Abstract

Essay writing is a valuable activity for expressing ideas and concepts in a written form. On the other hand, literacy is an essential skill in comprehending, expressing, and analyzing information. Many students need help with literacy, which can impact their ability to comprehend texts and effectively convey ideas. The approach of essay writing competitions has proven to be an effective way to enhance students' literacy skills. This activity aims to motivate high school students in West Sumatra to engage in literacy activities actively. This involves a writing competition, employing methods such as distributing competition flyers across various social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and WhatsApp, as well as sending letters to accessible schools. To stimulate participants' interest and socialize and develop selected sub-themes, the activity procedures include writing workshops conducted by renowned writing coaches like Ahmad Fuadi, an Indonesian bestselling author, and Rilda Taneka, an Indonesian literary figure. The outcomes of this activity include broadening perspectives, enhancing logical thinking, and improving the ability to articulate opinions with relevant sources. The essay writing competition has a positive impact on increasing students' interest in writing, evidenced by the substantial number of submissions received, all meeting initial criteria such as originality, alignment with the theme, and adherence to the stipulated rules, before being assessed by the judges. This indicates participants' understanding of the competition rules, initially driven by their interest to participate. Looking ahead, it is hoped that there will be more opportunities for students across various educational levels to compete in literacy-related fields.

Abstract

Writing is a language skill that is used to communicate indirectly. The ability and willingness to write students who are involved in journalism, such as creative writing, are minimal. To address this, it is necessary to solve the classic problems of learners, especially students in the world of writing and literacy. This activity involved students in the Education and Teacher Training Department. It is hoped that this activity can increase students' willingness and ability to write in the field of creative writing. This activity is carried out in the form of training activities with direct assistance during training and after training. Writing training activities are carried out in an exciting and fun way, using image media for the student level. So that students are not bored, besides the lecture method, it is also equipped with training. The training method is carried out using efficient delivery, discussion, and hands-on practice, divided into three sessions: imagination, fiction, and expression. Through this training activity, participants are expected to increase their willingness and ability in writing. There will be more opportunities to publish creative writing results online with available means and channels. After the training was carried out, there was an increase in his abilities and willingness, especially in making Minang poetry and Indonesian language poetry fictional prose created in a short time. Furthermore, the activity was closed with the publication of their writing on the minangsatu.com page, which would continue periodically.

Abstract

Nagari Sijunjung has become a concern of various parties since registering Jorong Padang Ranah and Tanah Bato as world heritage and traditional villages. Both regions have many big houses, which is one of the essential bases for registration. However, apart from the big houses and their physical architecture, Nagari Sijunjung, especially Padang Ranah and Tanah Bato, have much intangible cultural heritage stored in the memory of a small part of the community. This intangible cultural heritage is neglected and forgotten, even though it can be an essential part of the registration to UNESCO. This activity aims to provide knowledge and understanding to the people of Padang Ranah and Tanah Bato about the importance of their intangible cultural heritage and document the intangible cultural heritage that exists in Padang Ranah and Tanah Bato, Nagari Sijunjung. This activity was carried out in Padang Ranah and Tanah Bato Nagari Sijunjung, West Sumatra. The methods used in this counseling are lectures and discussions. Documentation of this activity is also carried out by producing intangible cultural archives. The results of the activities obtained are counseling and documentation activities carried out by the people of Padang Ranah and Tanah Bato. They can understand and begin to document the intangible cultural products they have. They also do not hesitate to pass it on to the younger generation, so they do not just disappear. Archiving efforts are also needed as supporting documents for the existence of cultural heritage owned by the community. Through this activity, the people of Padang Ranah and Tanah Bato are expected to understand and also begin to become products of their intangible culture.

Abstract

This devotion looks at the effectiveness of traditional Minangkabau games as a medium for healing trauma for children affected by the cold lava disaster of Mount Marapi in West Sumatra. Natural disasters not only have physical impacts, but also psychological ones, especially for children. A culturally based approach is considered relevant to restore children's emotional well-being contextually. This devotion used a descriptive qualitative approach, with data collected through observation, interviews with 36 children, and questionnaires distributed to teachers and parents. The results showed that 88.9% of children preferred traditional games such as tug-of-war, tire racing, and cracker-eating competitions to modern games. These games, which are collaborative and competitive, help reduce stress, rebuild self-confidence, and restore social interaction. Around 83.3% of children were already familiar with these games before the disaster, making familiarity a key factor in fostering a sense of safety and comfort during the recovery process. Trauma symptoms—such as excessive sleepiness, fear, and sleep disturbances—remained, but play activities showed positive impacts. Furthermore, 97.5% of teachers supported the use of traditional games, indicating strong acceptance in the school environment. In addition to serving as an effective psychosocial intervention, traditional games also strengthen cultural identity and community resilience. These findings update and enrich previous research by offering a local context and a child-participatory approach. Thus, traditional games can serve as a strategic alternative for post-disaster trauma recovery in children.

