Abstract

This research deals with the way of male and female participants of different social status in delivering argumentation on instagram. The purpose of this study was to explain the way male and female instagram participants in arguing on instagram, to describe how social status affects the languages of male and female instagram participants of different social status communicating in instagram and to explain the reason of male and female instagram participants use the language in the way they are. This research is conducted by applying qualitative descriptive research. The data in this study are nine arguments from male instagram participants who have higher status, lower and equal with female and nine arguments from female instagram participants who have higher status, lower and equal with male which has been selected in about two months. The findings indicate that male instagram participants tend to use conjunction, conditional and biconditional to convey their arguments in instagram, whereas female instagram participants tend to use the five types of argumentation ie negation, conjunction, dicjunction, conditional and biconditional in instagram. Male with higher social status argue in conditional with female and male of equal status, male of equal status argue conjunction with female and male of equal status, lower status male argue conjunction with male and female whose status is higher. Female with higher social status argue negation, disjunction and biconditional with female and male of lower status, female of equal status argue negation and conditional with equal status of female and male, male with status lower use conjunction and conditional with male and female whose status is higher. The reason why male and female instagram participants differ in their arguing is that instagram participants with high social status tend to be affected by their social status, they tend to use the argument to show that they are competitive and wise in arguing. While instagram participants who are of equal social status, tend to show solidarity and maintain communication. Participants with lower social status tend to be selfish by giving arguments that seem undeniable or responsive. Keywords: gender language, instagram participants, social status

Abstract

This research dealt with the idiom translation strategies. The objectives of this study were: (1) to describe the types of idiom translation strategies in Edensor novel; (2) to describe the context of idiom translation strategies are applied in Edensor novel. The data were obtained from the idiom translation strategies in Edensor novel both its original and English version. This research applied qualitative research design. The data were collected through documentation and observation by reading the novel and listing the idioms found. The findings of this study have revealed that: 1). There were four types of idiom translation strategies in Edensor novel found, they are using an idiom of similar meaning and form (6.9%), using an idiom of similar meaning but dissimilar form (3%), translating an idiom by paraphrase(79,2%) and translating idiom by word for word (10,9%).While, the omission strategy was not found in this study; 2) the context applied in translating Indonesian idioms in Edensor novel into its English version were linguistic context and social cultural context. Abstract

The objectives of the study was To find out to what extent does the design of story book in English match the preschoolers’ language development, to find out how story book in English designed to cope with the Pre-schoolers, to find out the reason why  story book in English designed as it was for pre-Schoolers. The study was research and development. The existing story book was Moo’s Smelly Jumper from David Brown. There were several uncommon words, and the book was not intended in indicators K-13 Curricullum.  The researcher wanted to develop a new story book in English for Preschoolers in Medan based on the position of EFL in Indonesia and the preschoolers’ language development in English. The story book was about my pets and me. The researcher develop 6 of pets, cat, rabbit, fish, bird, dog, and rooster. The researcher create the uncommon words to be common word to the preschoolers by presenting the explanation of picture of the object, and the function of the object. the story book was intended to the indicator in K-13 Curricullum. The findings of the study showed that (1)  The findings of the existing story book the total score in general were ”2” (the criteria was partially met). And then, preschoolers’ language development, namely 80% matched with Slobin’s theory in Semantic, 76% in Grammatic and 72% preschoolers in Phonology. (2). Based on the validation of the book by the experts, the book got some the revision in the content and in the layout. Finally the book would be : The content : Included the learning outcome, the text was intended to achieve the indicator of K-13 curricullum, namely preschoolers are able to love the pets such as rabbit, cat, dog, birds, and roooster. The layout : the size of page number was not too big, the background was colorfull to attrack The preschoolers’ attention. The series book of “Gunggung is my Dog, Brave Rooster, Miaw the Cheerfull cat, Bird’s sad whistle, and Missing Fish  ” had been design to achieved the standard competence which was written in syllabus kemendikbud no 37, “the preschoolers can love the God’s living things” where the theme was “Pets” in the first semester.  Based on the findings, it can be concluded that the book was appropriate for Preschoolers in Medan. some suggestion were directed to To teacher of Preschool in Medan supposed giving more attention to the preschoolers’ language development in Medan in doing story telling by using a story book in English, to other researcher, it was suggested that this reseach could be further expanded, elaborated, and explored in other field in ordet to contribute the development, especially in story book, and to all the readers, it was suggested to use this research as the reference for other research in educational research and Development.Keywords : develop, story book, PreSchoolers,

Abstract

The objectives of the study were to find out: (1) the realization of presupposition triggers in editorials of The Jakarta Post (2) the reasons for using presupposition triggers. The study was descriptive qualitative. The source of data was The Jakarta Post online website. The data of the study were the sentences or clause which triggered the presupposed meaning in editorials. The data were identified, analyzed, and categorized based on Levinson’s theory. The findings of the study showed that: (1) 12 from 13 presupposition triggers were found namely: definite description, factive verb, implicative verb, change of state verbs, judging verbs, iterative item, cleft sentences, questions, temporal clause, comparison clause, counterfactual conditional sentence and non-restrictive relative clause, while implicit cleft with stressed constituents was not found. (2) The reasons were a) commonly to present the background information which is assumed to be true, b) to recall the readers toward the information of the event that they have not unintentionally acknowledged, c) to interpret the editorialists’ attitude on the fact of the event and d) to awaken the readers’ curiosity to the questioning things.   Keywords: Editorials, Presupposition Triggers, Levinson theory.

