Abstract

Conditions and facilities of English language classes in the remote area encourage the negotiation of learning to solve problems. This narrative research aims to reveal strategies of pre-service teachers of the SM3T program in the process of the negotiation of English language learning. The study used diaries and interview transcripts from four teachers from Pidie Jaya and Sumba. The findings showthat teachers use interpersonal (IPS) and instructional (IS) strategies in the negotiation process. In Pidie Jaya, IPS strategies consist of the use of local languages and the help of local people. Meanwhile, IS strategies comprise learning groups and introduction to learning activities. In Sumba, teachers make language adjustment and establish rapport and informal communication as IPS strategies and they carry out buddy teaching and assign homework as IS strategies. This study contributes to the intercultural approach to designing English Language Education programs for remote areas. Keywords: EFL, remote areas, negotiation of learning STRATEGI GURU PRAJABATAN DALAM NEGOSIASI PEMBELAJARAN BAHASA INGGRIS DI DAERAH TERPENCIL Abstrak Kondisi dan fasilitas kelas Bahasa Inggris di daerah terpencil mendorong adanya negosiasi pembelajaran untuk menyelesaikan masalah. Abstract

Beliefs take a vital role in influencing students' decision about integrating digital literacy in EFL classroom. This case study investigated students' behavioral, control, and normative beliefs toward integrating digital literacy into the EFL classroom. This research used the Theory of Planned Behavior initiated by Ajzen to collect and analyze the data. The results of interviews and observations highlighted students' integration of digital literacy into EFL classroom referred to several beliefs. The behavioral beliefs (attitude toward advantages of a behavior) about the value of digital literacy for its effectiveness and efficiency potential to find information, to promote students cognitive skills and ethical awareness, and to improve English proficiency; normative beliefs (about social support) about the meeting of the expectation of school, teachers, parents, and friends; and control beliefs (about perceive behavioral control) about the opportunity and the availability to interact with the technology. This study highlighted a substantive theory related to the findings: Students' positive beliefs about integrating digital literacy into EFL classroom influence students' learning strategy. By having positive beliefs about the outcomes that students will get (behavioral beliefs), support from family, teachers, and the school environment (normative beliefs), as well as beliefs about the presence of factors that may facilitate or hinder the performance (control beliefs), students demonstrate the tendency to always use digital technology in learning English.

Abstract

This study aims to learn about students' experiences developing their speaking skills using Online Informal Learning of English (OILE) activities. The researcher gathered data for this narrative study by interviewing and observing three English education students at a State University in Central Java. The data were then evaluated qualitatively. The results indicated that students learned several aspects of speaking and communicating in English using Youtube video content, including pronunciation, intonation, and expressiveness. Additionally, the students used a variety of social media and chat platforms to engage with their international peers in English. Additionally, students favoured this informal learning mechanism because they recognized the efficacy of these online everyday learning activities in pleasantly achieving meaningful learning goals. Additionally, OILE activities aided students' speaking performance during informal learning activities.

Abstract

The practice of learner-centered approach (LCA) in enhancing foreign language teaching-learning process has been broadly recognized. Little research, however, have disclosed how this approach works and promotes learners’ improved abilities. While learner-generated material (LGM) is a principle of and one of the activities in learner-centered approach, it is currently under studied, thus little researchers discuss how it applies in EFL context. This qualitative case study investigated the teacher’s belief and classroom practice of learner-generated material in a flipped speaking class. The participant of the study was a teacher in a vocational high school. The instruments were participant observation, semi-structured interview, and documentation. The analysis showed that the teacher’s belief was mostly consistent with her classroom practices, i.e. beliefs about learning objectives, teaching modeling, and procedure of learner-generated material, teaching resources, classroom management, teacher’s role, students’ role, and assessment. Nevertheless, there were little discrepancies, e.g. teachers’ beliefs about classroom procedure. The present study recommends that teachers, especially those new to LGM, follow the present findings in order to recognize the aspects within LGM in the umbrella of LCA and understand how these methods practices. The implication of the study is this research will give a contribution in Indonesian ELT context by providing a new perspective of learner-centered approach through technology.

