Abstract

This study explores students’ perceptions of team-based project learning integrated with Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) in an English Teaching Methodology class at Syiah Kuala University. The research framework, adapted from Kemendikbud, focuses on six key stages: questioning, designing, scheduling, monitoring, assessing, and evaluating. Data were gathered from 30 students through a structured questionnaire and analyzed quantitatively, using percentage and interval ranges to determine perceptions. The results show that students held overwhelmingly positive views of team-based projects, with mean scores consistently falling in the ‘Agree’ to ‘Strongly Agree’ categories. Students valued the collaborative nature of the projects, which helped them develop critical skills such as critical thinking, creativity, and time management. The integration of TPACK further enriched their learning experience by facilitating meaningful application of technology in teaching. These findings suggest that team-based projects, when integrated with TPACK and guided by a structured framework, can significantly improve learning outcomes in English language education. Future research should investigate the long-term impacts of these approaches and address potential implementation challenges to enhance their effectiveness.

Abstract

Students’ learning outcomes of vocabulary mastery in reading comprehension at junior high schools in Banda Aceh, Indonesia, are relatively low. To tackle the issue, the Scrabble Game Technique (hereafter, SGT) is hoped to be a game-changer. This study aims to investigate EFL students’ learning outcomes through the use of the SGT in learning English vocabulary through narrative texts to seventh-grade students at a junior high school. The aspects assessed for each type of vocabulary included nouns, verbs, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, and conjunctions. The research design was quantitative with pre-experimental research that used a one-group pre-test post-test design to measure the students’ learning outcomes after three treatments with the SGT. A total of 30 seventh-grade students were selected by purposive sampling. The instrument used to collect data was a test, comprising 30 questions in total, with 18 multiple choices, 6 fill-in-the-blanks, and 6 matching-the-word. The tests were further analyzed using the right-hand t-test after the pre-requisite test was met. It was found that the percentage of mastery of nouns and verbs in the post-test was better than the pre-test, with the improvement of nouns at 93%, verbs at 91%, pronouns at 84%, adverbs at 72%, adjectives at 71%, and conjunctions at 71%. Furthermore, the t-count was 19.68 with p = 0.05, dk = 29, and t-table = 1.70. It was concluded that students’ learning outcomes were better after being taught through the SGT.

Abstract

Learning English at an early age is believed to lead to a significant improvement in children's language skills. Parental involvement is thought to have a positive influence on children's development in learning English as a second/foreign language. A preliminary study found that Chinese parents are actively involved in helping their children learn English. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the types of parental involvement of Chinese parents and their roles in helping their children learn English in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. The focus of this study is on six types of parental involvement (parenting, communicating, volunteering, supervising children's learning at home, decision making, and collaborating with the community) and five roles of parents (motivators, models, facilitators, sources of knowledge, and coordinators) in children's education as proposed by Epstein (2011). The participants of this study are ten Chinese parents, seven mothers and three fathers, who have enrolled their children for early English language learning in one of the private courses in Banda Aceh, Indonesia. This study used a qualitative approach and was conducted through interviews. The findings show that Chinese parents engage in four types of parental involvement: parenting, communication, monitoring children's learning at home, and decision making. They also fulfil five parental roles in their children's language learning: motivators, models, facilitators, knowledge sources and coordinators. As this study focuses on parental involvement in children's English learning at primary school level, it is suggested that further research should aim to examine parental involvement in children's English learning at different levels of education, such as middle school or senior high school.

Abstract

Swearing is a linguistic phenomenon that serves multiple functions in communication, including the expression of emotions, reinforcement of social bonds, and intensification of speech. The novel Heartbeat by Jealoucy features characters who frequently engage in swearing across various contexts. However, there is limited research examining the types and motivations of swearing in contemporary literary works, particularly in modern novels. This study aims to identify the types of swearing (Ljung, 2011) employed by the characters and to analyze the motivations behind their usage (Andersson & Trudgill, 1992). Using a qualitative descriptive approach, the research involves close reading and note-taking to examine instances of swearing within the text. The data were categorized into types of swearing and the motivations behind swearing. The analysis focuses on the context, function, and underlying reasons for each instance. The findings reveal that the characters use swearing 44 times throughout the novel, with expletive interjections identified as the most frequently used type. Psychological motivations, such as expressing anger, frustration, or surprise, emerge as the most dominant reasons for swearing. These findings suggest that swearing contributes significantly to character development and the authenticity of dialogue in fictional narratives. Future research may investigate how swearing differs across literary genres or how it affects readers’ perceptions.

