Abstract

The purpose of this research were to (1) see the listening strategies used by the students of English department UNP, (2) see the strategies used by the students with higher test score (successful listeners) and the strategies used by the students with lower test score (unsuccessful listeners). The design of this research was descriptive research with population were the second-year students who have taken the Listening 1 subject. The sample of this research was the K4 class with 19 members. The instrument used was the SILL questionnaire which has 50 statements. The result of this research showed that the strategies used by the students from the most to the least were metacogntive strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies, affective strategies, social strategies, and memory strategies. Students with higher test score were shown to use metacognitive strategies with high intensity, followed by cognitive strategies, affective strategies, social strategies, memory strategies and compensation strategies. Students with lower test score were shown to use the metacognitive strategies in medium intensity, followed by affective strategies, compensation strategies, social strategies, cognitive strategies and memory strategies. What differ both students’ category was the intensity of the strategies usage

Abstract

Self-efficacy is necessary for EFL student in controlling their own motivation, behavior, and social environments toward their language learning. Anxiety obstructs the student in improving their language skill in language learning. This research deals with the correlation between self-efficacy and listening anxiety experienced by EFL college students at English Department, Universitas Negeri Padang. The purpose of this research is to investigate the students’ self-efficacy and whether it is in correlation with their listening anxiety. The population of the research is obtained from all of the 2019 students (the second year students) who have already have taken Basic Listening course in their first year of study. This study is conducted in correlational research by using random sampling. The researcher collects data by using two instruments: listening self-efficacy questionnaire and listening anxiety questionnaire. The result of this study showed there are correlation between EFL students’ listening self-efficacy and their listening anxiety.  The correlation between the two aspects is low and it is in the same direction. On the other hand, students’ speaking anxiety and self-efficacy stand in the medium level. They are not high and also not low.

Abstract

This paper aims to  explain how to teach writing comparison contrast essay by using Venn diagram. Comparison contrast essay is an essay that compares and contrasts two different topics focusing on the similarities and differences. The most common problem faced by students in writing comparison contrast essay is stating and organizing ideas to start writing. Considering this problem, teachers need to apply a teachnique in teaching and learning process. Venn diagram is a model that can be used to help students in stating and organizing the ideas in order to start writing. There are three stages in writing comparison contrast essay (Oshima and Hogue, 1999) : prewriting, planning (outlining), writing and revising. Venn diagram is used in the planning stages which help the students to state and organize ideas. In addition, this model also help the students to visualize the concept of comparison contrast essay.

Abstract

AbstrakPenelitian ini bertujuan untuk: 1. mengetahui persepsi siswa SMP Darul Hikmah Padang Panjang terhadap kegiatan English week dari aspek kognitif, afektif dan konatif, 2. Menemukan faktor-faktor yang mempengaruhi persepsi siswa SMP Darul Hikmah Padang Panjang terhadap kegiatan English week. Penelitian inidilaksanakan di SMP Darul Hikmah Padang Panjang dengan jumlah siswasebanyak 89 orang. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan menyebarkan angket dan meminta siswa mengisi angket berdasarkan petunjuk yang diberikan lalu mewawancarai beberapa siswa untuk mendapatkan informasi yang lebih rinci. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa siswa mempunyai persepsi yang sangat bagus terhadap kegiatan English Week.Key Words: English Week, Perception, Darul Hikmah

Abstract

This study aimed was to discover the level and the type of speaking anxiety among the student in speaking, and also to discover the correlation between speaking anxiety and their speaking ability at second-year students of English Department UNP. The correlation research was used in this research. The person who takes part inactivity of this research was 20 students of speaking class at English Department UNP in the academic year 2018. Questionnaire and interview were utilized in this examination to measure the correlation between the two aspects. The questionnaire was Foreign Language Anxiety Classroom Scale (FLCAS). Fear of negative evaluation was identified as the type of speaking anxiety, and the level of their speaking anxiety categorized at a medium level. After calculated the two aspects using SPSS 2.0, the result shows there is a negative correlation between students' speaking anxiety and their speaking ability. And it is correlated at -0.498 which means the correlation is in a moderate correlation.

