Abstract

Nike is a terminology used by Gorontalo local community to name schooling of minuscule amphidromous goby fish that has a limited appearance in Gorontalo waters. Understanding the biological performance of Nike fish is vital for implementing management and conservation strategy. This study aims to analyze daily recruitment and to determine growth patterns of Nike fish population in nature. Sampling was conducted in the Gorontalo waters during March, April, and May 2018 using a fish net with a mesh size of 0.5 inches. The duration of the appearance of Nike schooling in waters varies every month. The number of fish samples collected each month in this study ranged from 150 to 300 individuals. This study reveals that body color diversity and morphology of Nike fish strongly alleged to depend on where and how long they appear in the waters. Based on the daily recruitment pattern, Nike fish population distributed in Gorontalo waters is predicted to consist of individuals from multi-generation with an average length range of 1.848–2.805 cm. During the sampling time, a positive allometric growth pattern indicated by the population.

Abstract

Regarding exploitation and optimizing fisheries resources management in Tomini Bay, the Layang scad fish (Decapterus russelli, Ruppell 1830) is one of the small pelagic fishes inhabiting the bay that still lacks biological information. The species becomes the main target commodity for local fishers as it is commonly consumed as a protein source for coastal communities. This study aimed to determine the length-weight relationships and the growth pattern of Layang fish caught by fishers from Tomini Bay. The samples were collected once per month at Gorontalo City Fish Landing Spot from April to June 2020. Tomini Bay was confirmed as the fishing ground of all the landed fish. Layang is caught by Mini purse seines with a minimum mesh size of ¾ inch. A total of 896 samples of Layang fish were collected randomly from the fishers' catch during their unloading activity at the landing site. Abdomen dissection was performed on all samples for determining the fish’s sex. The fish samples' total length and body weight were measured using a ruler (nearest = 1 mm) and a scale (nearest = 0.01 gram). The result revealed that the length-weight equation of male Layang was W = 0.000004 L3.1972 (R2 = 97.57%), and that of female was W = 0.0000007 L3.0613 (R2 = 98.99%). This result implied a positive allometric growth pattern, excluding the females in April 2020.

Abstract

Gorontalo Bay, the estuary of the Bone River, is part of the Tomini Bay area. Nike, a school fish larva appearing in Estuary Bone only a few days monthly, suits the prima donna of the community and fishermen in Gorontalo. Any technical matters related to “nike” fishing have never been reported in a structured method. Therefore, scientific investigation is necessary to provide relevant information. This study aimed to identify the fishermen’s profiles and matters linked to “nike” fishing. Structured interviews using a questionnaire instrument were conducted to obtain information from Gorontalo fishermen who actively catch “nike” every month in Gorontalo Bay. The results showed that most “nike” Gorontalo fishermen are elementary and junior high school graduates aged 20-60. Nike fishing is done in groups using wooden boats with totalu'o or tagahu fishing gear. The operational fishing capital they used could be from boat owners, groups, or loans from fish collectors. Most fishermen sell their catch at the Fish Auction, Gorontalo City, with an average price of Rp. 20.000 to Rp. 40.000 per kg. According to fishermen, the “nike” fish population tends to be abundant in the waters during the east monsoon. When the population in the seas is high enough, the fishermen’s catch reaches more than 100 kg per trip. The high intensity of catching and the quantity of fish caught per season of emergence can threaten the sustainability of the “nike” population in nature. A more comprehensive follow-up study is needed to analyze the synergies of economic, social, and ecological aspects to increase “nike” fishermen’s welfare in Gorontalo with the sustainability of the “nike” fish guarantee.

Abstract

Lamu Village is a fishing village located on the beach or around the sea waters of Batudaa Beach Regency. Empowering the fishing community in Lamu Village can be important because fishermen are one of the main economic sectors in the village. Apart from that, Lamu Village is a village that is included in the category of villages experiencing extreme levels of poverty. In fact, Lamu Village has a lot of enormous natural potential, one of which is the potential for aquatic products because Lamu Village is in the coastal area of Tomini Bay. However, this enormous potential has not been utilized and managed optimally by the people of Lamu Village. The aim of this community service is to provide information regarding the handling of yellowfin tuna catches and training on diversifying noodle products from fish bones as a source of calcium. The methods used are counseling and training methods or direct demonstrations to the community, especially fishermen and PKK women. The results obtained from this training are that the community is able to process and utilize water products, especially those that are the potential of Lamu Village. The community has been able to make meatballs from tuna meat and noodles from tuna bone meal, which is able to create products that can give birth to MSMEs in the community.

Abstract

The two main water areas in Gorontalo for the emergence of nike fish are Bone and Paguyaman Estuaries. Each ecosystem is administratively located separated in Gorontalo City and Boalemo Regency, Gorontalo Province. The research aimed to compare the morphometric characters and to determine the distribution of length frequencies, growth patterns, and condition factors of the nike found in those estuaries. A total random sample of 700 to 2275 individuals were caught from the waters using tagahu during fishing seasons, July and September 2021. The samples were preserved using ice cubes and immediately measured for total length, standard length, body height, body width, eye diameter, head diameter, and body weight. The data showed that the morphometric size of the nike in the Paguyaman Estuary was relatively larger compared to those found in the Bone Estuary. The length frequency distribution per day of nike appearance indicates that schooling from each season was composed of a multi-cohort population. Nike's growth pattern during the study was positive allometric and negative allometric. The range of condition factor values for the average nike fish in Muara Bone and Paguyaman were 0.97 – 1.044 and 0.888 – 1.431, respectively.
