Abstract

Abstract

Nano-MgO was synthesized via a nitrate–citrate sol–gel combustion method, in which magnesium nitrate acted as the oxidizing precursor and citric acid served simultaneously as the chelating agent and organic fuel. The formation of a homogeneous Mg–citrate coordination network enabled controlled gelation, while the auto-combustion process produced a porous MgO matrix composed of ultrafine crystallites. Calcination at 800 °C promoted phase consolidation, removal of organic residues, and enhanced long-range atomic ordering. X-ray diffraction confirmed the exclusive formation of the cubic periclase phase (fm3m), with no detectable hydroxide or carbonate impurities. Crystallite size analysis yielded an average size of 16.03 nm based on the Scherrer equation, whereas the Williamson–Hall method produced a larger value of 25.44 nm with a microstrain of 5.37 × 10-4. indicating minimal lattice distortion. The discrepancy between the two size estimates reflects the contribution of microstrain effect not considered in the Scherrer approach. Overall, the synthesized nano-MgO exhibits high crystallinity, narrow crystallite size distribution, and excellent structural stability, highlighting its potential for catalytic, gas-sensing, and high-temperature functional applications. These results demonstrate that the sol–gel combustion method is an efficient and reliable strategy for producing nanocrystalline MgO with well-controlled structural characteristics.

Abstract

This study investigates the surface chemical characteristics of ZnO-functionalized activated carbon (AC) derived from oil palm empty fruit bunches (OPEFB) using Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Activated carbon was prepared through carbonization at 400 °C followed by chemical activation using KOH. ZnO functionalization was performed via the sol–gel method with a nominal ZnO loading of 10 wt% relative to AC. FTIR analysis revealed dominant absorption bands corresponding to O–H stretching (~3430 cm⁻¹), C=O stretching (~1630 cm⁻¹), and C–O vibrations (~1050–1100 cm⁻¹), indicating the presence of oxygen-containing surface functional groups. The appearance of a characteristic Zn–O vibrational band in the 450–600 cm⁻¹ region confirmed the incorporation of ZnO within the composite structure. Minor peak shifts and variations in band intensity observed after ZnO modification suggest changes in the local chemical environment and possible interactions between ZnO nanoparticles and oxygen-containing functional groups. However, FTIR analysis alone does not provide definitive confirmation of specific interfacial bonding configurations. The results indicate that KOH activation preserved reactive oxygenated functionalities that remained stable after ZnO incorporation. The coexistence of porous AC characteristics and ZnO-associated vibrational features suggests that the synthesized AC/ZnO composite possesses surface chemical properties relevant for adsorption-assisted photocatalytic applications. This work demonstrates the potential valorization of OPEFB biomass into functional carbon-based hybrid materials.

Abstract

Palm oil fuel ash (POFA) is one of the main by-products of the palm oil industry, predominantly composed of silica (SiO2) and various other metal oxides. Nano-POFA (P1) was synthesized using a top-down approach via high-energy ball milling process at a rotational speed of 1300 rpm for 1 hour using 4 mm-diameter milling balls. The X-ray diffraction patterns revealed that the dominant crystalline phases were Quartz (SiO2) and Mullite (Al6Si2O13), accompanied by minor phases such as Cristobalite (SiO2), Hematit (Fe2O3), Calcite (CaCO3), CaO, and Al2O3. The XRD analysis results of samples P0 (without ball milling) and P1 (1 hour of ball milling) revealed a significant decrease in peak intensity and peak broadening after 1 hour of the milling process. This phenomenon indicates partial amorphization and crystal fragmentation. The average crystallite size decreased from 92.14 nm in sample P0 to 47.52 nm in sample P1. These results indicate that the high-energy ball milling process induces lattice distortion, structural disorder, and amorphization within the Si-O framework of the POFA. The Williamson-Hall analysis indicated an increase in microstrain from ԑ=3.38 x 10-3 to ԑ=1.227 x 10-2. The structural transformations increase surface defect density and reactivity, signifying nano-POFA’s potential as material heterogenous catalyst for related chemical processes

Abstract

This study aims to determine the influence of Visionary Leadership, Teacher Competence, and Learning Innovation on Education Quality, both partially and simultaneously, in private high school teachers in Tangerang City. This study uses a quantitative approach with a correlational method. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed to 115 selected respondents using sampling techniques, then analyzed using analytical prerequisite tests (normality, homogeneity, and linearity) as well as simple and multiple linear regression analysis with the help of SPSS 25. The results showed that Visionary Leadership had a positive and significant effect on the Quality of Education (?yx1 = 0.703; count 9.761 > table 1.981), Teacher Competence had a positive and significant effect on the Quality of Education (?yx2 = 0.162; count 2.008 > table 1.981), and Learning Innovation had a positive and significant effect on the Quality of Education (?yx3 = 0.035; count 1.987 > table 1.981). Simultaneously, these three variables also have a significant effect on the Quality of Education with a Fcal value of 89.794 at a significance level of 0.000 < 0.05, forming a regression equation Y = 0.703X1 + 0.162X2 + 0.035X3. Visionary Leadership proved to be the most dominant variable that affects the Quality of Education compared to the other two variables. These findings confirm that improving the quality of education in private high schools will be more effective if it is focused on strengthening the visionary leadership of school principals, without neglecting teacher competency improvement and continuous learning innovation.
