Abstract

This research examined how to analyze metaphors in the novel The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett. Using Lakoff and Johnson's conceptual metaphor theory, the study examined 50 metaphors to explain how nature-based imagery converts abstract emotional notions into real sensations. The findings showed that ontological metaphors, which account for 60% of the investigated data, successfully represent emotions like hope, despair, and joy. Structural and orientational metaphors help to depict personal growth and cognitive-emotional interaction. This study emphasized the instructional usefulness of metaphors in children's reading, indicating their ability to improve emotional literacy and cognitive understanding. By bridging the gap between natural imagery and abstract emotional states, The Secret Garden is an effective narrative tool for readers to develop emotional resilience and personal growth. Abstract

This research examines the metaphorical language in JKT48's Mahagita album to explore how figurative expressions convey deeper emotions and themes within the lyrics. By applying Lakoff and Johnson's Conceptual Metaphor Theory, the study classifies metaphors from selected songs into three types: structural, ontological, and orientational, each contributing to themes such as love, hope, struggle, and personal development. This qualitative descriptive analysis focuses on the lyrics of eleven songs to uncover how these metaphors enhance listeners' emotional engagement and comprehension. Findings indicate that ontological metaphors represent the largest segment, accounting for 47.5%, illustrating abstract feelings through tangible comparisons, such as “Hidup bagaikan pesawat kertas” (Life is like a paper airplane), which highlights the unpredictability and fragility of life. Through metaphor, the lyrics of JKT48 establish a profound emotional connection that resonates with listeners, demonstrating the effective application of figurative language in music to convey intricate emotions and concepts.

Abstract

This research analyses the expression of metaphors in the Selected James Arthur's song In this research, the author analyzes the types of metaphors that are used based on Lakoff & Johnson's theory in James Arthur's song lyrics. By using the qualitative method, Metaphor is the most used figurative language to express sadness in James Arthur's song lyrics. Based on the analysis of 25 metaphors, it was found that conceptual metaphor was the most dominant type, with a frequency of 10 times (40%). Conceptual metaphors describe the relationship between one idea and another more concrete idea, such as describing life as a journey. This type helps the listener or reader understand abstract concepts in a more familiar and digestible way. Ontological metaphors took second place with a frequency of 9 times (36%). This type transforms an abstract or formless experience into something more concrete, such as emotions described as objects that can be touched or moved. The use of this metaphor often makes it easier for someone to visualize complex ideas. Meanwhile, orientational metaphors appeared 6 times (24%). Overall, these results suggest that conceptual metaphors are more widely used, perhaps due to their flexibility in conveying abstract ideas, whereas ontological and orientational metaphors complement the narrative more concretely and emotionally
