Abstract

Background:  There are challenges in journalism today, including misinformation, low-level news literacy, and declining interest in traditional news formats. To respond to the challenges, this article reports an applied study project about Arya, an AI-driven chatbot designed to convey factual information through conversational and interactive storytelling. Purpose: This research explores the feasibility, user acceptance, and indications of Arya’s communicative potential in supporting a personalized, engaging, and verifiable news consumption experience. Methods: The project employed an approach so-called Design Science Research (DRS) and Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to ensure the use of theories of anthropomorphism, parasocial interaction, and artificial communication in enhancing engagement and trust through adaptive human-like traits. Results: It is found that Arya may facilitate more personalized and engaging news experiences. Users respond positively to a conversational approach that blends storytelling and Q&A. However, some limitations were found in terms of scope, adaptability, and naturalness. Conclusion: Chatbot designs for conveying factual information need to incorporate anthropomorphism to enhance users’ trust and comfort during interactions. It is not only about technical efforts but also the need to design communication methods that feel human and consistent. Nevertheless, accuracy and transparency are priorities, especially for journalists. Implications: Combining rule-based logic, LLMs, and RAG can be a strategy for more verifiable communication. Furthermore, the application of anthropomorphism and parasocial interaction principles could strengthen engagement, but it should be balanced with flexibility, knowledge, and dialogue quality to make the system more natural and resilient.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine and analyze the motives of Sumedang residents in consuming Sumedang Ekspres as their primary mass media. People in the Sumedang region, West Java, are significant to examine because of their unique characteristics in using mass media. They are among the few who still rely on print newspapers for news, especially Sumedang Ekspres, in the age of online media. That is the main reason for looking at their motivation in consuming this newspaper as their primary source of information. This study used quantitative research methods with explanatory case studies, using questionnaires as instruments for collecting data. Theoretically, the audience's needs would be satisfied if their motives in consuming media were met. As a result, certain media that can fulfill the needs will be considered effective outlets. This is a basic assumption of the Uses and Gratifications Theory, which is employed as a theoretical basis of this study. The sample in this study was 95 respondents, taken from residents of Sumedang who consume Sumedang Ekspres on regular basis. The results show that the informational motive, as well as social motive, were implemented moderately by the respondents in terms of consuming Sumedang Ekspres as the major media. It is recommended to conduct further research by looking at the impact of people's motives toward newspaper reading satisfaction.

Management of conflict and negotiation played an important role in solving a dispute. Both actions were not simple tasks in resolving conflicts since different points of view usually involve. This was what happened in the dispute of animal welfare issue between Bandung Zoo and Scorpion Wildlife Foundation. The dispute that became the focus of this article related to the accusation raised by the Scorpion Wildlife Foundation towards the Bandung Zoo in terms of animal welfare abandonment. The conflict between the two organizations has increased because the zoo did not accept the allegations and intended to bring the foundation to a legal court for the reason of defamation. This article looked at the use of the management of conflict and the negotiation to resolve this conflict by the Agency of Natural Resources of West Java as facilitator. The study used constructive case study method to chronologically construct the conflict and the use of negotiation. The results showed that the facilitator dominated the negotiation process, while the conflicting parties have not had any agreement to resolve the problem. The condition had a potential to be invalid any time if the dispute was not completely resolved.

Abstract

The human-crocodile conflict frequently happens in Indonesia. Based on the data from http://www.crocodile-attack.info/, it is claimed that Indonesia is a country with the most cases of crocodile attacks. Mostly the attacks involved the saltwater crocodile (Crocodylus porosus). On the other hand, this conflict is worsened by the spread of inaccurate information among communities. From October 2019 to October 2021, there were 12 false stories about crocodile attacks. These hoaxes were distributed on social media, causing fear to those who consumed the information. It is crucial to be investigated, especially from the perspective of environmental journalism. This study describes how mainstream media outlets tried to clarify the hoaxes. The results show many materials contained by information disorder, which need to be clarified by the media to ensure clarity and truth for the public. This study finds that most mainstream media still have their conscience to protect the public from false information. It was done by practicing curation journalism that includes the discipline of verification. In conclusion, the media and information sources need to have a good comprehension of crocodile behavior. The research also catches the need for environmental journalism training for media practitioners in Indonesia. Thus, the media will be able to offer the best solution for reducing the attack while at the same time giving adequate education for the public to live in harmony with Indonesian flora and fauna.

Abstract

Social media has transformed into a "free" advertising instrument. By using User-Generated Contents (UGC) technology, an instant publication about engaging activities in a particular area will encourage other people's interest to have the same experience. However, the effectiveness of tourism promotion turned out to have negative impacts, one of them is related to environmental issues because the behavior that has been published is not necessarily on the same track with the perspective of environmental conservation. It happened to Mount Kamojang and Papandayan nature reserve, West Java, where a part of the area has been converted into a nature tourism park. One reason for the change of status is to attract people's interest to visit the Kamojang and Papandayan areas. This interest could be seen from the many comments on social media that also promote the natural beauty of the place. By using a qualitative method with a case study approach, this study explains the dynamics involved in social media that influence the counter-productive behaviors in environmental issues. The results of the study show that social media contents have encouraged the public to access nature tourism areas, including the closed area in the Garut Regency. Additionally, the viral information was then used by stakeholders as a weapon to persuade the authorities to change the status of the area into a a tourist attraction. This study recommends a review of the policy related to the nature reserve's status amendment, considering the sustainability of environmental conservation in Indonesia.
