Abstract

This article reports the findings of case study research on the deployment of gallery walks in English speaking classroom in the senior high schools in Indonesia. The research use case study design. Drawing on thematic analysis, empirical findings show that the students engaged actively in the topic they are interested and they could work collaboratively through small peer-led discussion. Empirical data also revealed that students could practice speaking through presenting and discussing their topics they chose in front of the class. This empirical evidence supports the use of gallery walks as a procedure in speaking program in purpose in engaging students in collaborative learning through the teacher scaffolding. Three important instructional implications can be drawn from the results of the study. Additionally, gallery walks can be used to engage students in speaking program during discussion and presentation activities. It helps students build their knowledge and speaking ability. Teacher can also bring many variety of topics to make students have more opportunity to explore broaden and deepen topics based on their interests. The future researchers can document the impact gallery walks have on students' speaking fluency and accomplishment in a different context. Keywords:  Engagement, Gallery Walks, Speaking

Abstract

This study aims to investigate the depiction of moral values embedded in one ELT textbook specifically for XII grade senior high school endorsed by Indonesian Ministry of Educational and Culture. The authors use Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) studies enlightened by Halliday’s (1978) Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) as data analysis. Since moral/character building becomes one of the priority programs prioritized by President Joko Widodo (Kemdikbud, 2017). Therefore, ELT textbooks must be in accordance with the program implied in the curricula. This critical discourse analysis focuses on analyzing visual objects and written texts adopting Kress and van Leuween’s (2006) visual grammar theory and Martin and white’s (2005) language appraisal theory to elaborate the moral values embedded with distinct genres in the textbook. The result shows that both visual and written texts with many genres in the textbook portraying a multitude of moral values. Thus, the implication of this study suggests both teachers and students should be able to acquire the necessary skills for critical thinking in reading and critical analysis of language sensitivity in order to understand the values. In addition, the analytical framework and the result of the research can be applied by the teachers and writers for explicit instruction, evaluation, and critical study of moral values in English language teaching. Keywords:  Critical Discourse Analysis; Moral Value; ELT Textbooks; Indonesian Moral Education

Studies on the domain of language education indicate that gender stereotypes still exist in teaching-learning media for instance English as a foreign language (EFL) textbook. Since the study within gender stereotypes in EFL textbook has dominantly compared the representation of female and male or men and women, this present study focused on investigating women representation in terms of domestic roles, hobbies, dressing, and social expectation in EFL textbook for Senior High School students published by Ministry of National Culture and Education (MONEC). This study used critical discourse analysis (CDA) to investigate both visual and textual that represent women in term of domestic roles, hobbies, dressing, and social expectation on the selected chapters in the EFL textbook mandated by MONEC as one of the teaching-learning media. Abstract

This study reports a qualitative research micro ethnographic study on Secondary School Students Experience in Reciprocal Teaching Strategy on Reading Comprehension through the Flipped Classroom. One research question will guide this study: What is the students' experience in Reciprocal Teaching Strategy on Reading Comprehension through the Flipped Classroom? The participants of this study were five students of secondary school. This research was conducted at one of the secondary school in West Java, Indonesia. The data used this study are semi-structural interview techniques. The data analysis uses Thematic Analysis of Braun and Clarke (2006), which consists of 6 stages, namely the stage of familiarizing with the data, generating initial code, searching for themes, reviewing themes, defining and naming themes, and producing the report. The findings report that learning reading comprehension using reciprocal teaching strategies with the flipped classroom method can encourage students' interest in remembering and developing a new vocabulary that they do not know. Furthermore, learning reading comprehension using reciprocal teaching strategies with the flipped classroom method involves students learning collaboratively, expanding their reading skills.  Finally, the finding shows that learning reading comprehension using the reciprocal teaching strategy with the flipped classroom engages students in reading activities and this activities can help students understand recount texts. Keywords:  Reciprocal Teaching strategy, Reading Comprehension, The Flipped Classroom, Students Experience

Abstract

The participants of this research are grade 10th students of audio-video engineering from one of vocational high school in Karawang, West Java, Indonesia. A chosen audio-video engineering journal was distributed in order for the students to explored and selected new important words and added the information they got from it to vocabulary self-collection strategy (VSS) chart. And also semi-structured interviews have completed to know their perception on vocabulary self-collection strategy during learning technical vocabulary using VSS (selecting and nominating new words). The result of this study showed that vocabulary self-collection strategy had positive impacts to students’ vocabulary size, their ability to comprehend text and the constraints that the students had during the VSS process.

Abstract

It is unquestionable that the availability of English language teaching and learning resources is often associated with the financial ability of an institution. Consequently, teachers at new institutions rarely enjoy vast resources. At Department of English Education, Faculty of Teachers Training and Education Unsika, for example, recent materials and ICT equipment are scarcely available. To cope with such conditions, teachers have to be creative and innovative. In this paper, we describe how teachers can cope with limited resources by utilizing free resources and networking. We also propose a triangle concept in which teachers, students and the management work together to cope with limited resources. A teacher has to move from simply a planner of lessons and a transmitter of knowledge to a facilitator of communication. Students have to be encouraged to be autonomous in learning. And, the management has to be informed about the selection of beneficial and affordable resources for English language teaching and learning.Keyword: Investigating Alternative Resources, Teaching, Learning
