Abstract

This study aims to conduct a multimodal discourse analysis of the Sumenep tourism guidebook to understand how verbal and visual elements contribute to its overall promotional effectiveness. The emphasis is on identifying and analyzing these elements to uncover the underlying meanings conveyed through the guidebook. It adopts a qualitative approach, employing discourse analysis methods to examine both visual and verbal elements present in the guidebook. Data collection involved gathering various segments of the guidebook, which were then subjected to a detailed analysis to uncover how these elements interact to form cohesive messages. The theoretical framework used for analysis is based on Kress Leeuwen's Multimodal Discourse Analysis (MDA). The findings reveal that the guidebook effectively employs a combination of verbal and visual elements to promote Lombang beach tourism. These elements work to construct appealing and persuasive messages that attract potential tourists. The study concludes that MDA is a useful tool for understanding the complex interplay between different modes of communication in promotional materials.

Abstract

Novel is sometimes more powerful than other types of literature and art, as such novels are directed to the widest possible audience. They are dramatic works which show interesting qualities by drawing the readers’ interest. Novels also cultivate the imagination, contribute to and deepen the capacity for moral reflection. Novel about Indonesian Muslims, written by non-Indonesians, need to get more attention because the novel has the power to create the identity of Indonesian Muslims through its representation. The identity represented will be viewed not only by Indonesian Muslims but also by people all over the world. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) serves as the study’s main theoretical foundation and Fairclough’s Three-Dimensional Model of Discourse is used to analyze the roles of religious leaders and the indication of power relations between the Indonesian Muslim leader and the American Christians. Abstract

This study aims at explaining the types and functions of interactional metadiscourse markers in the U.S. House Republican primary debate. It is a descriptive qualitative method because the data in this study are the form of words. The source of the data in this study is debate transcripts, while the data are the words, phrases, and sentences in the debate which contain the categories of interactional metadiscourse markers. The results of the study show that there are five types of interactional metadiscourse markers. Those are hedges, boosters, attitude markers, self-mentions, and engagement markers. Self-mentions are the most dominant markers used by the candidates which reach a total of 149 data. Meanwhile, the lowest marker is hedges with a total of 62 data. In addition, the writer also found that each marker has its own function. Hedges aim to show that the speaker's statements are more reasonable opinions than facts. Boosters are used to emphasize or clarify a statement. Attitude markers have a function to show the speaker's attitude towards a proposition. Then self-mentions are used to explicitly show the speaker's presence in the discourse. Meanwhile, engagement markers are used to focus the audience attention or involve them in the discourse.
