Abstract

Addressing a gap in cross-cultural semantic studies of Indonesian global artists, this paper investigates the connotative meanings embedded in NIKI’s “Anaheim” lyrics. The study employs a descriptive qualitative research design to interpret the connotative meanings conveyed through linguistic choices in NIKI’s lyrics. The study employs document and content analysis of the song’s written text. Ten lyrical excerpts were systematically read, annotated, and coded to identify recurring lexical items, metaphors, and thematic patterns. The coding process, validated through peer discussion and reference triangulation, ensured interpretive reliability and analytical depth. Drawing on Leech’s semantic framework and supported by transnational identity theory, the analysis highlights how “Anaheim” constructs themes of loss, emotional transformation, and cultural hybridity. The findings reveal that NIKI’s nuanced use of connotative language transforms personal experience into a universal emotional narrative, illustrating how linguistic creativity serves as a medium of identity negotiation within the global pop music landscape

Abstract

This research aims to analyze the use of politeness strategies used by the main characters in the movie The Intern (2015) based on Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory (1987). This study applies a qualitative descriptive method, and the data are taken from the movie dialogues. The data analysis focuses on four types of politeness strategies, namely bald on-record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and off-record strategies. The findings show that all four strategies are used in the movie with different functions depending on the context and the relationship between the speakers. Bald on-record is mostly used in direct and urgent situations, positive politeness is used to build closeness and solidarity, negative politeness is applied to show respect in formal interactions, and off-record strategy is used to express meaning indirectly to avoid conflict. This study concludes that politeness strategies play an important role in creating effective communication in workplace interactions. This research is expected to contribute to the study of pragmatics, especially in understanding politeness strategies in professional communication.

Abstract

Conversational implicature, as defined by Grice (1975), denotes a speaker's intended meaning that is conveyed implicitly, rather than explicitly, and must be derived by the recipient. Speakers often utilize oblique language, humour, exaggeration, or selective information in podcast interviews. Rio Meets Cristiano Ronaldo audio verbal implicatures are the focus of this investigation. Grice's Cooperative Principle and the four conversational maxims of quality, quantity, relation, and manner are used to discover maxim breaches that cause implicatures. This study used qualitative descriptive methods. Data collection involved transcribing a 42-minute YouTube audio video, identifying statements with implicit meanings, and evaluating them with the pragmatic identification method established by Sudaryanto (2015). Nine utterances had conversational implicatures, with Maxims of Quality and Quantity breaches dominating. In interviews with public personalities, conversational implicature appears to be crucial to meaning creation, indirect expressing of opinions, and media discourse civility.