Abstract

This research aims to discover SMK students’ ability in using grammar, especially sentence structures, in producing oral procedure text. The design of this research was descriptive research. The population was 125 grade twelve students majoring in the food and beverage service study program at SMKN 9 Padang who were divided into 6 classes: XII JB 1, XII JB 2, XII JB 3, XII JB 4, XII Ps 1 and XII Ps 2. The sample was obtained by using random cluster sampling technique which resulted in XII Ps 1 class which had 28 students. The data were collected by giving them a speaking test to produce oral procedure text. The result showed that students’ ability in using declarative sentence in producing oral procedure text was in poor level (85,71%). Meanwhile, students’ ability in using imperative sentence in producing oral procedure text was in good level (46,43%).

Abstract

Discovery Learning as one of the methods proposed by the 2013 curiculum are  suggested learning methods for teachers to increase students' activeness and critical thinking. However, discovery learning also has its downside such as it can be a very time-consuming method. This advantages and disadvantages resulted in microteaching students having different perceptions on the discovery learning. The purpose of this study is to describe students’ perceptions of discovery learning in microteaching class at English Department, Universitas Negeri Padang. This research used descriptive quantitative research. The sample for this research was 56 microteaching students of English Department in Universitas Negeri Padang. The data collection technique used in this research was a questionnaire with 6 indicators through google form application. Therefore, the results of this study showed that the majority of microteaching students in English Department had a positive or good perception of the implementation of discovery learning. The students agree that the use of discovery learning motivates students to be more active in class, improves students’ critical thinking, interpretation, communication, collaboration skills. However, the microteaching students still encounter obstacles to encourage the students to answer the question and be active in the class.

Abstract

Dalam pengajaran Bahasa Inggris di Indonesia, kemampuan menyimak (Listening) merupakan kemampuan berbahasa yang penting akan tetapi, di sekolah kegiatan menyimak sering kali diabaikan oleh sebagian besar guru Bahasa Inggris.. Permasalahan yang biasanya dialami oleh siswa adalah mereka kesulitan dalam menyeleksi informasi saat menyimak dikarenakan kecepatan dari materi rekaman yang diperdengarkan serta mereka juga tidak bisa menanyakan secara langsung informasi yang siswa kurang mengerti saat menyimak atau listening.. Salah satu teknik yang biasa dipilih dalam membantu siswa saat listening adalah dengan menggunakan Cornell Note Taking Technique. Teknik Cornell Note taking mempunyai sistem yang terorganisir sehingga membantu siswa dalam membuat catatan yang effektif. Catatan yang terorganisir dan effektif akan menolong siswa dalam memahami informasi saat menyimak. Selain itu dalam penggunaan teknik ini, siswa juga diajarkan untuk bekerja aktif dan berfikir kritis. Cornell note taking juga terkenal sebagai teknik dalam mencatat yang dapat membantu siswa dalam memahami materi saat listening dengan lebih mudah.Key Words : Listening, Comprehension, Cornell Note taking

Abstract

In general, the students of English Department have the ability to write English well. However, there are still some aspects that must be consideredin writing. Therefore, this study aimed to look at the extent to which students use the sentencestypes in writing an essay. Another aim was to analyze the problems occurred in using the sentencestypes. This research was a descriptive study with research subjects were 22essays of Education 2 Class students in year 2014/2015. Data were collected by analyzing sentences in the essay which were the result of semester exam ofa writing class. Based on the research, there were four sentencestypesin the students’ writing: simple, compound, complex, and compound-complex sentences. Based on the results of the study, it was found that simple sentence was the most sentence types commonly written by the students in writing, by contrast, compound-complex sentencewas the least sentence types written by the student. In addition, there were two problems that occurred to write the sentence types, ie run-on and fragment. Both of these problems were found in all parts of the essay: introduction, main body and conclusion. By doing so, it is expected to the lecturers to pay more attention to the use of different sentence types in students’ writing.

Abstract

Senior High School students commonly have difficulty in listening to a descriptive text. It’s due to the learners feel most threatened, panic, and they worry about accuracy in listening. In listening activity the teachers usually ask the students to only listen to the audio rather than make note taking while listening. Whereas, note taking is very useful to do while listening because they will catch the idea of what the speaker says. In addition, note taking will make the students easier in listening descriptive text so that it can be improve their motivation.