Abstract

Background: This article examines the normative gap within the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR) concerning the regulation of internal democracy within political parties. While Article 25 guarantees the procedural right to vote and to be elected, it does not sufficiently address substantive democratic deficits such as oligarchic practices, vote buying, and the absence of internal party accountability. Methodology: The analysis is grounded in normative legal research, relying on doctrinal interpretation of international human rights instruments, particularly the ICCPR, and exploring the horizontal application of human rights and the state's due diligence obligations with respect to political parties. Objectives: The primary objective is to argue that political parties, as pivotal actors in democratic systems, should be subject to human rights standards, especially regarding integrity, participation, and non-discrimination, and to identify legal mechanisms that could strengthen internal party democracy under international law. Findings: The study finds that existing international legal instruments inadequately regulate the internal functioning of political parties, allowing undemocratic practices that undermine the substantive realization of political rights. It also identifies that the state's positive obligations can justify regulatory oversight of political party governance. Originality/Novelty: This article advances three normative proposals to fill the regulatory void: the drafting of a new General Comment to Article 25 of the ICCPR, the adoption of an Optional Protocol to impose binding obligations, and the creation of UN Guiding Principles as soft law. These proposals collectively offer a novel framework for reconstructing political rights substantively and reinforcing democratic legitimacy through international law.

Abstract

Racism is always an interesting topic to debate and from the movie A United Kingdom by Amma Asante. The researcher wants to feeling the racism issues and impact of racism, and to feeling the racism that faced in the main character of Seretse Khama. The researcher used qualitative descriptive method. It is suitable for this research because when people analyze it, there are many interpretations and perceptions, and the qualitative method can bind the whole differences of interpretation and perception. The researcher took the data from the dialogues that contains racism which was taken from the script and movie. There are three issues of racism. First, discrimination the act of racism is the negative treatment from white people to black people. Second, prejudice was given by white people to people of their color for no reasons. The third, segregation was given by white people to black people by a great separation between whites and blacks. three impact of racism that experienced by main character Seretse Khama. Those are: Grief, rage, and humiliation.

Abstract

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengidentifikasi satuan lingual yang membentuk campur kode dan bahasa yang terlibat dalam percampuran kode dalam tuturan video Instagram Jonan_55, seorang konten kreator dari Minangkabau. Metode penelitian yang digunakan adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data berupa simak bebas libat cakap dan catat. Data yang terkumpul dianalisis berdasarkan tataran lingual (kata, frasa, klausa, kalimat) dan jenis percampuran bahasa. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa campur kode terjadi pada semua tataran lingual, dengan dominasi pada tataran kata. Bahasa yang terlibat dalam percampuran kode adalah bahasa Minangkabau, bahasa Indonesia, dan bahasa Inggris, dengan pola yang paling umum adalah penyisipan unsur bahasa Indonesia ke dalam tuturan berbahasa Minangkabau. Penelitian ini juga menemukan adanya percampuran tiga bahasa dalam satu tuturan. Fenomena campur kode ini diduga kuat sebagai strategi komunikasi untuk menciptakan kelucuan dan menjangkau audiens yang lebih luas di media sosial. Penelitian ini memberikan kontribusi pada kajian sosiolinguistik mengenai penggunaan bahasa di ranah digital dan implikasinya bagi kreator konten serta pengajaran bahasa.

Abstract

Artikel ini mendeskripsikan satuan lingual, makna, dan fungsi umpatan dalam bahasa Minangkabau yang terdapat di kolom komentar akun Instagram @baruaktamvan. Dengan menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif dan metode deskriptif, data penelitian berupa komentar-komentar yang mengandung umpatan pada unggahan akun Instagram  periode Maret hingga September 2020. Analisis data dilakukan dengan metode padan translasional dan pragmatis, serta mempertimbangkan konteks interaksi virtual.Hasilnya menunjukkan bahwa satuan lingual umpatan bervariasi dalam bentuk kata (leksem tunggal dan reduplikasi), frasa, klausa, dan kalimat. Makna umpatan tidak hanya bersifat konseptual, tetapi juga konotatif (merendahkan, mengejek), tematik (penekanan), dan afektif (ekspresi emosi). Fungsi umpatan yang teridentifikasi meliputi ekspresi marah, kesal, menyesal, heran, menghina, dan menirukan dialog dalam konten media.Penggunaan umpatan dalam bahasa Minangkabau di media sosial merupakan fenomena linguistik yang kompleks, dipengaruhi oleh dinamika interaksi daring dan konteks konten. Umpatan tidak hanya sekadar kata kasar, tetapi juga alat ekspresi multifungsi dengan makna pragmatis yang beragam. Implikasi penelitian ini menyoroti pentingnya kesadaran berbahasa, literasi media, dan peran pendidikan dalam mempromosikan komunikasi daring yang lebih santun. Penelitian lanjutan disarankan untuk pemahaman yang lebih mendalam tentang faktor-faktor yang memengaruhi penggunaan dan interpretasi umpatan di media sosial.