Abstract

The present study employed a mixed-method approach to investigate creativity and speaking ability of EFL learners towards its relationship and other essential factors. Indonesian EFL students of the 5th semester taken the course of Academic Speaking in a private university (n=30) who were selected randomly responded Creative Personality Scale (CPS) and Self-Rating of Creativity. For the former, they described themselves by checking off 18 positively scored and 12 negatively scored items which were given a value of +1 and a value of -1, respectively. The latter was assessed by using eight items from the creativity scale. The 7-point Likert-type scales (1=strongly disagree, 7=strongly agree) were made to respond these items. Following this, the students' monologues based on five themes were scored using the IELTS Speaking Test Descriptor. The data were analyzed using Spearman rank-order correlation coefficient, pattern matching, and explanation building. The finding shows a significant correlation between EFL learners' creativity and their speaking ability (? = .961). The students also faced up to the cultural constraints in advancing their creativity. This study should, therefore, be of value to practitioners wishing to provide EFL students with appropriate materials that are addressed to enhance their speaking ability.

Abstract

Printed wedding invitations have been one of the most crucial aspects in the social organization among many countries like Brunei Darussalam, Iran, Egypt, and Persia. Javanese people also pay special attention to this social document as it represents social class, social status, prestige, and fnancial support allocated by the host. Evolution of printed Javanese wedding invitations represent social and economic pressures. The diasporic communities who were absent to earn a living brought a noticeable change by setting up the bride’s parents’ photographs in the invitations. 15 invitation texts were selected ranging from 1980 – 2017 used in Tawangmangu, Wonogiri and Sukoharjo, the eastern part of Central Java, Indonesia. There was a consistent regularity in terms of rhetorical structure. Functionally, the invitations have the same role of inviting prospective guests to share happiness in a more family-bound relationship. Inclusion of parents’ photographs, map of the location, pre-wedding photos, wise words, calendar, the profle of the couple were indicators of transformation taking place. Later, the printing decision of the invitations is pretty much customer-driven informed by the customers’ needs, values, and beliefs. Rhetorically the materialistically-driven social phenomenon was shown by an explicit gifts desired.

Abstract

The research focused on the representation of women in the news about the absence of women in Uber’s CEO candidates from the perspective of feminist stylistics by Sara Mills. Five news texts from five different websites published during August 2017 were analyzed; they were Washington Post, Daily Mail, Inverse, Gizmodo, and Fortune. The method used was a qualitative research method with the approach of critical discourse analysis of Sara Mills. By applying three levels of analysis which was analysis at the level of the word, phrase/sentence, and discourse, this research aimed to analyze how women were represented linguistically in the online news of Uber’s CEO candidates and to discover the reason why women were represented in the way they were. The findings reveal that women remain underrepresented in news media. It is proved by the dominance of women as the object in the stories. Moreover, women are represented as ‘glass cliff position’, minority, and a way to recreate the good image in the company. The gender stereotypes, the background story of Uber, the male-dominated industries, and the prevalent condition become the reasons why women represented that way.

Abstract

One of the impacts that can be observed on language differences during learning English is interference. Indonesian medical students have problem with writing; what they said did not reflect what they meant to. This descriptive analysis study identified the interference on medical students while doing writing activity in the class. Four students were chosen randomly as the subjects to give their written diagnosis. The analysis was done on basis of lexical interference after categorizing formal error on their writing. The result showed that error distributions were omissions, coinage, claque, misselection, borrowing, misordering and overinclusion, where the most prominent was omission. This problem may happen due to first language, language learning process and the English words themselves. The strategy of writing instruction can be started from vocabulary understanding to minimize writing errors.

Abstract

Abstract: YouTube resources have contributed significantly to the language learning especial- ly for multimodal literacies including listening and pronunciation. By using different kinds of mode, learners are exposed to more natural and received pronunciation of audiovisual texts in English. Minimal pairs, word transition, intonation, word stress combined with facial expres- sions, body language, eye contact, pose, pictures, photographs, musical instrument as back- grounding illustration have been a rich multimodal source to activate students’ awareness on how meaning-making efforts are not solely constructed verbally. In a more complex digitalized world, technology has provided a more natural setting of communication that students need to be aware of and make use to substitute the limited availability of native speakers especially in remote areas of extended Indonesian archipelago. Keywords: YouTube, multimodal literacies, minimal pairs, word transition, pose.