Abstract

This study was aimed at examining the Silence of students in EFL Classroom. The objectives of this study were to find out the types and the reason of silence is used by students in Industry Engineering. This study was conducted by descriptive qualitative method. The source of data was recording and interview. The technique of data collection was recording and interview. The technique of data analysis was interactive model by Miles, Huberman and Saldana (2014). The findings of the study showed that: ATDS students in EFL classroom just uses 9 types out of 12 types of silence. They are: (1)The wise or virtuous silent, (2) The modest silent,(3)The cunning silent, (4)The eloquent silent, (5)The dumb founded silent, (6) The culpable silent, (7)The strong silent, (8)The weak silent, (9) The dead silent.Keywords: Silence, EFL Classroom

Abstract

This research was aimed at comparing the use of code mixing  in relation to the pattern of code mixing used by male and female students at Mahad Muhammad Saman Islamic Boarding School Medan. The data of the study were 10 male students and 10 female students’ utterances which contain Indonesian-English code mixing. The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The instrument used for this study were questionnaire and interview. The data were analyzed  by Miles and Huberman and Saldana data analysis. (1) The research findings showed in the pattern of insertion, females are more frequent used it than males.  Females are  used it 53% and males used it 38%. In the pattern of alternation, males are more frequent used it than females. Males used it 38% but females used it 21%. In the pattern of congruent lexicalization, females are more frequent used it than males.  Females used it 26% but males used it 24%.male students tend to use noun or verb, while female students tend to use the word lah, kan, ya. Keywords:Pattern of code mixing, insertion, alternation and congruent lexicalization.

Abstract

This study presents a research conducted on Experiential Function in Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. The main objective was to describe the types and the dominant processes and Circumstances in Experiential Function in Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. It presented a qualitative design dealing with quantifiable (numeric) mode. The source of data was taken from Experiential Function in Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China. The data were collected by applying documentary technique. The data analysis found out the findings indicating that there were 6 types of process used, they were 21 (22.11 %) Material Process, 39 (41.06 %) Mental Process, 28 (29.47 %) Relational Process, 0 (0.%) for Behavioral Process, 6 (6.36 %) Verbal Process, and 0 (0. %) Existential Process. It means that the dominant pattern of Process is Mental. Meanwhile, there are 7 patterns of Circumstances found in the Joko Widodo’s speech at APEC Summit 2014 in Beijing, China They are 0 (0 %) for Extent, 31 (32.63%) for Location, 13 (13.68%) for Manner, 5 (5.26%) for Cause, 5 (5.26 %) for Contingency, 0 (0 %) for Accompaniment, and 0 (0 %) for Role. It means that the dominant pattern of Circumstance is Location. It proves that the use of Process and Circumstance were related to the context of situation.Keywords: Experiantial Function, Jokowi’s speech, Process.

Abstract

The aims of this study were to find out the types of translation procedures in Patient Information Leaflets, to describe the realization of translation procedures and to explain about the reason of certain translation procedures realized in Patient Information Leaflets.The research was conducted by using qualitative descriptive design. The data of this study was translation unit that consists of words, phrases, clauses and sentences in Patient Information Leaflets in two versions, English as the source text and Bahasa Indonesia as the target text. The data was analyzed by using the theory of Translation Procedures based on (Vinay and Darbelnet ; 2000) to find the types, realization and the reason of certain translation procedures were used in Patient Information Leaflets. The results of the study were (1) there were eight types of translation procedures in patient information leflets namely borrowing, calque, literal translation, transposition, modulation, equivalent, deletion and mixing procedures. (2)There were some realization of translation procedures in patient information leaflets , namely pure loanwords, naturalization, word for word translation, optional transposition, obligatory transposition, free modulation, obligatory modulation, equivalency, reduction, and combining procedures, and (3) there were seven reasons behind the realization of translation procedures namely the concept of the source text is unknown, preserving the verbatim meaning of the source text, unequivalent grammatical structures between source language and target language, naturalism in translation, clarity in translation, familiarity and maintaining the original terms of the source text.Key Words: Translation, Translation Procedures, Patient Information Leaflets, English and Bahasa Indonesia.

Abstract

The objective of this study was to discover the realizations of impolite utterances used by the readers as their responses on online news comments in viva.co.id news site. The study was conducted by using qualitative descriptive which case study was used in order to describe the impolite readers responses in viva.co.id news site. The data of this study were words, phrases, clauses and sentences consist of impolite reader response on online news comments in viva.co.id which the data were taken from 22  titles of political news about Basuki Cahaya Purnama . The data were the reader’s utterances on online news comments in political news in order to find out the recurrence and the pattern of the data based on the problem of the study. It was found that impolite utterances were realized by online news readers through disinterested, unconcerned, unsymphatetic; inappropriate identity markers; abscure or secretive language; seek disagreement; taboo words; call the other names; frighten; condescend, scorn of ridicule; negative personalize; disassociate from others and insult. Keywords: Impolite Utterances, Realization of Impoliteness

Abstract

This study aimed at exploring the impoliteness strategies in governor election debate 2017. The objectives of the study were to describe, to explain how types of impoliteness strategies used and to expose the reasons. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were the utterances of the governor candidates in two different debate sessions which were analyzed by using Culpeper Impoliteness Theory. The findings revealed that there were three out of five impoliteness strategies found in both debates, namely bald on record impoliteness, positive impoliteness and negative impoliteness. The governor candidates used the bald on record in three realizations, positive impoliteness in seven realizations and negative impoliteness in three realizations. There are some reasons of using the impoliteness strategies, namely to vent negative feelings, to mock others, to show disagreement, to show power, and to clarify something. However, the main reason to use the impoliteness strategies was to show power. Moreover, it is also revealed that both two different types of impoliteness strategies and two different realizations were used at the same moment.Keywords: election debate, governor candidates, impoliteness strategies
