Abstract

Abstract

The use of code mixing and code switching is one of the exciting phenomena in social media. This research aims to identify the types of code switching and code mixing and to determine the reasons behind code switching and code mixing in this content. The method of this research employed a qualitative descriptive design. The data of this research were taken from the video “Daniel Tetangga Kamu” with Dewi Sandra's guests for parts 1-3, which focused on the code mixing and switching and the reasons for code mixing and switching between them. In collecting the data, the researcher observes the video, makes a transcription of the recorded data and organizes it into written data, and then classifies it based on the categories. The results showed that the most dominant type of code mixing found on the Daniel Mananta Network is the insertion of words. While the most dominant type of code switching was Intra-sententia, the research revealed that the reasons why the speaker uses code mixing and switching in their conversation were to talk about a particular topic, quoting somebody else, being emphatic about something, switching as an interjection, repetition, clarifying and expressing status of group identity. The implication of this research contributes to revealing that code mixing and code switching were not only prevalent but also serve various communicative functions, reflecting the nuanced ways in which language was used in the context of the YouTube Channel. The insights gained from this research offer valuable implications

Abstract

Understanding meaning in political discourse is crucial, as a speaker’s intentions shape public perception and influence audience perspectives. While many studies have explored speech acts in political contexts, there is still limited analysis focusing specifically on the locutionary and illocutionary acts of Indonesian presidential candidates, particularly in the 2024 debates. This study aims to analyze the types and frequency of locutionary and illocutionary acts used by Anies Baswedan in the first presidential candidate debate of 2024, as well as to interpret the meanings embedded in these speech acts. Employing a qualitative descriptive design, the research collects data in the form of clauses containing types of locutionary and illocutionary acts as the primary source, which then were identified and categorized. The findings reveal 40 instances of locutionary acts, dominated by assertive acts (26), followed by phonetic acts (14) and retic acts (8). Additionally, 42 illocutionary acts were identified, with phatic actions (18) being the most frequent, followed by phonetic (14) and retic actions (8). The analysis uncovered that many of these acts carried persuasive meanings aimed at convincing listeners during the debate. This study offers insights into how Indonesian political figures strategically use language, providing a basis for future research on persuasive speech in political campaigns.

Abstract

With the growing global concern for animal welfare, social media platforms like Instagram are crucial in raising awareness and promoting advocacy. This research investigates the attitudes conveyed in animal welfare messages through the English caption texts on the @jakartaanimalaidnetwork Instagram account. The study aims to identify how the Appraisal System in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) expresses attitudes in these captions, focusing specifically on the categories of Affect, Judgment, and Appreciation. A qualitative descriptive research design was used, with data collected from English captions relevant to animal welfare. Content analysis was employed to categorize the captions based on their emotional (Affect), evaluative (Judgment), and appreciative (Appreciation) contents. The study utilized domain, taxonomy, componential, and cultural theme analysis to interpret the attitudes expressed in the captions. The results revealed that Affect was the most dominant category, with frequent expressions of emotions such as happiness, sadness, and empathy towards the animals. Judgmental expressions, particularly regarding moral evaluation, were also prevalent, reflecting the organization's ethical stance on animal treatment. Appreciation was expressed through a positive animal care assessment, emphasizing the value and quality of animal welfare. Overall, the study highlights the organization's commitment to advocating for the humane treatment of animals, using language that emphasizes compassion, ethical responsibility, and respect for animal rights. These findings demonstrate how the account conveys a clear and supportive message for animal welfare through its use of linguistic attitudes.

Abstract

Background: Prabowo Subianto's 2025 First State Address, a speech that has not been previously examined in academic literature. This study seeks to identify and analyse the linguistic and rhetorical strategies utilized in Prabowo’s speech to unmask his political legitimacy, presidential identity, ideological stance within the Indonesian context. Methodology: Using Teun A. van Dijk’s socio-cognitive model of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA), the study analyzed both the transcript and video recording. Data were coded across macro, super, and micro levels to uncover thematic organization, argumentation patterns, and linguistic devices. Qualitative coding and multimodal cue analysis were employed by identifying recurring linguistic patterns (e.g., pronouns, metaphors, repetition) and correlating them with non-verbal features such as gestures, facial expressions and tone, to interpret how verbal and visual elements jointly construct ideological meaning. Findings: The analysis reveals that Prabowo frames his leadership as a moral and protective force against corrupt elites and economic exploitation. Nationalist appeals such as food self-sufficiency, poverty reduction, and empowerment of the wong cilik reinforce a paternalistic model of governance portraying the state as the guardian of the people. Toward the conclusion, he emphasizes democratic transition, international cooperation, and Indonesia’s global standing, invoking pride and collective dignity. Microstructural analysis of pronoun use, presuppositions, and metaphors demonstrates how rhetorical strategies align with broader ideological positioning. Conclusion: Prabowo’s first state speech address gives some theoretical contributions as the role of historical narratives in constructing collective cognition and sustaining political legitimacy. Originality: The originality of this research lies in its integrated application of van Dijk’s socio-cognitive framework to Prabowo Subianto’s 2025 State of the Nation Address which hasn’t been analyzed before, it combines textual and multimodal analysis to show how linguistic structures, visual cues, and rhetorical strategies work together to create political legitimacy and national identity.

Abstract

This research analyses the expression of metaphors in the Selected James Arthur's song In this research, the author analyzes the types of metaphors that are used based on Lakoff & Johnson's theory in James Arthur's song lyrics. By using the qualitative method, Metaphor is the most used figurative language to express sadness in James Arthur's song lyrics. Based on the analysis of 25 metaphors, it was found that conceptual metaphor was the most dominant type, with a frequency of 10 times (40%). Conceptual metaphors describe the relationship between one idea and another more concrete idea, such as describing life as a journey. This type helps the listener or reader understand abstract concepts in a more familiar and digestible way. Ontological metaphors took second place with a frequency of 9 times (36%). This type transforms an abstract or formless experience into something more concrete, such as emotions described as objects that can be touched or moved. The use of this metaphor often makes it easier for someone to visualize complex ideas. Meanwhile, orientational metaphors appeared 6 times (24%). Overall, these results suggest that conceptual metaphors are more widely used, perhaps due to their flexibility in conveying abstract ideas, whereas ontological and orientational metaphors complement the narrative more concretely and emotionally

Abstract

This study investigates the use of speech acts in Joe Biden’s 2023 speeches concerning the Hamas and Israel conflict, with a focus on identifying and interpreting the pragmatic functions of his language. Drawing on Austin’s and Searle’s framework of speech acts, the analysis categorizes utterances into locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts, with particular emphasis on illocutionary functions. The data were collected from Biden’s public addresses and analyzed qualitatively to determine the frequency and communicative purpose of each speech act category. The findings reveal that assertive speech acts dominate the discourse (64%), followed by directives (24%), declaratives (9%), and expressives (3%), with no commissive identified. This indicates Biden’s preference for asserting information and guiding responses rather than expressing emotions or making binding commitments. Comparative analysis with previous studies such as research on Netanyahu’s crisis rhetoric, Hamas representatives’ accusatory strategies, and speech acts in films shows both similarities and differences. While assertives consistently dominate across contexts, Biden’s avoidance of commissives and limited use of expressives distinguishes his rhetoric as cautious and diplomatic. The study concludes that speech act patterns in political discourse are strongly shaped by the speaker’s role, political stance, and global positioning, offering new insights into the intersection of pragmatics and international political communication.
