Abstract

Code mixing can occur anywhere. Mixed code is a mixture of two or more languages. Code mixing occurs when a speaker using a language dominantly supports a speech inserted with other language elements. This paper is conducted to get data about code mixing, especially in delivered by the presenter in the Hijab Traveling in Trans7 television program. The research used descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected from utterances delivered by the presenter in the Hijab Traveling in Trans7 television program. Process of analyzing the types of mixed code the writer used Suwito's theory. The results are 15 data found which the writer has classified into linguistic elements include the insertion of words, phrases, clauses, repetition of words, and idiom. Proses of analyzing the causes of mixed code the writer used the theory of Basir. The results are found 9 data. The result indicated that presenters on the Hijab Traveling in Trans7 television program often intervene in code. Based on all the analysis of data the writer can conclude that the sentences uttered by the presenter of Hijab Traveling in Trans7 television program prove that presenter often use mixed codes because the presenter can speak more than one language and the presenter has extensive knowledge.

Abstract

As the objective of EFL teaching is to help students to communicate fluently in the target language, teachers should provide authentic models of language use for every level and age. To hit the target we should focus not only on linguistic, but also on literary and cultural elements. Since fairy tales offer these elements, they are highly beneficial to use in EFL teaching programs, especially for young learners. This objective of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of teaching English pronunciation through fairy tale media. This research was conducted at SMPS PGRI Pondokgede class 8-3. The writer has conducted field research for 1 month. Some data was taken through observation, process, and post-learning and teaching activities. This paper contains ways to improve students’ English pronunciation by providing Thumbelina and Pinocchio fairy tales. The result of this study indicated that: (1) teaching English pronunciation trough fairy tale is effective to increase students’ pronunciation (2) students become easier to understand the subject matter and increase their English vocabulary, and (3) students become more active and confident when reading texts or fairy tales by showing good pronunciation.

Abstract

This research was conducted to determine the communication strategy used by the local guide when guiding foreigners in museum kesejarahan Jakarta, especially the types of strategy in communication and the function of each strategy for the local guide to solving their problem in the museum. Communication strategy is the important thing that the guide needed to build a good conversation with the foreigners' visitor there. The objective of this study is to find out the most dominant type of strategy in communication and the functions of each strategy when the guide faced the problem when guiding, the writer used the descriptive qualitative method. The data collection was done by collecting the data from observation and the conversation problem with each foreign tourist. Primary data collected from direct field observations and interviews. The writer analyzes some conversations that can be shown as the problem faced by the tour guide. This research used theory by Celce-Murcia et al’s (1995) model of communication strategies is considered as the most complete and detailed. The writer divided communication strategies into five main categories. They are avoidance, achievement, stalling, self-monitoring strategies, and interactional strategies. Results showed that there were 5 types of communication strategy and The dominant of those theories was an interaction strategy. Problems that faced by the local guide are different culture, limited vocabulary, shyness, difficult accent, too attached to the modules being thought

Abstract

Penelitian ini berkaitan dengan penggunaan media siber sintaksis. Dalam hal ini, peneliti telah melakukan penelitian tentang berita utama di akun Twitter @detikcom. Akun Twitter @detikcom adalah akun resmi dari situs www.detik.com. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan jenis-jenis kalimat dan mengkategorikan jenis-jenis kata dalam akun Twitter@detikcom timeline. Dalam penelitian ini, peneliti menggunakan metode deskriptif kualitatif. Hasil dianalisis menggunakan pendekatan sintaksis. Dalam pengumpulan data, peneliti menggunakan penelitian bahasa sinkron dengan mengamati fenomena bahasa pada waktu tertentu. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa ada empata jenis kalimat di akun Twitter@detikcom berdasarkan struktur sintaksis, yaitu 93 kalimat lengkap, 7 kalimat lengkap, 4 kalimat ambigu dan 13 kalimat ellipsis. Berkaitan dengan 13 kategori jenis kata yang diusulkan oleh Harimurti Kridalaksana, peneliti menemukan 5 kategori yaitu kata benda, kata kerja, kata depan, kata sifat dan kata keterangan. Kata Kunci: sintaksis, berita utama, twitter

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to analyze students' perceptions of YouTube as authentic teaching material in online classes. The research method uses qualitative. Participants were taken from the Grammar and Speaking classes as many as 50 students from the English Language Program at Universitas Indraprasta Jakarta. Data were collected using interviews and questionnaires. Data analysis used interactive model analysis form Miles and Huberman that were the stages of data reduction, data display, and concluding. The results show that YouTube can become authentic material if it has content, plot, duration, and originality that suit the needs and learning objectives. Videos on YouTube also have quality and clear sound. However, YouTube is not only assumed to be the main authentic teaching material, but it will be better if it is equipped with journals, websites and books. The results of this study have implications that teachers must know the needs of students regarding teaching materials and videos that are made should be by the level of learning needs

