Abstract

This study is discussing about the types of English imperative used in notices, the way of constructing English imperative and Indonesian imperative, and the reason of translation procedure are being applied. A Qualitative method is applied to answer the research problems. Data of the research were taken from some notices as the SL that found around Cahaya Madani Banten Boarding School along with their translation into Indonesian text (TL) used as the data source. The result shows that there are three types of imperative sentence of English imperative sentence in notices found in SMAN CMBBS translated from English into Indonesian: negative command, request, and positive command. Seeing from the process of imperative constructions of the SL, it can obviously be stated that it is formed by syntactical process, whereas in TL it is formed by morphological process that is by attaching the marker. The result also shows that there are four types of translation procedure used in this study. All of them are oriented towards the target language. Those procedures are: borrowing, modulation, transposition, and literal translation.

Abstract

The two dichotomous theories of positivism and interpretivism, respectively, underpin quantitative and qualitative methods to social research. Despite the fact that there are many other research paradigms, positivism and interpretivism are more commonly used in social research than other paradigms. These paradigms appear to be at odds not just in philosophical ideas, but also on a practical level, particularly in relation to research findings that are significant to educational policy-making. In this sense, there are still heated discussions about the research method that is more useful and transferrable to policy development. This study will look at the benefits and drawbacks of using qualitative and quantitative methodologies in educational policy research, specifically in the setting of English as a foreign language (EFL) in elementary school. The research begins with a philosophical introduction to social research, followed by a look at paradigmatic contestations between the two views, as well as their strengths and limits. The discussion continues with an explanation of current EFL policy developments, followed by a comparison of papers from respective quantitative and qualitative approaches, an assessment of the dominant research approach in EFL policy, and the ethical difficulties that must be addressed. The findings of this study show that no single approach can adequately address all facets of social processes. Each approach is tailored to certain goals and focuses, and neither can be used in place of the other. As a result, the most important consideration in deciding which technique to use in social research is the nature of the topics that will be explored.

Abstract

AbstractThis study aims at analyzing the students’ tendency toward domestication and foreignization in translating cultural terms. This study employed qualitative research through a case study. The participants were twelve postgraduate students of the English Department at one public university in Banten Province, Indonesia. They were the third semester students currently taking Advanced Translation class. The data was collected from the students’ translation works. They were asked to translate some cultural terms in Sindhunata’s Novel entitled ‘Anak Bajang Menggiring Angin’ from Indonesian Language to English. Observation was conducted while students were working. Next, an in-depth interview was conducted to find out translation techniques and students’ tendency in domesticating or foreignizing their translation versions. The result shows that the students tend to use domestication in their works (57%). The interview results also reveal that there are three considerations of choosing domestication among students: (1) they consider that the target readers are from different cultures; (2) they can transfer the equivalence meaning in the target language; and (3) they can apply appropriate translation techniques to overcome the cultural barriers.
