Abstract

The use of taboo words is strongly influenced by culture. In the growing discourse of use of taboo words in social reality, men are often portrayed to have discourteous traits and utter any form of taboo words when compared to women. However, a movie entitled Death Proof does not show the same trend. The present research aimed at investigating taboo words in the mentioned movie by focusing on their types and motives. Through the utilization of observation and documentation techniques, the data comprised utterances of the main characters that contained taboo words. The results revealed that the main characters employed taboos of profanity, obscenity, vulgarity, epithet and insult. Pertaining to women, they also fulfill those various classifications. Conversely, insult and profanity were the typical types men uttered during the movie. In regard to the motives of using taboo words, it was discovered that psychological, social and linguistic motives tend to stimulate male characters to utter taboo words, while women are merely affected by psychological and social  motives. From the results, the research concludes that female characters utter taboo words more variably than men. However, women’s variability on the production of taboo words is limited to certain situations, while men apply taboo words in multiple contexts.

Abstract

The present article seeks to discuss the phonological process concerning the alterations in English sounds produced by Indonesian EFL students. This study drew on generative phonology and utilized Schane’s (1973) categories of the phonological process to highlight the changes in English sounds. This study applied a qualitative method with a descriptive research design. All data of this study were gathered through digitally recording eight EFL students’ oral presentations in the research proposal seminars. According to the results of this study, the transformations in the English sounds arose in both the consonant and vowel sounds of the English, where these changes attributed to the four categories of phonological process, including assimilation, dissimilation, deletion, and insertion. The present study also found the occurrences of a double and triple different phonological process in single word utterance produced by participants of this study. This study signified that such changes in English sounds occurred owing to the mother tongue influence. The results of this study offer a significant contribution to the insights into both linguistics and EFL instruction.

The results showed that Jimmy Fallon used 4 types of 5 types of illocutionary act in the seven The Tonight Show videos researched. The data found shows 31 sentences that are; 12 representative utterances, 11 expressive utterances, 7 directive utterances, and 1 commissive utterance. Meanwhile, the types of illocutionary act that is not found is declarative. Based on the results of the study, it could be concluded that the representative act is the most illocutionary act found in Jimmy Fallon's utterances. This study suggested to conduct a broader research on speech acts, not only in terms of illocutionary acts but also from other speech acts. This research contributed to influence how to interact, understand illocutionary acts in utterance, and build good social relationships with other people.

Abstract

This research addresses the limitations of pragmatic studies focusing on directive acts within the high-pressure context of modern military action movies. The study aims to investigate the types and situational aspects of the functions of directive acts used by main characters in The Expendables 4 (2023). Employing a qualitative descriptive method, the research integrates Searle's (1975), taxonomy directive acts with Leech's (1983) framework of situational aspects to analyze movie dialogue. Data collection involved watching the movie, transcribing relevant scenes, and classifying utterances based on Searle's (1975) and Leech's (1983). The findings revealed 30 directive utterances, categorized into five types: 15 commands, 6 warnings, 4 requests, 3 instructions, and 2 suggestions. Commands were the most dominant form of the data, which reflects the hierarchical and urgent nature of military operations where immediate compliance is critical. The study concludes that situational urgency and combat intensity have a direct impact on the linguistic realization of directive acts, favoring brevity and force over politeness, but cooperative directive acts like requests and suggestions still play a strategic role in team coordination.

Abstract

ABSTRACT Traditional wedding attire is an important part of cultural heritage that functions not only as an aesthetic element but also as a symbol reflecting the values, identity, and worldview of a society. In Gorontalo culture, wedding attire embodies philosophical values related to moral principles, social status, cultural identity, and religious teachings, as reflected in the philosophy “Adat bersendikan syara’, syara’ bersendikan Kitabullah.” However, modernization and globalization have influenced the use and interpretation of traditional attire, leading to shifts in values within contemporary wedding practices. This study aims to examine the philosophical values embedded in the traditional wedding attire of both the bride and groom in Gorontalo traditional marriage ceremonies. The research employs a qualitative descriptive method with a literature review approach. Data were collected from books, academic journals, cultural archives, and relevant documentation, and analyzed using qualitative content analysis to identify symbolic meanings in elements such as colors, ornaments, accessories, and structural designs. The findings indicate that Gorontalo traditional wedding attire represents values of dignity, purity, prosperity, leadership, harmony, responsibility, and social balance. The bride’s attire (Bili’u) symbolizes elegance, honor, and the role of women in family life, while the groom’s attire reflects leadership, protection, and readiness to assume household responsibilities. Therefore, traditional wedding attire serves not only as ceremonial clothing but also as a medium for preserving cultural values and transmitting philosophical meanings to future generations.