Abstract

In Indonesian digital space, recently, there has been a noticeable increase in Filipino gaming content creators speaking in Indonesian. This phenomenon is interesting because it shows that the digital platforms have become key spaces for intercultural communication, identity expression, and language interaction in modern society. However, research on Indonesian speech acts used by foreign speakers, particularly Filipino content creators, is still very limited. Therefore, this study aims to examine how Filipino content creators perform Indonesian speech acts in digital communication. Several Indonesians and Filipinos creators, who is communicating in the digital space, were selected as the data source due to their high audience engagement and consistent use of Indonesian in digital communication. Such communication practice makes them appropriate representatives of cross-cultural language practices in online environments. Through a qualitative analysis, the specific eight hours of video data were transcribed and categorized according to Austin and Searle’s speech act framework (locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary). Such categorization is displayed into tables to identify patterns of use. This systematic analytical procedure enhances interpretive reliability and reveals recurring pragmatic patterns within naturally occurring discourse. The study identified a total of 97 speech acts produced by Filipino content creators. The analysis shows that Filipino content creators tend to use illocutionary speech acts with harsher language and a sarcastic style. Furthermore, content creators also use locutionary acts that employ descriptive sentences and informal or casual language. Meanwhile, in perlocutionary acts, content creators generally receive positive responses from their audience, which is most likely influenced by the entertaining and light-hearted nature of their videos. These findings indicate that Filipino content creators, despite being non-native Indonesian speakers, demonstrate strong pragmatic awareness by strategically performing social actions, managing interpersonal relations, and sustaining audience engagement. Their speech reflects how digital contexts facilitate pragmatic experimentation, enabling second-language users to adapt linguistic resources to interactional goals such as persuasion, rapport-building, and identity construction. This study contributes to the development of cross-cultural pragmatic studies and can serve as a reference for teaching Indonesian as a foreign language in the digital era by emphasizing the pedagogical value of authentic digital discourse in fostering learners’ pragmatic competence and intercultural communicative skills in real-world communication.

Abstract

In oral cultures, language is considered a vital means of transmitting social norms, values, and local wisdom to the next generation. This study discusses the Randai tradition in wedding ceremonies in Aneuk Jamee, Aceh, Indonesia, and reflects on the role of figurative language in conveying local wisdom. Based on Minangkabau culture and its acculturation into Acehnese culture, Randai incorporates poetic language and proverbs, as well as symbols associated with artistic and moral values. The research employed an anthropological approach and was conducted in Ladang Village, South Aceh, Indonesia, using observation, audio recordings, and in-depth interviews with five elders in the community. The results revealed that the local wisdom embedded in the figurative language includes: harmony on ‘politeness and thoughtful speech’, and ‘social equality’, education on ‘responsibility and commitment’, and ‘obedience to custom and discipline’ (5 metaphors), cooperation on ‘gotong royong’ and ‘unity and mutual support’ (1 hyperbole), spirituality on ‘humility and modesty’ (1 litotes), and another in spirituality on ‘optimism and hope’ (1 paradox). This tradition not only reflects the shared values and cultural continuity but also functions as a living course, communicating ethics, emotional intelligence, and intergenerational respect. In a modern context, it strengthens group identity while encouraging younger generations to uphold ancestral wisdom. The use of such devices showed that Randai is not just a form of entertainment but also a medium of culture and education, strengthening the Aneuk Jamee community’s moral and Islamic values and identity, especially among the younger generation of Acehnese.

Abstract

This study was designed and aimed at identifying the awareness and practices of multicultural awareness among primary school teachers in Malaysia. It attempts to identify their awareness of multicultural concept when dealing with their students and staffs at their school. This awareness was measured by three variables: awareness, knowledge and skills. A number of 41 questions which inquired about the three variables were distributed randomly to 50 primary school teachers in Malaysia. These teachers were from three ethic types of primary schools: Tamil, Chinese and Malay primary schools. The reason for choosing the three different mainstream schools was because they represented the main different multicultural practices in the country. From these participants, five teachers were selected for further interviews to obtain richer data. The findings revealed that the awareness of multicultural education among primary school teachers was still at the medium level. Thus, this study suggests that there should be a multicultural awareness campaign at all schools in Malaysia in order to ensure that each student, no matter from what backgrounds they are from, feel they are part of the Malaysian society as a whole. The study also found that the awareness should start from the home, environment and peer and through parental guidance because school is a bridge between home and the society that will form one Malaysian society to achieve vision 2020.

Abstract

This research aims to find out whether Herringbone Technique can developEFL students’ reading comprehension or not, especially in finding the main idea and supporting details in a recount text. The literature notes that Herringbone is known to be one of the techniques that can helpstudents to find important information and main idea in a text by seeking for answers on six comprehension questions on a diagram, viewed such as a fish’s skeleton. The sample of this research was 30 second grade junior high school students. The researchers employed simple random sampling to choose the sample. It further used the quantitative experimental approach with the pre-experimental design in the form of one group pre-test-post-test design.Pre-test was given before treatments, while post-test was given after the students were taught reading by using the Herringbone Technique. Each pre-test and post-test consisted of ten questions. The statistical formulas were used to analyze the data from the students tests’ scores. The mean score of pre-test was 59 and the post-test was 76. Futhermore, the result of t-test was 10.15, while the critical value of 0.05 significant level was 2.045, with the degree of freedom of 29. Since t-test (10.15) was higher than t-table (2.045), this study concludes that this technique could increase the EFL students’ reading comprehension.Despite in practice the researchers found that this technique decreased the students’ efforts in note-taking, however it did not inhibited them in obtaining improved scores in their reading tests.
