Abstract

Background: Women of reproductive age are potentially to have double-burden malnutrition due to poor diet quality. Obesity-related anemia affects iron homeostasis (hypoferremia) through low-grade inflammation. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the differences of iron status among women of reproductive age based on obesity status and diet quality based on iron and obesity status. Methods: A cross-sectional study of female students, aged 18-22 years old that classified as obese (n=25) and non-obese (n=25). Subjects were selected by proportional random sampling. This study used iron status and diet quality as variable datas. Blood samples were taken to determined iron status (Fe serum). Diet quality was analyzed by SQ-FFQ and DQI-I. Statistical analysis using Independent-T Test, One-way ANOVA, Kruskal Wallis, Mann Whitney tests. Results: There were 20% of obese subjects had low iron status and majority (94%) had low diet quality score (52.04±5.2). Iron status of obese women (83.9±20.7 µg/dl) significantly differed to non-obese women (99.2±26.1 µg/dl), p=0.027. Obese group with low iron status had lower diet quality and moderation component score, however adequacy score was higher than other groups, p<0.05. There were no significant differences in variation and overall balance among all groups, p>0.05.Conclusions: Iron status of obese women was significantly different than non-obese women. Obese group with low iron status had lower diet quality and moderation component score, however adequacy score was higher than other groupsABSTRAKLatar Belakang: Wanita Usia Subur (WUS) rentan terkena masalah gizi ganda akibat kualitas diet yang buruk. Status besi WUS obesitas (83,9±20,7µg/dl) berbeda signifikan dibandingkan WUS non-obesitas (99,2±26,1µg/dl), p=0,027.

Abstract

Background: The prevalence of overweight and obesity in adolescents is significantly high. Overweight and obesity among Islamic students (referred to as santri in Indonesian) are caused by low diet quality, characterized by inappropriate food intake and low physical activity (energy expenditure). Behavior modification is needed to improve diet quality and body composition. Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the effects of a nutrition class on diet quality, body fat percentage, and waist circumference among female Islamic boarding school students. Methods: This quasi-experimental investigation employed a pre-post test group design with 34 subjects who met the inclusion criteria. The subjects consisted of 17 treatment and 17 control subjects. The treatment group participated in a santri nutrition class involving four nutrition education sessions and 12 aerobic exercise sessions in a month. Diet quality data were gathered using the Diet Quality Index-International (DQI-I) form. Body fat percentage was measured using bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA), and waist circumference was measured using Medline. Data were analyzed using the independent t-test, Mann-Whitney test, Wilcoxon test, and paired t-test. Results: Subjects with overweight and obesity exhibited low diet quality. Differences in diet quality changes, variation, and adequacy components were observed between the treatment and control groups (p-value=0.001, 0.029, 0.001, respectively). There was no significant differences in changes in body fat percentage and waist circumference between the two groups (p-value=0.487, 0.385, respectively). Conclusions: The santri nutritional class positively impacts diet quality, variation score, adequacy score, and waist circumference among overweight and obese female Islamic boarding school students.

Abstract

Background: Central obesity causes various diseases. Abdominal fat is associated with metabolic disturbances. Dietary interventions targeting abdominal fat are reported to have health benefits. A plant-based diet is known to be beneficial in reducing abdominal fat. Objectives: This study aims to see the effect of a flexitarian diet on abdominal fat through waist circumference and SAD. Methods: This research used a quasi-experimental design with a pre-post-test control group design. The research sample size was 21 obese female students aged 19-25 in Semarang. Subjects were selected using the consecutive sampling method and divided into treatment groups (11 subjects) and control groups (10 subjects). The four-week flexitarian diet treatment group included three main meals and two snacks, while the control group was not given any dietary intervention. However, both groups (all subjects) were given nutrition and obesity education through lectures and leaflets. Anthropometric data on body weight, waist circumference, and SAD were taken before and after the intervention. Statistical analysis was performed using paired t-test, independent T-test, Mann Whitney, and ANCOVA. Results: Intakes between groups during the intervention showed statistical energy, fat, and fibre differences. SAD between the treatment group (-1.2±0.6cm) and the control group (0.2±1.5cm) showed a significant difference (p=0.010). There was no significant difference in waist circumference between the groups, but the decrease in the treatment group was more significant (-6.6±5.5cm). Physical activity did not affect changes in SAD (p=0.210), while diet treatment affected changes in SAD (p=0.010). Conclusions: Changes in SAD showed a significant difference between groups after intervention. Changes in waist circumference were insignificant between groups, but the decrease was more significant in the treatment group.

Abstract

Background: High sugar consumption was found among children in Indonesia. Excessive intake of added sugars was predicted to cause micronutrient dilution, a negative potential effect compromising micronutrient intake such as iron and zinc. Objectives: This study examined the association between added sugar consumption and iron and zinc intake among children aged 24-59 months. Methods: This study was a secondary data analysis of the 2014 Total Diet Study in Central Java Province. The subjects were 394 children aged 24-59 months. Dietary intake and sociodemographic data were assessed using the 24-hour food recall and household questionnaire. Added sugars consumption was classified into six cut-offs based on its contribution to daily energy (%E), namely: C1 (<5%E), C2 (5%E - <10%E), C3 (10%E - <15%E), C4 (15%E - <20%E), C5 (20%E - 25%E), and C6 (>25%E). Results: 48% of subjects had added sugar intake exceeding the WHO recommendation. Subjects with iron and zinc intake below the Estimated Average Requirement (EAR) were 15.2% and 24.1%, respectively. As the added sugar consumption increased, iron and zinc intake decreased significantly (p<0.05). This study found a significant decrease in the intake of iron occurred at added sugar consumption ≥20%E (C5 and above) while decreasing the intake of zinc at added sugar consumption ≥15%E (C4 and above) (p<0,05). Conclusions: Added sugar consumption had an inverse association with iron and zinc intake among children aged 24-59 months, which showed the occurrence of micronutrient dilution.
