of graduates face common communication issues, such as inadequate speaking abilities and a dearth of interaction skills. Communicating in English for a second language speaker is a difficult task due to a variety of reasons associated with the fear of speaking English, such as language anxiety, restricted vocabulary, and a lack of exposure to the language, as argued by the researcher. This paper aims to offer an elaboration of vlog portfolio as a technique in teaching and assessing speaking in Islamic boarding schools. A vlog portfolio can be an alternate strategy for students in promoting their progress of speaking performance

Abstract

Since English is used frequently in everyday life, exposure to it is essential in non-formal education. Using storytelling techniques and incorporating English as local content can help create a new learning environment and combat boredom that stems from formal school fatigue. This study investigated how English storytelling can enhance speaking ability and foster a positive attitude toward learning English among non-formal school students. The research involved 52 students at Madrasah Diniyah, an Islamic non-formal school in Central Java utilizing test, questionnaire, and parent interviews. The research findings showed that the English Storytelling Technique can increase students' motivation to learn in non-formal schools and also improve their speaking ability. This is evidenced by the significant improvement in students' speaking ability, increasing from the initial level of 55% to 87% at the final level. The student's parents believe that because the Islamic non-formal school offers English language instruction, their children are more encouraged to learn the language. Therefore, the study suggests that the exposure of English learning should be given more and intensively to non-formal school in the future learning.

Abstract

The importance of meaning in communication is significant, and they can be classified into two categories: Verbal and non-verbal. Various circumstances, the dynamic between speakers, and social elements all have a role. The four language abilities of language acquisition reading, writing, listening, and speaking do not occur in isolation in communicative texts or activities, hence pragmatics in English language learning is crucial. For the language student, developing good pragmatic competence should be taken into account. The application of applied pragmatics in post-pandemic English language learning is discussed in this essay. English-speaking users, both native and non-native, should speak clear, understandable and educated English, as this facilitates communication and reduces the risk of misunderstandings in social situations. In international communication, English has been crucial. In order to successfully achieve their communicative objectives in cross-cultural communication, language users might benefit from pragmatic competence. Therefore, pragmatic aspects play a significant role in communication between speakers as they can prevent misunderstandings and errors during conversation. As a result, teachers should include pragmatic competency in English language classrooms through a variety of tasks and exercises.

Abstract

Madrasah Diniyah institutions often face persistent challenges in language instruction, including low student engagement and limited diversity in teaching methodologies. These issues can hinder both linguistic development and overall learner well-being. To address this concern, this study explores the integration of English storytelling as a pedagogical strategy to (1) promote students’ speaking skills and (2) promote their emotional and psychological well-being during the learning process. Employing a Classroom Action Research (CAR) design, the study was conducted over two instructional cycles involving 52 students from Madrasah Diniyah Kanzul Ulum. Data were collected through both quantitative and qualitative methods. Pre-tests and post-tests assessed improvements in speaking performance, focusing on fluency, vocabulary usage, and overall comprehension. Qualitative data were obtained through classroom observations, student questionnaires, and semi-structured interviews with parents to capture behavioral and emotional responses to the intervention. The findings indicate a significant improvement in students’ speaking abilities, with notable gains in verbal expression, confidence, and classroom engagement. Storytelling sessions fostered a dynamic and enjoyable learning environment, encouraging active participation and reducing student anxiety. Furthermore, students developed a stronger emotional connection to the material, which enhanced motivation and fostered a more positive attitude toward learning English. Parental feedback also revealed increased use of simple English expressions at home and greater enthusiasm for attending classes. These outcomes suggest that English storytelling not only supports language acquisition but also contributes to students’ holistic development. Accordingly, it presents a promising instructional approach for enhancing both linguistic proficiency and well-being in non-formal Islamic educational settings.

Abstract

The ability to write descriptive texts in English remains a challenge for many EFL learners, particularly at the secondary vocational level, where students often struggle with generating ideas, organizing content, and using accurate vocabulary. Visual media such as picture series can serve as effective learning aids by stimulating imagination, guiding idea development, and making writing tasks more engaging. This study explores students’ perceptions of using picture series to support descriptive text writing in an eleventh-grade vocational high school in Kudus, Indonesia. Employing a descriptive qualitative design, the study collected data through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews with 30 students. The findings reveal that the majority of students perceive picture series as helpful in clarifying the stages of writing, expanding vocabulary, and reducing difficulties in composing descriptive texts. Students also reported that picture series enhanced their motivation and made writing activities more enjoyable. However, some challenges were noted, including dependence on visual aids and limited opportunities to develop writing autonomy. Overall, the study concludes that picture series are perceived positively as an instructional medium, with potential to foster students’ writing skills when used strategically in classroom practice. The results suggest that EFL teachers should integrate picture-based tasks with guided writing activities to balance support and independence in learning.

Abstract

Swearing, often stigmatized as impolite, fulfills diverse pragmatic functions in everyday and mediated discourse. Despite increasing scholarly attention, limited research has examined how swearing is employed in cross-generational workplace comedies. This study investigates the lexical types and pragmatic functions of swear words in The Intern (2015). Adopting a qualitative descriptive approach, the study analyzed all utterances containing swearing in the film. Data were collected through repeated viewing, transcription, and verification with subtitles to ensure accuracy. The lexical classification followed Hughes’ (2006) typology, while functional analysis was guided by Andersson and Trudgill’s framework, adapted to the filmic context. Thirty-eight instances of swearing were identified across four lexical categories: religious terms (e.g., “oh my God”), sexual expressions (e.g., “ass,” “fucking”), animal references (e.g., “bitch”), and mental-state terms (e.g., “crazy,” “maniac”). These fulfilled four pragmatic functions: expletive (spontaneous emotion), abusive (other-directed offence), humorous (affiliative purposes), and auxiliary (intensification). Jules Ostin, the female protagonist, produced the highest frequency, with expletive swearing predominating. The findings demonstrate that swearing in The Intern is a versatile pragmatic resource that indexes stance, emotion, and relational alignment, rather than merely signaling impoliteness. The study extends understanding of cinematic discourse and highlights pedagogical implications for raising EFL learners’ sociolinguistic awareness of taboo language. Future research could examine genre and cross-cultural variation to illuminate the contextual shaping of swearing practices further.

Abstract

In higher education, critical thinking skills are essential for students to develop their ability to explore problems, questions, or situations, find a solution, and justify their positions. Such skills can be cultivated through sustained, authentic dialogue with peers or in groups. To provide a supportive environment for dialogue and interaction among students, a book club was utilized as an alternative and extension activity of Extensive Reading course within the English Education Study Program at a private university in Indonesia. The book club enables students to connect with others, expressing and exchanging ideas and thoughts, thereby sharpening their critical thinking skills. This mixed-method study investigated the students’ reading and critical thinking skills after participating in the book club, the effectiveness of book club in developing these skills, and the ways in which the book club fostered critical thinking skills. Twenty-three freshmen from one class participated in the study. The instruments used were a reading test, a survey of critical thinking skills, and students’ work. The reading test and critical thinking survey were administered sequentially after the treatment, while students’ work was qualitatively analyzed. The findings reveal that book club is effective in developing student’s critical thinking skills, particularly in terms of creating alternative t endings to a given story.