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to determine the influence of celebrity endorsement and brand image on purchasing decisions for Hijab Elzatta among students in Jakarta. The data were obtained from distributing questionnaires to 34 respondents as a sample using the Likert scale. The data were processed and analyzed using multiple linear regression. The results of the R2 test are 0.459 or 46%, meaning that the purchasing decision variable is explained by the trust and quality variables by 46%. The results of the F test show that f count 13,127> f tabel 3,30, thus simultaneously the celebrity endorsement variable and brand image have a positive and significant influence on the purchasing decision of Elzatta Hijab in students in Jakarta. While the t test results show a significant effect of price on purchasing decisions as evidenced by t count 2.445> ttable 1.690, a significant effect of brand image on purchasing decisions on Elzatta Hijab buyers is evidenced from tcount4.037> t table 1.690. Then the regression equation is obtained Y = 5.742 + 0.236 + 0.422. This means a constant value of 5.742, this shows that if celebrity endorsement and brand image are ignored, then the purchase decision of Elzatta Hijab buyers is 5.742. The regression coefficient of the price variable is 0.236, meaning that each increase in celebrity endorsement is 1 unit, it will be followed by an increase in purchasing decisions for Hijab Elzatta buyers by 0.236. The regression coefficient for brand image variables is 0.422, meaning that each increase in brand image is 1 unit, it will be followed by an increase in purchasing decisions for buyers. Elzatta's Hijab is 0.422. The results of this study are that celebrity endorsement and brand image have a significant effect on the purchasing decisions of Hijab Ellzata buyers among students in Jakarta.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the embodiment of cultural values in English textbooks for junior high school students. This research used a qualitative approach with a content analysis method. The research data was in the form of a collection of discourse texts in the form of monologues, dialogues and exercises. The data were taken from two books entitled Scaffolding and In Focus, published by the Book Center of the Ministry of National Education. It is grade X. The data analysis procedure used in this research was qualitative content analysis. The process of validity was done through credibility, transferability, triangulation, dependability, and confirmability. The results showed that the dominant cultural value was the optimistic value of 43%. Then followed by the brotherhood value of 23.80%, the social value of 19% and the freedom value of 14%. Each cultural value found also describes some more specific values. The value of freedom contains character values, namely the value of independence and hard work. The value of brotherhood contains character values, namely friendliness and responsible; the optimistic value contains character values, namely courage, creativity, discipline, and curiosity, and social values contain character values, namely cooperation. This study concluded that English textbooks had the important value of increasing students’ character as cultural values.

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to Analyze of The Main characters in Storyline The Film "Nanti Kita Cerita Tentang Hari Ini" directed by Angga Dwimas Sasongko. Before collecting data, first watched movies and read novels. This research method is descriptive qualitative. This film was adapted from novel by Marcella Febritrisia Putri. The first Indonesian to reach 2 million viewers in 2020. Film has won various awards. Storyline of this film tells the story of a family trying to maintain understanding and harmony. Conflicts in family are caused by in the past secrets that have not been revealed. This 121-minute film tells the story of a family of five, parents and three children. In my opinion interesting characters in this film are Narendra as father and Awan as youngest child. Narendra's character has endured traumatic feelings for years, making him seem overly possessive and indulgent to Awan, but on the other hand, Awan's character is actually disrespectful to her parents. Therefore, I conducted an analysis of two main characters. The approach is a literary study that has a big role for readers in accepting, experiencing and understanding literary works.

Abstract

There are many researchers who have been discussing EFL learners’ perceptions on the implementation of online digital technology (ODT), but there are few of them who specifically investigate their familiarity in using technology when applying project-based approach. This research analysis students’ attitudes in using ODT to improve their speaking skills and how familiar students use ODT to accomplish a project in a Speaking Class. Because the approach of learning English in this research is PBL with ODT, the students must be familiar with the technology in order to create some projects assigned. Therefore, they had to own smartphones or laptops, and familiar with very basic ODT before beginning the program. 24 students of Speaking class were selected and trained to pedagogically show their awareness towards the learning approach and the use of ODT. The researcher divided them into some smaller groups to work together to improve their projects by looking at their learning approach with technology. The result of the posttest indicated their positive attitudes towards the implementation of PBL in the Speaking class with digital technology and the increasing familiarity of using ODT. They realized that they needed to create, and evaluate the results of their project by themselves during online learning to improve their speaking skills. Abstract

This study focuses on the learning strategies used by lecture in teaching descriptive writing in overcoming Learning at Sumbawa Islamic High School. The purpose of this study were; 1) to find out the challenges faced by EFL learners with low literacy in improving their descriptive writing skills, and 2) the perceptions of EFL learners with low literacy regarding the use of translanguaging strategies in improving their descriptive writing skills.  This research is qualitative research. Researchers used two instruments to obtain the required data, namely: observation and interviews. Based on the data obtained from the second instrument used, the following findings were obtained. First, The challenges faced by EFL learners with low literacy has five category; first, limitation of vocabulary, second complex grammar and sentence structures, third language used, fourth, learning resources, and fifth, strategy used. Language used by the teacher has the huge challenge in their learning process of descriptive writing of students of Sumbawa Islamic High School. Second, The perceptions of EFL learners with low literacy has three category; first, learning process, second, learning motivation, and third, maintaining native language. The perception of the learners regarding used translanguaging has positive contribution in teaching and learning process of descriptive writing of students of Sumbawa Islamic High School.
