Abstract

In EFL settings, in mastering English Language students do not merely study on rule of the language but more on communicative purposes. So, they need more practices using English in the classroom and a teacher has to lead students to always practice English. From the four competences, i.e. linguistic, sociolinguistic, discourse, and strategic competences, they must be integrated to lead students achieve the communicative competence. Authentic materials are not created specifically to be used in the classroom and the use of authentic materials that can be obtained from the materials in surrounding daily life can reinforce the direct relationship between the language classroom and the outside world for the students. It helps students involve in the real language as long as teachers provide them with educational support.

Abstract

This study concerns with the use of lexical density in Reader’s Digest Magazine. This study used quantitative method. In collecting data, the writer used the document method. The source of data of this research is the lexical items and grammatical items in Reader’s Digest Magazine. In analyzing the data, the writer used lexical density theory by Ure. The source of data of this research is the lexical items and grammatical items in Reader’s Digest Magazine. The result of the lexical density shows there are health article with density around 61, 34%, animal kingdom article with density around 61,56%, languages article with density around 58, 83%, parenting article with density around 54, 68%, and travel article with density around 64, 05%. Keywords: Lexical Density, lexical item, grammatical item, Reader’s Digest

Abstract

Percakapan selama kursus privat Matematika antara siswa dan guru adalah Analisis Wacana interaksi interpersonal. Banyak jenis interaksi interpersonal juga menggunakan organisasi bergiliran seperti halnya percakapan biasa. Analisis Percakapan mempelajari berbagai hal yang mendasari percakapan: bagaimana semua yang terlibat dalam percakapan bergantian bicara, bagaimana mereka berorientasi terhadap kedua ucapan lainnya, dan juga konteks sekitarnya. Bergiliran bicara yang dilakukan oleh guru dan siswa dalam kursus privat Matematika umumnya dalam bentuk tanya jawab dengan menggunakan kata-kata tunggal atau frase-frase tunggal. Alokasi giliran bicaranya juga dapat dikenali dengan adanya jeda dan intonasi, serta adanya tumpang tindih berbicara yang terjadi selama percakapan.

Abstract

Friday prayer is indeed a very important weekly occasion because it involves a large section of the Muslim community regardless of their social standing. The sermon (khutbah) is the opportunity to deliver the essential message of Islamand to remind the congregation of their mistakes and shortcomings. Only a right person is appointed for the job. The study used CDA approach by Norman Fairclough. The data taken from youtube that broadcast Friday Khutbah in English. From the study, it is found that in delivering his khutbah, the khatib cited the ayah from the Holy Quran, of course, in Arabic language, to make better understanding. It can be used to convince the jamaah that the khutbah really agree with the content of the Holy book Al Quran, the most comprehensive source book for Muslim. Besides, it was not only the jamaah who should follow the instruction of the khutbah but all people include the khatib, that is why the khatib used the personal pronoun ‘we’ instead of ‘you’ which refers only to the jamaah. Though the khatib has powerful in term of religious knowledge, he did not place himself over the jamaah.

Abstract

            This study examines linguistic landscape perspective of language used in labeling historical objects at the Keraton Sumenep Museum. Keraton Sumenep Museum is a place to collect, treat, present and preserve the historical objects of the Sumenep Palace and one of the tourism destination in Sumenep.  It employed a qualitative method to describe and explain the languages displayed, the sign meterials, and the sign categories in the museum following the taxonomy signs by Spolsky and Cooper. The applied method has assisted the researchers to reach the objectives of this study by getting 124 pictures of landscape linguistic signs. The result of this research shows that linguistic landscape in the museum buildings consist of monolingual and bilingual in Indonesian and English language. The Indonesian language is being chosen because most of the visitors are from locals who can communicate in Indonesian. Moreover, English language is displayed in LL because there are a number of international tourists who come to visit the museum.

Abstract

Poetry is one genre of literature. Literature in general is an art formthat is embodied through a language. A poem can be analyzed from the point of the structure and style of language features, the functions of language, structure and semantic context in all the linguistic frameworks. Through the analysis of lexical cohesion, it is expected to facilitate the reader to comprehend the text as a whole and objectively that lead no multi-interpretations.Analysis of lexical cohesion analysis in a collection of poems Gelap Berlapis-Lapis contain of repetition; repetition of words, phrases or rhythmic repetition. For analysis of synonymy, it consists of absolute and non-absolute synonymy. Meanwhile, aside from the existence of repetition and synonymy, there are also antonymy, hiponymy with its superordinate, metonymy and collocation . From the data analysis, lexical cohesion devices can tie each line into one whole cohesive poem and ease the readers to appreciate the poem through thereferences indicated by the lexical cohesion devices.

Abstract

This study concerns with the use of personal pronouns in political speech. The aims of this study are to find out personal pronouns used in Donald Trump’s speech and their functions. The source of data of this research is the speech by Donald trump at 74th session of the united nation general assembly. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The result shows that Donald Trump used personal pronoun I to emphasize his authority and his good qualities such as confident, share experience, and opinion. Personal pronoun you is used to refer to a specific group when he wants to separate one group from other groups. He also used you to refer to general to avoid conflict. He used personal pronoun inclusive we to involve himself with the united nation member. He used exclusive we to show his good relation with other groups in sharing responsibility. He used personal pronouns they to make him and the united nation members less responsible for other groups activities.

Abstract

Male and female often have their own language features that are also appear on the use of language in a movie. Lead male and female characters in A Star Is Born have their language features. This study is to discuss the language features in the movie and factors which underlie the occurrence of the language features. This is a qualitative study in which the data of this study are in the form of utterances produced by lead male and female characters in A Star Is Born movie. The data were collected by using a non-participant observation method and analyzed from the perspectives of Lakoff (1973) and Xia (2013) on language features, and Holmes (2013) on social factors. The result of the study shows that there are differences and similarities of lead male and female characters in using language. Both lead male and female characters use adjective feature to express their feeling and utilize swear word to show their emotion. Subsequently, in inviting each other, lead male character utilizes rising intonation, while lead female uses super polite form. Besides, in opening a show, the lead male character uses lexical hedges and fillers, while lead female applies super polite form. Nonetheless, the lead male character is inclined to use adverb and lexical hedges and filler in his utterance, while the lead female does not utilize those features. The occurrences of the language features in the lead characters are influenced by participants, setting, topic, and function.

Abstract

Postmodern fiction has unique features that distinguish its works from other works of fiction. It often blurs literary genres and break conventional narration. Tony Morrison’s novel titled Sula, a work that has triggered some critical work, is consid- ered as one of prime texts of this fiction. This article is a report on an investigation of the postmodern features of Morison’s Sula. It is a descriptive qualitative method using the narration and conversation among the characters. It showed that the novel starts with the paradox and ambiguity in the beginning. The author is able to judge the eth- ical or moral ramifications and decipher Sula in either an evil or a good person. It also criticizes patriarchy institution, gender displacement, and associative ambiguity