Abstract

This study investigates how friendship circles influence university students’ English language styles, focusing specifically on pronunciation adaptation and communication patterns. The research employed a descriptive qualitative design supported by quantitative data, involving 10 purposively selected students from an English Language Education Program in Indonesia. Data were collected using an online questionnaire consisting of multiple-choice and open-ended questions, then analyzed using three-step model: data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing. The findings reveal four key patterns of language variation shaped by peer interaction: (1) pronunciation adaptation, (2) communication style, (3) peer influence, and (4) slang and informal lexicon. Students exhibited partial pronunciation accommodation, often adopting certain native-like features while maintaining local accents to balance group belonging and identity. Communication patterns were dominated by casual, slang-filled interactions, with academic discourse used primarily in formal contexts. Peer groups emerged as linguistic communities, subtly shaping pronunciation, lexical choice, and register through daily interactions. These findings contribute to sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic discussions on language variation, highlighting how peer social environments function as powerful spaces of linguistic adaptation and identity negotiation among EFL students. The study also emphasizes that language adaptation within peer groups is not merely linguistic, but also a reflection of emotional bonding and shared values. Understanding this process helps illustrate how English learning becomes a social practice shaped by identity, community, and belonging.

Abstract

This study examined language-choice patterns, code-mixing, code-switching, and domain contraction within the multilingual ecology of Universitas Alkhairaat Palu, and considered their implications for Indonesian academic-language instruction. A qualitative ethnographic case study was conducted from February to July 2026 with 18 purposively selected participants (4 lecturers, 4 educational staff, and 10 students). Data were generated through participant observation, structured in-depth interviews, and institutional document analysis across academic, administrative, religious-ceremonial, and informal domains. Analysis combined iterative data reduction, domain-based coding, data display, conclusion drawing, and verification; credibility was supported through source, method, and theory triangulation and reflective field notes. Indonesian remained the principal academic and administrative language, while Arabic appeared systematically as a marker of religious authority and institutional identity. English was used mainly in informal peer interaction, whereas Kaili showed the narrowest functional distribution and was often limited to lexical fragments. These patterns indicate an unequal institutional language hierarchy rather than a measured longitudinal shift. A four-meeting Problem-Based Learning and directed-translanguaging prototype was derived from the findings as a preliminary pedagogical proposal; its effectiveness was not tested in this study.

Abstract

This study was conducted to explore and evaluate the language features of main character in the movie Cruella (2021) that are proposed to be the symptoms of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). The data included thirteen purposively selected dialogue excerpts from the movie, taking into account the frequency, intensity, and representativeness of NPD-related language features across various scenes and dialogues. The main instrument was the researcher, who was assisted by a dialogue transcription sheet and an NPD trait classification table, in accordance with the DSM-5 criteria and the Campbell & Miller's (2011) grandiose narcissism framework. Systematic observation, scene-by-scene transcription, and verification of the movie with the official subtitles were the methods used to collect data. The data were analysed psycholinguistically alongside Conversation Analysis (CA), which involved open, axial, and selective coding to reveal and classify common linguistic phenomena. The results indicated that every one of the nine DSM-5 categories of NPD traits was present to some extent in Cruella's remarks and that lack of empathy, need for admiration, and grandiosity were the most frequently and strongly expressed traits. These characteristics manifested at the linguistic level in the use of self-referential pronouns, lack of mitigation strategies, dominance in turn-taking, and the use of manipulative discourse techniques such as forced-choice questions and contrastive structures. The study concludes that language use in fictional characters could be a representational indicator of personality traits and that the combined methodology of psycholinguistics and CA proves to be a fruitful method of analysing the personality in cinematic discourse.
