Abstract

The well excavation or drainage process often results in casualties due to the presence of poison gas at the bottom of the well. Workplace accidents caused by toxic gases in mining locations also frequently loss of life. This research aims to create a smart safety helmet, a project helmet for personal protection equipped with an MQ-2 sensor to detect toxic gases, connected to a smartphone application using IoT (Internet of Things) technology. Data collection involves calibration tests and simulation tests. Data analysis employs descriptive statistical analysis in the form of numbers and tables. The creation of the smart safety helmet involves integrating Arduino devices with an MQ-2 sensor, LCD, buzzer, power bank, and IoT technology connected to the mobile phones of operators or project supervisors. This integration enables the helmet to detect and relay information about CO gas and its safety status. Based on the performance test results and calibration tests using Automotive Diagnostic Solutions owned by the Cilacap District Transportation Agency, the smart safety helmet has been proven effective in detecting the presence of carbon monoxide by being worn by mining workers and well diggers, thus detecting CO levels and its safety status. If the CO level reaches 1500 ppm or more, the operator or project manager can immediately prepare rescue measures.

Abstract

Sampang District is the only area in Cilacap Regency where citizens of Chinese descent are not allowed to have their own business to protect native traders from the monopoly of citizens of Chinese descent. The purpose of this study was to determine the trade protection model applied by Sampang residents in dealing with trade monopoly efforts from residents of Chinese descent. The research methodology used is the mix method. Collecting data by conducting surveys, observations, and interviews. The research location is Sampang District. Withdrawal of samples using purposive sampling method by interviewing people who know the trading system that applies in Sampang District. Analysis and processing of data using descriptive analysis. The results of the study show that the non-involvement of citizens of Chinese descent in the Sampang economy has been going on for a long time, namely when Sampang residents tried to protect their territory from the direct involvement of citizens of Chinese descent in economic activities. Sampang residents allow a business collaboration system between residents of Chinese descent and indigenous residents but using the names of indigenous people. With this strategy, the people of Sampang can develop the economy of the indigenous people without being dependent on people of Chinese descent.

Abstract

The teh-tehan plant or Acalypha siamensis is a plant species that is familiar as a living fence which is widely planted by rural communities. The aim of this study was to make bioherbicide from tea leaves and measure the effectiveness of Acalypha siamensis infusion as a bioherbicide against bandotan weed and its effect on rice (Oryza sativa L.). Data collection used experiments by routinely spraying Acalypha siamensis infusion on bandotan weed plants using mahogany leaves, ketapang leaves and synthetic herbicides as a comparison, then tested its effect on the growth of rice plants. Data analysis used a comparative descriptive analysis by comparing the growth of weed bandotan which was sprayed with Acalypha siamensis infusion with that which was sprayed with infusion of mahogany leaves, ketapang leaves and synthetic herbicides, then proceed with comparing the effect on the growth of rice plants. The production of bioherbicide from Acalypha siamensis is carried out by the infusion method, namely boiling in water until 1/3 (one third) of the original amount of water remains. Based on the experimental results, data was obtained that natural materials such as Acalypa siamensis leaves, mahogany leaves and ketapang leaves were proven to be able to suppress the growth of bandotan weed (Ageratum conyzoides). Based on the analysis of the BNT/LSD test, data were obtained that the ability level of Acalypha siamensis was the same as mahogany leaves and ketapang leaves but was safer for rice plant growth than mahogany leaves and ketapang leaves. Keywords: Acalypha siamensis, bandotan, bioherbicide, weed, infusion, rice

Abstract

This research was to find out patterns of speaking English activities among Indonesian learners of English. This is to find out their lacks, needs, and wants regarding out-of-class English activities to improve their speaking English proficiency when in an EFL (English as a Foreign Language) context like Indonesia. As many as 107 respondents of college students of English of 4 universities in Indonesia participated in this research by responding to closed and open items provided in questionnaires. After a deep descriptive qualitative analysis, results show that most respondents perceived that they lacks peaking skills amongst other English skills. They lack chances to speak the language. They wanted to have ample extramural activities to practice speaking English. They needed to be “forced” to venture to speak English when outside classroom. In conclusion, there is a discrepancy (lacks) between the ideal proficiency that they perceived and the current level of speaking skills. They need to be provided with learning policies to provide them with chances events or venues to practice speaking English. Extramural speaking activities need to be explored and then written into a school policy so that students will not only speak English when in class but also when outside classes. Participatory-yet-mandatory extramural English activities need to be promoted.

Abstract

Kaffir lime peel (Citrus hystrix) is often discarded after extracting its juice, turning it into waste that is not utilized. In fact, the antibacterial properties in kaffir lime peel are quite good. The purpose of this research is to determine the effectiveness of using kaffir lime peel as a natural preservative for fish compared to ice, betel leaves, kaffir lime leaves, lime leaves, sweet orange leaves, lime peel, and sweet orange peel. Data collection was done using sensory tests, TVB-N tests, and Aerobic ALT tests. Data analysis was carried out using comparative descriptive analysis, ANOVA tests, and BNT/LSD tests. The use of kaffir lime peel as a fish preservative involved cutting the lime peel into small pieces, drying, and grinding it into powder. The effectiveness of kaffir lime peel in preserving fish was significantly better than ice or other natural materials such as betel leaves, kaffir lime leaves, lime leaves, sweet orange leaves, lime peel, and sweet orange peel. ANOVA test analysis showed a p-value is less than 0.05, concluding that there is a significant effect of using kaffir lime peel as a fish preservative. Based on the BNT test analysis, there is a significant difference between the use of kaffir lime peel compared to ice and other natural preservatives. The effect of kaffir lime peel on maintaining fish texture was 41.12%, eye clarity was 72.79%, gill color was 13.83%, fish scale color was 66.76%, and odor (aroma) was 66.73%. The results of the TVB-N test showed a value of 232.58 mg per 100 grams, which was better than ice with a TVB-N value of 262 mg per 100 grams. Meanwhile, the microbiological results using the Aerobic ALT test showed a value of 4.021 log cfu per gram, much better than ice, which had an Aerobic ALT value of 4.146 log cfu per gram. Thus, the use of kaffir lime peel is the most effective in preserving fish compared to ice and other natural materials.
