Abstract

Scientific literacy includes students' ability to understand scientific concepts, apply that knowledge to solve problems and make decisions based on scientific information. Meanwhile, critical thinking skills involve analysing, evaluating, and synthesising information logically. This study aims to analyse scientific literacy skills, critical thinking skills, and the relationship between the two in elementary school students. The research method used is a quantitative approach with a correlational type. The population in the study involved 68 students of grade V MI Muhammadiyah Trangsan, so a sample of 58 students was obtained using the Slovin formula. The sampling technique used was simple random sampling. Data were collected through essay tests of scientific literacy and critical thinking skills on the water cycle material. The results showed an average value of scientific literacy of 62.71, which is in the moderate category; an average value of critical thinking skills of 71.93, which is in the moderate category; and a correlation coefficient value of 0.617, which indicates a fairly strong positive relationship. This result means that the higher the students' scientific literacy skills, the better their critical thinking skills. A simple linear regression test shows R2 = 0.381, meaning that scientific literacy factors influence 33.8% of critical thinking skills, while other factors influence the remaining 66.2%. This finding indicates the importance of strengthening scientific literacy in learning to improve students' critical thinking skills.

Abstract

Biology practicum is an important part of learning that aims to strengthen conceptual understanding through direct experience. This study aims to identify factors that influence biology practicum activities, especially on the material of plant development structure. This study uses a quantitative method with a survey approach, involving 15 students of the Biology Education study program who have participated in the Plant Development Structure practicum. Data were collected through a closed questionnaire with a Likert scale (1-5) and structured interviews with students and lecturers to obtain more in-depth information. The analysis showed that collaboration skills had the highest average (4.53) and were the dominant factor in supporting the smooth running of the practicum. Student motivation also played a significant role (4.13), indicating high enthusiasm for participating in the practicum. Other factors, such as laboratory facilities, use of practicum tools, and time management, had the same average value (3.80), indicating that these factors were quite supportive but still needed improvement. Meanwhile, understanding practicum procedures had the lowest average (3.53) with the highest standard deviation (0.834), indicating significant variation in student understanding. The interview results revealed that limited laboratory facilities, lack of skills in using laboratory equipment, and difficulties in time management were the main obstacles to laboratory activities. Overall, this study highlights the importance of collaboration skills and motivation in supporting the effectiveness of laboratory work. In addition, improvements in understanding procedures and providing more adequate facilities and tools are needed to improve the quality of learning in biology laboratory activities.

Abstract

The concept of halal tourism has become a trend and focus of discussion lately. This shows the dynamization of fiqh in the tourism sector. This study aims to explore how the management of Sariater hot springs in Subang responds to fiqh, which is the needs of tourists who implement the concept of halal tourism. The method used is qualitative with primary data from interviews with tourism managers and site observations. Secondary data uses documentation of releases on internet media. As a result, the manager of Sariater responds to the dynamism of fiqh owned by tourists by making policies that lead to the concept of halal tourism. There are three actions that researchers get; first, maintaining cleanliness and preserving trees around tourist attractions, reflecting hifzu al-bi’ah; second, providing special facilities for women (Women Only), demonstrating hifzu al-din; third, monitoring water temperature and mineral content to ensure compliance with hifzu al-nafs. The author recommends that additional facilities be provided in the future, such as halal-certified food and beverages, as well as sharia-compliant massage services, to enhance the overall halal tourism experience and attract more Muslim and non-Muslim tourists

Abstract

Stomata are important structures on the leaf surface that function to regulate gas exchange and water loss in plants. Students often experience misconceptions about the relationship between plant structure and function because the learning resources used tend to be text-based without the support of contextual examples or direct observation. This study aims to identify the types of stomata in three types of shade trees within the UIN Raden Mas Said environment, serving as contextual learning resources for plant structure and development. This type of research is descriptive qualitative. The materials used include ketapang leaves (Terminalia catappa), pulai leaves (Alstonia scholaris), and breadfruit leaves (Artocarpus altilis), as well as distilled water. Observations were made under a light microscope at 100× and 400× magnification. The observation data were analysed descriptively by comparing the characteristics of the stomata found in the three species with those of stomata types in the literature. Observations show that ketapang (Terminalia catappa) and breadfruit (Artocarpus altilis) leaves have anomocytic stomata, while pulai (Alstonia scholaris) leaves have anisocytic stomata. These findings provide stomatal morphology data that can be used as locally based teaching materials to enhance students' connections between botanical concepts and their environment.

Abstract

Background: Inquiry-based Biology learning requires adequate pedagogical support to foster the development of problem-solving skills and creativity among pre-service teachers. However, in the absence of structured guidance, students often experience difficulties in carrying out scientific inquiry processes. Integrating scaffolding within a STEM framework offers a promising approach to support more systematic and interdisciplinary learning. Objectives: This study aimed to examine the implementation of Scaffolding Inquiry-Based STEM and its association with students’ problem-solving skills and creativity in a Microbiology course. Methods: A mixed-methods approach with an embedded design was employed. The quantitative component used a one-group pretest–posttest design involving 15 students (n = 15), while qualitative data were collected through observations, interviews, and documentation to enrich the interpretation of the findings. Results: The results indicate improvements in problem-solving skills, particularly in problem identification, strategy application, reasoning, and evaluation. In addition, students’ creativity showed enhancement across multiple dimensions, including curiosity, fluency, originality, flexibility, elaboration, and risk-taking. Conclusion: These findings suggest that Scaffolding Inquiry-Based STEM is associated with the development of key 21st-century competencies among pre-service biology teachers. However, the absence of a control group limits the extent to which causal inferences can be drawn. Despite this limitation, the approach demonstrates potential for fostering more structured and meaningful Biology learning in higher education contexts.
