Abstract

Late adolescents have a high interest in establishing relationships with the opposite sex along with a great desire to be accepted by the surrounding environment. This encourages late teens to focus on the concept of the ideal body, especially women. The concept of the ideal body is closely related to body image. This research used an incidental sampling technique and involved 384 respondents who were late teenage girls who used Instagram, aged 18-21 years. Data collection used three scales, namely the body image scale and the social comparison scale. The analysis technique used in this research is simple linear regression analysis. The research results show that there is an influence of social comparison on body image in late adolescent girls who use Instagram (0.000ρ < .05).

Abstract

This study examines the influence of interpersonal communication on intimacy in individuals undergoing long-distance marriages (LDM) with love language as a mediating variable. The method used was a quantitative correlational study with 233 participants. The research instruments included the Interpersonal Communication Inventory (ICI), Personal Assessment of Intimacy in Relationships (PAIR), and the Five Love Language Scale modified to suit the LDM context. Data analysis was performed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) with bootstrapping through SmartPLS. The results indicated that interpersonal communication had a very significant effect on intimacy with an R² of 0.972. All aspects of love language significantly mediated the relationship (t-statistic > 1.96; p < 0.05). Physical Touch was the most dominant mediator (original sample value 0.364), followed by Words of Affirmation (0.202), Quality Time (0.195), Receiving Gifts (0.129), and Acts of Service (0.057). These findings emphasize the importance of effective interpersonal communication and the application of love languages in maintaining intimacy in long-distance couples. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed in the context of marriage counseling and psychological interventions.

Abstract

Public speaking competence is needed in various interactions between people, both in personal and social contexts, including leadership, business, religion, law, education, and others. In the field of education, for example, the need for public speaking skills especially for students is very necessary. The ability to speak in public is very helpful in increasing students' self-confidence which can support their performance both in education and social life. This ability is not only to encourage students to excel in the academic field within their school, but also to excel in other fields outside of school. As an implementation in helping to improve students' public speaking skills, the FISIP USU service team has carried out public speaking training service activities in one of the schools in Medan City, namely SMA Al Washliyah 1 in September 2023. The service team provided provision for students to be more capable of communicating in front of the public. Participants received public speaking materials and some of them practiced public speaking directly in a competition. This service activity is a form of contribution to the implementation of the fourth point of Sustainable Development Goals, namely Quality Education.
