Abstract

According to studies, MBTI personality types exhibit different cognitive function preferences, where a strong inclination towards certain traits can influence how well individuals receive and process information. This is related to intelligence and problem-solving abilities, including the impact on foreign language learning. Understanding the role of personality traits in language learning can significantly enhance educational strategies. Despite growing interest in personalized education, the influence of personality on language acquisition remains underexplored, particularly for Arabic learners. Our research examines the impact of the MBTI personality dimensions of introversion and intuition on Arabic language performance as a second language among Indonesian students. We studied 53 college students majoring in Arabic language-related fields. Using the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) and an Arabic language proficiency test, we conducted data analysis through multiple linear regression, ensuring robustness with assumption tests for residual normality, multicollinearity, and heteroscedasticity. The results indicated that the introversion and intuition dimensions of the MBTI did not significantly affect Arabic language performance (F-test: Sig. 0.696 > 0.05 and t-test 0.411, 0.754 > 0.05). These findings suggest that introversion and intuition may not be critical factors in Arabic L2 proficiency. This research provides insights for the development of Arabic language teaching programs, emphasizing that factors other than personality may play a more significant role in language performance. However, the complex relationship between personality and language learning warrants further investigation to fully understand the dynamics at play.

Abstract

Abstract

Over the past decade, at least more than 2.500 studies on Foreign Language Speaking Anxiety (FLSA) in the context of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) have been conducted over the globe. While English serves as a lingua franca (Alptekin, 2012), the research outcomes concerning FLSA towards English conducted by researchers worldwide cannot be universally generalized across all languages. This systematic review aims to examine the studies, processes, and findings regarding FLSA for non-Latin languages Other Than English (LOTE) popular in South East Asia (SEA), including Arabic, Mandarin, Japanese, and Korean. The review identified a total of 18 journal articles published in four countries (Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines), with most studies conducted in higher education settings using quantitative methods, predominantly cross-sectional. Findings reveal that students in SEA continue to experience moderate to high levels of FLSA, primarily attributed to Fear of Negative Evaluation (FNE) by peers and Communication Apprehension (CA). Additionally, negative correlations and positive influences of variables such as Achievement, Willingness to Communicate (WTC), Motivation, Humor, Online Classes, and Teacher Behavior on FLSA have been explored. Despite the comprehensive review, there are still significant gaps and wide-ranging potential for further research, including FLSA studies in other SEA countries, as well as investigations into non-conventional formal settings such as language courses and contemporary platforms like Video Chat Platform, Language exchange app, and AI Assistant.

Abstract

The Vision 2030 policy initiated by Muhammad bin Salman has had a great influence on social, cultural, and political life in Saudi Arabia. This policy aims to improve and maintain the stability of the country's economy and free itself from dependence on natural resources, namely oil. This study aims to reveal or identify changes in the lifestyle of Saudi Arabian women after Muhammad bin Salman's reforms and the influence of Saudi Arabian women's policies on the country based on literature that discusses these problems. The approach used in this study is a qualitative approach using literature study methods. Of the 30 literatures obtained from official news websites, journal articles, theses and books, this study uses the theory of modernity and self-identity from Anthony Giddens (1991), which shows that Saudi Arabian women have experienced changes in lifestyle after Muhammad bin Salman's reforms through the Vision 2030 Policy based on cultural, employment, social, and educational aspects that have an impact on improving the country's economy.

Abstract

Abstract

This research aims to reveal the alignment of the BBC news portal in the conflict that occurred at the 2022 World Cup. From October to the end of November 2022, the BBC will carry headlines about the Qatar-LGBTQ community-FIFA triangular conflict. This BBC news is interesting to examine critically through the lens of Ruth Wodak (2001), namely historical and discursive strategies. This study uses the Wodak paradigm to criticize the BBC news text about the conflict to reveal the media's ideology and partiality in this case. Wodak always involves historical aspects of discourse content because news texts never stand alone but are related to events in the past. The discursive aspect becomes a tool to frame how news is presented using language as a social practice. The research results state that the BBC is a pro-LGBTQ community. This inclination can be seen from the BBC's language presentation, word choice, and the language structure used by the BBC in presenting news. The BBC is also very skilled at inserting rejection of Qatar's principles through human rights presentations.

Abstract

In 2020, one news that shook the world was the murder of an Afro-American named George Floyd by Minneapolis police officers. This study focuses on the media coverage of George Floyd’s murder case by two news outlets, CNN and Aljazeera. We used a Corpus-assisted Critical Discourse Analysis (CACDA) technique to compare how each news outlet portrayed the social actors involved in the incident and to identify if any social actors were excluded from the reporting, eventually revealing which side each media was inclined to. The analysis was based on Theo Van Leeuwen’s theory and utilized the Antconc application. The data used in this study consists of ten news articles, five from CNN and Aljazeera, published between May and July 2020. A literature study was conducted to collect the data. The Antconc corpus-processing application was then used to process the large amount of data collected, enabling quick, extensive, and comprehensive analysis. We uploaded all ten articles to the Antconc application and used the frequency feature to identify the five most used words in the ten news articles. The top five words were further analyzed using van Leeuwen’s critical discourse analysis, excluding irrelevant particles. The result shows that CNN aligned with the police and Aljazeera aligned with Floyd. By the ideological stances of CNN and Aljazeera, readers can become more aware of potential biases in news articles concerning George Floyd’s murder.

Abstract

The history and development of Islam in Indonesia are enriched by the existence of manuscripts written in Arabic language or written in Arabic script, like Pegon or Jawi although they do not use Arabic. In the context of corpus linguistics, the manuscript is a proof of the existence and dynamics of real Arabic usage by Indonesian speakers. This paper describes several classifications of manuscripts written in Arabic and their urgency as the material of Arabic corpus data in Indonesia in the context of the development of multidisciplinary Arabic research. Furthermore, the manuscript will be mapped based on seven types of Arabic corpus in Indonesia. Based on the mapping, it is projected that the majority of Arabic manuscripts in the archipelago are categorized as a corpus of scientific works, the corpus of Islamic studies, and corpus of literary works. For this purpose, it is necessary to process those manuscripts into digital text material to be analyzed with corpus processing applications through three stages: image scanning, image conversion into text, and manual text verification.
