Abstract

This article explains the historical and global contextualization of intolerance towards religious minority group such as Ahmadiyah and it analyzes the recent increased animosity towards them in Indonesia. This paper argues that to understand the current persecution of Ahmadiyah one must begin with an examination of the early transnational efforts to marginalize Ahmadiyah and their effects on Muslim Commnunities. The Meccan fatwas in focus and their reproduction –provide an example of the ways in which such globalized discourses of exclusion regarding a particular religious group were strategically framed and mobilized in i.e. Lahore, Mecca and few other places, and how these historical and theological factors at play could provide more insight into the rising political intolerance and the criminalization of religious views in Indonesia.

Abstract

AbstractThis qualitative study examines the emergence of sunnah schools and their influence on the development of educational institutions among urban Muslim communities in Indonesia. Three key aspects were explored: (1) the important figures and main actors in establishing sunnah schools, (2) the content and materials used and developed in these schools, and (3) the local community response to their establishment. The study was conducted in the Jakarta Greater Area (Jabodetabek) area, encompassing South Tangerang, Depok, and Bogor Regency. The findings reveal that while sunnah schools have similarities with public schools in general education, there are significant differences in religious education, particularly in the areas of tauhid, fiqh, and other religious sciences according to the Salafi manhaj. In addition to adopting the curriculum of the Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture, sunnah schools also use some special materials, including extracurricular activities such as horse riding and archery, which are considered part of the sunnah of the Prophet. The study concludes that the growth of sunnah schools is closely linked to the dynamics of educational institutions, changes in lifestyle trends, and the development of identity politics in urban Muslim communities in Indonesia.

Abstract

Abstract

This paper tries to analyse the millenarian response of the Bantenese to the Western colonization from an anthropological perspective. The history of Banten at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century was marked by various indigenous unrest, rebellion, and resistance against the colonial power. In 1888, several religious leaders of Sufi brotherhoods and community leaders in Cilegon, Banten led a revolt against the Dutch colonial government. This uprising was provoked by the Dutch’s trade regulation, a new economic system, and was fuelled by enduring religious sentiments against the Dutch. While most scholars frame the event as a religious or social political movement, this study focuses on to what some of the Bantenese Muslims perceived as “unjust” social situations of the colonized world: poverty, inequality, religious restriction, social and political marginalization.

Abstract

Broadly speaking, the book by Nicolas Jonathan Woly, derived from his doctoral dissertation, discusses the diverse opinions on interfaith relations from Islamic and Christian scholars and theologians in the 20th century. Woly does not seem to want to stop at such a typical discussion; rather, he also wants to specifically examine how such interreligious relationships influence the understanding of Christians and the church in their missiological tasks. Or, as he put it, "…The Church and Christians will listen and perhaps also learn from other religious communities in matters of its mission." In this regard, Woly explicitly states that Christians and the church should also receive input from their historical experiences of encountering people of other faiths.

Abstract

This paper tries to discuss the biblical texts and their interpretation in the Islamic tradition. It will essentially explore the specific relations be-tween the Qur’an, and the Bible, and how some Muslim scholars interpret the biblical texts in accordance with the Islamic doctrines. Even though the term “Islamization” of the Gospels has not been widely used in the Muslim scholarship, many Western scholars of Islam have referred to this as one of the major features of the Qur’anic discussion on Jesus and Christian tradition.
